# Chaos Elemental

For the achievement, see Chaos Elemental (achievement).
This article has a strategy guide. All information on mechanics, setups, and tactics is on the subpage.

The Chaos Elemental is a boss found west of Rogues' Castle deep in the Wilderness, and one of three bosses available to free-to-play players. It is one of the strongest monsters in the Wilderness, overtaking the King Black Dragon, which held the title for four years. The Chaos Elemental held the title for two years and seven months before the introduction of the Corporeal Beast. With an update in 2017, it is now available to free players and is the strongest free-to-play monster.

It is known mostly for its dragon 2h sword drop. The Chaos Elemental was given the ability to drop revenant items when the Wilderness was re-introduced, but it drops it at a far worse rate than any of the revenants despite being far stronger. In addition, it drops large quantities of chaos runes, blood runes and death runes, more than most other monsters. It also drops large amounts of food.

Obtaining all unique drops will unlock the cHaOs [Name] title.

The Chaos Elemental was a staple of the Postbag from the Hedge, where its letters hinted at forthcoming updates in a rather cryptic manner. After the discontinuation of the postbags, update hints attributed to the Chaos Elemental continued to be released for a while afterwords in the form of a note.

During the non-canonical Gower Quest, the Chaos Elemental appears in Behind the Scenes as "Steve the Chaos Elemental". He will refer players to the Grand Exchange room to find the second Life Altar fragment, and explains how the pipes puzzle works. He dislikes when players expect him to have a jumbled name as opposed to a traditional name, and will call them 'elementalist'.

## Getting there

This area is moderately easy to access from the destinations of the Ardougne teleport lever or Edgeville teleport lever, which both teleport the player to the nearby Deserted Keep. There is also Wilderness obelisk near the Castle for fast access, though obelisks send players to random locations until the Hard Wilderness achievements are completed. Annakarl Teleport also brings players to the Demonic Ruins to the south.

William is a fair distance to the south-west and works as a banker, but only to members and he has a large wander radius. Edward can be found outside the Dragonkin Laboratory and also works as a banker to free players; he resides in a safe area outside of the Wilderness that cannot be entered if you are in combat.

## Attacks

Fighting the Chaos Elemental with Ranged
Deals Melee, Ranged or Magic damage Unequips up to four equipped items Teleports the target to a random area nearby

The Chaos Elemental possesses three distinct attacks, which can be distinguished by their appearance and sound effect. Its primary attack is called Discord, and is a green projectile attack. This attack can deal either magic, ranged, or melee damage - it is impossible to distinguish what damage is dealt until the attack hits. The projectiles hit up to 1104, but it is still suggested that players utilise Protect from Magic as that is his most accurate attack or Soul Split as protection prayers are only useful for one out of three attacks.

It also has two special attacks: Confusion, in which the Chaos Elemental uses a fiery red projectile to teleport the player to a random area nearby (unless they are 20 game squares away), and Madness, a multicolored red, green and blue projectile that removes the player's mainhand weapon and up to three other equipped items. If the player's inventory is full, items will stay equipped.

## Drops

The Chaos Elemental dying

### Main drops

The Chaos Elemental usually drops two items, but occasionally will drop only one. Notable drops include the dragon 2h sword, brawling gloves, ancient artefacts, and items from the Ancient Warriors' drop table.

The Ancient Warriors' drop table is a sub-table that can constitute one of the main drops, and includes Ancient Warriors' equipment, corrupt Ancient Warriors' equipment, corrupt dragon equipment, and several junk items. The chance of rolling onto the Ancient Warriors' drop table is 1/128. The chance of any specific piece of equipment after rolling onto the table is 1/224, with a total chance once on the table of getting a piece of equipment being 44/224.[1] Brawling gloves and ancient artefacts are not on the Ancient Warriors' drop table, even though they are revenant drops, and are rolled elsewhere.

2. ^ Base drop rate of 1/2,500, with a threshold of 500. Maximum rate is 1/250, reached at 5000 kills.

### Rare drop table

Luck-enhancing items are not required to access the table, but they will increase the chance of accessing the rare drop table and may also improve the loot received from it.

