The Barrows Brothers

The Barrows Brothers are a collection of powerful wights controlled by Sliske the Mahjarrat. They are named after the tumuli in which they are buried, found in the Barrows in the southern Morytania. They are fought in a boss encounter, each with their own special strengths and weaknesses. Completion of Ritual of the Mahjarrat and Kindred Spirits each add an additional member to the group - Akrisae the Doomed and Linza the Disgraced respectively.
Akrisae and Linza are not encountered in the Barrows: Rise of the Six and do not have corresponding bobblehead Boss pets.
Obtaining all unique drops will unlock the Graverobber [Name] title.

The Barrows Brothers
[edit | edit source]Rise of the Six
[edit | edit source]Barrows: Rise of the Six is a hard mode variant of Barrows, with players fighting the newly empowered original Barrows Brothers. In return for a harder fight (up to four players may battle them), players will find themselves greatly rewarded upon defeating them.
Objective
[edit | edit source]The objective of the Barrows Brothers is to defeat the six Barrows brothers: Ahrim the Blighted, Dharok the Wretched, Guthan the Infested, Karil the Tainted, Torag the Corrupted, Verac the Defiled. Upon completion of Ritual of the Mahjarrat and Kindred Spirits respectively, Akrisae the Doomed and Linza the Disgraced are added into the fray. In this case, Akrisae's sarcophagus will be in the same crypt as Verac, and Linza with Ahrim respectively.
The group are fairly strong for their level, being able to utilise their set effects much like a player would when they use their full set. Linza is a unique exception, being significantly stronger than the rest of the group with higher combat stats and health.
Killing all six of the original brothers is required to increase the beast tab kill count and thus also required to reap a soul when on a Soul Reaper assignment.
Strategy
[edit | edit source]The very basic strategy of the boss encounter is as follows:
- Dig at each 'mound' in turn to enter the crypt, and then check the sarcophagus inside. If a brother spawns, kill them and move onto the next mound.
- If you are presented with a prompt asking if you wish to go into a hole, decline and exit the crypt, noting which mound the hole is located. Proceed through killing all the brothers in the other mounds.
- Once all mounds have been searched and each brother killed, return back to the mound with the hole, and enter it.
- You will be placed inside a maze. Your goal is to get to the centre of the maze to claim your final prize. Only some doors will open, so simply follow the openable doors until you find one leading to the centre. With War's Blessing 1 unlocked, the maze can be skipped by entering the portal appearing at the entrance.
- You may encounter up to two more brothers while navigating the maze, depending on your quest progress. You can kill them to add extra possible loot rolls. You can also kill other mobs to increase the chance of receiving rare, non-barrows items. (See Barrows rewards for more information)
- When you reach the centre chamber, you can attempt to open the final sarcophagus, prompting the last brother to spawn. Kill them, then you may loot it.
- The crypt will begin to collapse around you. At this point, it's advisable to teleport out - though you can run through the maze backwards to escape if you wish.
Rewards
[edit | edit source]
The previous understanding of how the loot mechanics work based on a blog post from Mod Timbo is no longer accurate due to a patch on December 4th 2017. [1] The rewards system is outlined below:

If the brother whose tomb was used to enter the tunnel is not killed yet, he will appear when the chest is opened.
Whether or not you kill Linza has no impact in any way on the drop mechanics besides having her own independent reward slot, as well as calculating reward potential. Reward potential is defined as a specific number that is equal to the sum of the combat level of all your defeated opponents in the completed run (which includes Linza, the brothers in the crypts, the brother in the tunnels, and random creatures in the tunnels), as well as twice the number of brothers killed.
Letting be the number of brothers killed (excluding Linza the Disgraced), the number of regular reward rolls for the chest can be expressed with .[1] If Barrows items are rolled successfully, they are chosen only out of the killed wights' items. It is possible to obtain multiple pieces of Barrows equipment from a single chest.
Players who possess War's Blessing 1 or better will have quick access to the chest in the central chamber.
With the completion of the hard Morytania achievements, the chest will function like a bank coffer similar to the Queen Black Dragon in that the items can be sent straight to the bank, taken or abandoned. Note that the message The chest is now empty. should appear before teleporting or the rewards will be lost.
Drop mechanics
[edit | edit source]If Linza the Disgraced was killed, a one-time roll is performed for her drop table, rolled independently of the other table. There is a chance to obtain one of her items. [2][3] Therefore there is a chance for a specific item. This roll on the loot table is only affected by whether or not Linza is killed during the player's run. If the initial roll fails, nothing else happens and this reward slot is left empty.
N = number of brothers killed excluding Linza
- First, the player rolls a to determine whether you land on the Barrows equipment table (explicitly capping at by killing 7 brothers).
- If the Barrows equipment roll is successful and you land on the table, another roll is performed where each brother you've killed has a number assigned to them.
- Once you land on a specific brother's table, perform another roll for where is the number of different items that brother has e.g. Ahrim has 6 items meaning X = 6, Dharok has 4 items meaning X = 4. For whichever brother is chosen, all drops belonging to that brother are equally likely. For example, if one kills all 7 brothers, it is more likely to obtain an Akrisae's hood than an Ahrim's wand even though one has an equal chance of landing on the Akrisae or Ahrim drop table. This is because there are fewer equipment drops from Akrisae than Ahrim.
- If the Barrows equipment roll is failed, Barrows totems are rewarded with chance.
- If you fail the Barrows totem roll, the corruption sigil is rolled with chance if the player is eligible for one. To be eligible, the player is required to be carrying a dragon defender or one of a higher tier[4] (or have it equipped). It is possible to obtain multiple sigils per chest.
- The amulet of the forsaken is rolled at some point during this process[5]; it is unknown where the roll takes place or what the chance of success is.
- Finally, if all of the above fails, a piece of loot from the standard reward table is rolled utilising your reward potential.
- Repeat steps 1 through 7 a certain amount of times dependent on the number of brothers killed. The number of regular reward rolls in any given run is meaning you get at least 1 roll even without any brothers killed (or if only Linza is killed as she does not increment rolls). Therefore, to achieve the maximum number of rolls, a minimum of 6 brothers must be slain.
- In addition to the above, once per chest (and not once per roll) wearing a Ring of Wealth or higher luck modification has a chance to add one extra reward to the chest from an entirely separate table.[1] This roll is always displayed as the last reward(s) of the chest.
Having tier 2 luck or higher will affect one's chance at obtaining Barrows pieces as well as the amulet of forsaken.[6]
Due to the maths involved, it is always better to kill all 7 brothers (again, excluding Linza) even if they are only interested in certain sets or items in particular. The increased number of reward rolls and the increased chance to hit the rare equipment table far outweigh the chance of getting items from an undesired brother.
Linza the Disgraced's equipment
[edit | edit source]This loot table is rolled once per chest, and only if Linza the Disgraced was killed. The chance of getting a roll on Linza's unique table is . If the roll is successful, there is an equal chance of getting any item, making it for a specific item. It is possible to obtain other Barrows equipment alongside Linza's.

Other Barrows equipment
[edit | edit source]Only the items of the brothers that were killed are available to be rewarded. Whether Linza the Disgraced[1] was killed has no impact when rolling for other Barrows equipment.

Standard items
[edit | edit source]This table is only rolled if the above rolls failed. If the Barrows totem, corruption sigil, and amulet of the forsaken rolls fail, the drop is affected by the reward potential: a random number between 0 and is rolled where is the total level of opponents killed, with a maximum value of 1014.[1] While higher-level enemies require fewer kills, maximising the reward potential by killing only the lowest-level enemies (the level 63 bloodworms and crypt spiders) would take 17 kills.
Completion of the hard Morytania achievements will double the rune drops from the chest.