## Trivia

The Chaos Elemental's Steam trading card wallpaper.
Wilderness warning sign
• On 1 February 2011, the Chaos Elemental received a graphical update and improved drop table. Prior to The Wilderness and Free Trade Return!, it was a dark cloud with six tentacles and a lavender tint.
• The examine information of the Chaos Elemental, pUre A cHaOs of crEatuRe!, reflects its chaotic nature. A grammatically correct examine would be "A creature of pure chaos." The chaotic nature of the examine text is also symbolised by the alternating between upper and lower case.
• In Postbag from the Hedge #39, Reldo states that the Chaos Elemental may be related to the Balance Elemental by some means.[3]
• In Postbag from the Hedge #41, Postie Pete went through the Chaos Elemental's suitcase and found it to be full of paper. He had previously asked the elemental's actual name, and although the Chaos Elemental teleported, the words on the scraps of paper either underlined or circle with red spell the phrase 'Is Eondethwleaos' when reversed.
• After killing the Chaos Elemental, the adventurer's log will say "I killed the cHaOs EleMeNTal.", similarly to the examine text, as it alternates between upper and lower case.
• Killing more than one Chaos elemental will result in the Adventurer's Log saying "I killed # cHaOs EleMeNTalS."
• Currently, this monster holds the record for having the largest distinct drop table, with 128 different items, not counting different quantities or the rare drop table.
• The Chaos Elemental is known to have no exact age, the formula for it changing every day.[4] The following formulas are known to have been the ages of the Chaos Elemental in the past:
• On 9 Bennanth 169 in the 5th age, the Elemental's age was: ${\displaystyle Age_{CE}=(N_{Yewtrees}-N_{Coalrocks})\times N_{Werewolves}\pm 2000)}$[5]
• Where ${\displaystyle N_{Object}}$ is the number of such object that exist.
• On 30 Fentuary 169 in the 5th age, the Elemental's age was: ${\displaystyle Age_{CE}=P_{\pi \left({\frac {N_{Pieseaten}+{\sqrt {Area_{Wilderness}}}}{Depth_{Ardougneport}}}\right)\pm 1/0}}$[4]
• Where the number of pies eaten is the count from the day before this letter was received
• The area of the Wilderness is in acres
• The depth of Ardougne's port is taken in fathoms
• Here, ${\displaystyle P_{n}}$ indicates the nth prime number, and ${\displaystyle \pi (n)}$ is the function that counts the number of prime numbers less than or equal to n.
• The plus or minus is to be taken to whichever index of ${\displaystyle P_{n}}$ produces the closest prime number to the argument used in the prime counting function
• Another way to put this is to find ${\displaystyle {\frac {N_{Pieseaten}+{\sqrt {Area_{Wilderness}}}}{Depth_{Ardougne}}}}$, and then use the nearest prime number as the age of the elemental
• It is not mentioned how to calculate the age of the elemental if this formula falls evenly between two different prime numbers
• While not mentioned how it was calculated, the Elemental is known to be 12,000 years old when its Top Trumps card was written.
• The Wilderness Warning Sign (pictured right) that can be found on the perimeter of the wilderness, contains an image of the Chaos Elemental and when examined shows the text "Danger, Wilderness up ahead. Watch out for the Beast!".
• There is a gravestone in the New Varrock graveyard named "Chaos Elemental's gravestone" which reads "Hark! Aagi Zoids. Incognito, most likely."
• The Chaos Elemental can be seen wearing a festive Santa hat during the Christmas period.
• An unknown update increased the spawn speed of the Chaos Elemental due to player complaints on its very slow respawn speed prior to EoC.
• The spawn speed was further increased with the Patch Notes of 5 May 2015 since it was the only boss that could not be instanced.
• As of 1 February 2018, the highest kill count for this boss was 31,653 kills.[6]
• Chaos Elemental trophies can be found among Chthonian trophies in the Infernal Source, hinting that the Chaos Elemental is a Chthonian demon, and that there exist more than one of its kind.