History
[edit | edit source]The original six brothers, Ahrim, Dharok, Guthan, Karil, Torag and Verac, lived in a farm during the Third Age. They were devout Saradominists, though Verac was actually a Zamorakian worshipper and kept it a secret from his brothers.
During conscription, only Torag wanted to join the army, as the others had no interest in doing so; Dharok stated that serving the soldiers was enough "glory" for him, while the others did not appear show as much interest. That was until Ahrim killed a Guthixian druidess named Isolde, who had been romantically involved with his younger brother Guthan. Guthan, despaired at the loss of his love, went to a bar and drank himself drunk, resulting in an incident that saw him killing Commander Jaycliff, a Saradominist commander. Knowing the investigation would result in his execution, Guthan went to the Mahjarrat Sliske for protection, who agreed under the condition that all brothers joined. Guthan convinced the other four brothers to join him and Torag, and they embarked on numerous campaigns in both southern Forinthry and eventually Morytania. They were bestowed powerful gear by Sliske, making them feared by their enemies.
When they had nearly finished their campaign and were at the borders of the Sanguinesti region, Sliske took the power he had gifted back from them, which caused all six to simultaneously sicken and die at the same time. The men they commanded lost all hope of finishing the campaign and built mounds to honour their sacrifice, before making the retreat up back north. Sliske then returned to the newly constructed barrows and cast dark magic on the mounds, reviving the brothers as vengeful spirits.[8]
Sliske had been tasked by Azzanadra to keep an artefact safe from Zamorak's followers, and it was kept in the barrows. The brothers were instructed to guard the artefact, and they did so dutifully for thousands of years. The dying prayers of adventurers exploring the barrows and the catacombs underneath it greatly powered the artefact by the time it was taken by an adventurer in year 169 of the Fifth Age, who had been tasked by Azzanadra to reclaim it after they defeated them.
Ritual of the Mahjarrat
[edit | edit source]
The brothers are summoned by their master Sliske during the 18th Ritual of Rejuvenation. Arriving at the Ritual Plateau, they initially fought off the Armoured Zombies under the control of Zemouregal. After they defeated the zombies along with the same adventurer who stole the artefact from them, Sharathteerk under Zemouregal's orders summoned the hero of Varrock, Arrav. In this battle of the undead, Arrav had the upper hand - such was his might that the Barrow wights were unable to harm him. Arrav ceased fighting the brothers after the adventurer distracted and led him to the area where his heart was buried, causing him to break free of Zemouregal's control.
After the ritual, Sliske, having been impressed by the adventurer's prowess, attempted to convert them into a Barrow wight. His conversion spell was however intercepted by Akrisae; thereafter known as Akrisae the Doomed - the newest of Sliske's Barrow wights. Sliske was surprised, but content nonetheless with his new prize.
Sliske's Grand Ascendancy
[edit | edit source]During the 'Grand Ascendancy' - a gathering of gods arranged by Sliske - the Barrows Brothers and Akrisae were summoned to the Empyrean Citadel to bar access to the meeting chamber from non-divine beings such as Zemouregal, who attempted to force his way through but is denied by the power of Sliske. Shortly after the meeting, Sliske experimented with the original Barrows Brothers in the Shadow Realm, granting them extra powers and some control over it, though this appeared to have been temporary.
Kindred Spirits
[edit | edit source]The brothers were part of Sliske's game to enact entertainment as the gods had not gone to war as he had expected. He kidnapped Brother Samwell, Meg, Linza, and Major Mary Rancour. The World Guardian had no interest in playing his game until Sliske killed Brother Samwell, threatening the same fate onto the others if they did not comply.
In the first chamber, Sliske brought the World Guardian to Dharok, who was fighting off endless waves of Saradominist crusaders. Dharok tried his best to avoid killing them, but found himself unable to as they would die to even the simplest of parries. The World Guardian convinced him to lay down his arms and let them kill him, as he was already undead and they restored his body after the crusaders left. Understanding their rage, Dharok thanked them for giving him closure for his actions.
In the second chamber, Sliske put Ahrim in a maze, with the World Guardian directing his navigation. The maze was dotted with numerous diverging paths; one would blast him with fire, while the other would blast one of the three hostages instead. As Ahrim navigated the maze, Sliske began revealing Ahrim's secret to the others. The World Guardian convinced Ahrim to take the blasts, and at the centre of the maze, Sliske dropped Isolde and Guthan in. Ahrim revealed he had killed Isolde, much to his fury. Sliske then ordered Ahrim to kill Isolde, promising to wipe Guthan's memories of her. Ahrim, having undergone the flames in place of the hostages, realised his self-righteous arrogance had torn apart innocent lives, apologising to Isolde and Guthan for his actions.
In the third chamber, the group, along with Ahrim and Dharok, found Verac being "torn" apart by a statue of Saradomin and Zamorak. Sliske explained that in order to free him, they would need to reveal which one had the least grip on him. Verac, proclaiming to be a devout follower of Saradomin, demanded they make a Zamorak key, but the World Guardian realised he was lying and tore the Sardomin key that had been embedded in his chest, using it to destroy the Saradomin statue and revealing his heretical status to his brothers.
In the fourth chamber, Guthan was seen having to balance himself lest he crush Torag and Karil or Commander Jaycliff. While Ahrim was figuring out how to save his brothers, Linza asked Guthan to reveal what was going on, explaining to him that the others had been suffering until they revealed their secrets. Guthan relented and revealed he had gotten his family into the mess in order to save his own life.
Sliske soon noted the World Guardian was missing after Meg failed to impersonate them, just as they arrived on the scene. Realising that they had snooped behind the scenes, he revealed that Linza had betrayed the hostages, having stolen dragon equipment secrets from the Dragonkin and that she came to him for protection. Sliske intended to uphold their deal when she died, but because of the World Guardian's actions, double-crossed Linza and turned her into a wight on the spot, making her Linza the Disgraced. He then ordered the Barrows Brothers to attack, but they refused and he instead resorted to collapsing the cavern.
As Sliske had intended the games to reveal the hidden and tragic past of the Barrows Brothers, what Torag and Karil had kept secret remains unknown, since Sliske cancelled the game when he realised what the World Guardian had been up to.
The World Guardian, Rancour, and Meg managed to escape. Dharok called the World Guardian over, expressing gratitude as whatever they did allowed them to have some slight control over themselves, feigning loyalty to Sliske and promising to help them when the time was right.
Sliske's Endgame
[edit | edit source]The brothers return, having been summoned by Sliske to kill the World Guardian after they fought off Sliske's first wave of wights. The brothers refuse to help Sliske, vowing to kill him for all the agony he caused. It is revealed that Sliske had tight control of the brothers with a powerful shadow artefact that the World Guardian destroyed during his game, and its destruction was what gave the brothers more freedom. As a result, Sliske sends his standard wights at the brothers in the Shadow Realm while he sends Nomad, Linza, and Gregorovic at the World Guardian.
The brothers work together to defeat the wights while the World Guardian successfully kills Sliske. After the battle, they return to their mounds, happy to be free of Sliske's control. They eagerly await the World Guardian's return so they can hone their skills, as the magic of the Barrows ensures that they won't die as easily. Linza also decides to stay with the brothers, since she felt she would no longer be welcome in human society as an undead wight and that the brothers would benefit from her smithing proficiency. Though Akrisae is not interacted with at all, it is implied that he also decided to remain with the brothers.

Trivia
[edit | edit source]
- During the graphical update in January 2012, it was possible to get a draconic visage from the barrows chest, which only lasted a week.
- Barrows is another word for a tumulus, which is a mound of earth and stones raised over a grave, called a crypt in the minigame, or graves, which is probably where the name of the minigame comes from. Tumulus is Latin for "mound" or "small hill".
- From 00:00 UTC 12 November 2011 to 23:59 UTC 14 November 2011, there was an event where players could gain double loot from several dungeons, including the Barrows minigame. This was part of Jagex's bot-busting celebration.
- It is possible for a brother to spawn again when you kill the first one, then rush quickly to a door nearby. Killing the brother that popped up again however, will cause it to count as a creature instead.
- If you attempt to enter with a familiar, you will be forced out with a message saying "You cannot enter this area with a familiar. You must leave this area and dismiss your familiar if you wish to enter."
- If you use Surge or Escape to get into the mounds with a familiar, a message will say "You cannot enter this area with a familiar. You must leave this area and dismiss your familiar if you wish to enter. Your familiar is forced to leave as it cannot remain here." The familiar will be automatically dismissed, dropping everything it is carrying.
- Follower pets (e.g. boss pets) cannot be summoned inside the Barrows area. However, they can be brought inside if summoned outside first.
- As of 1 February 2018, the highest kill count for this boss was 12,595 kills.[9]
- This had increased to 13,985 kills by 13 December 2018.[10]
- It is possible to receive two of the same pieces of armour from one chest. It is currently unknown if this is a glitch.
- The Barrows Brothers originally had a purple colour scheme. They were turned green in a graphical update in 2012, and The Barrows: Rise of the Six released in 2013 was given the purple colour scheme.
- Attempts to cast alchemy spells whilst in the barrow will be prevented with the message: The flames of your magic are snuffed out by the darkness of the barrow!
