Tormented demons are massive demons summoned and controlled by the Mahjarrat Lucien. They first appear in the Grandmaster quest While Guthix Sleeps, wherein Lucien uses Daemonicas Abhoris to summon two demons in the Ancient Guthix Temple and place them into a state of perpetual physical agony, healing their bodies as they burn and making them extremely hostile and aggressive. After the quest is complete, a total of six tormented demons may be found in the Temple. The ability to have them assigned as slayer tasks by Kuradal, Morvran, and Laniakea can be purchased using 50 slayer points after completion of While Guthix Sleeps.

Tormented demons possess a number of formidable powers. They can attack with melee, ranged, and magic, shield themselves from damage, and even use protection prayers. They are often killed (either by single players, or teams of players) for their unique drops, namely dragon limbs, used to forge the dragon crossbow (which is in turn used to forge the Ascension crossbow), as well as the pieces of the dragon platebody. They also drop the dragon claw and off-hand dragon claw, both as part of the same drop, which are used to craft chaotic claws. Aside from these, they have a number of other valuable drops, such as charms, herbs, salvage and clue scrolls. The demons commonly drop rune salvage so is it a good idea to bring a charged spring cleaner set to high alch or disassembly mode to process the salvage, negating the need to fill the player's inventory. A Most Wanted card may be used to increase the chances of receiving unique drops from tormented demons.

Despite being demons, these monsters do not take increased damage from holy water, although it does remove their fire shield. Additionally, dwarf multicannons cannot be set up in the demons' lair. They can be easily killed with two combat styles, or one if a player uses a combat familiar. Necromancy is very effective without the need for a second combat style, as the demons cannot protect from necromancy.

Locations

[edit | edit source]

Getting there

[edit | edit source]

While carrying a lit sapphire lantern, use a games necklace to teleport to the Tears of Guthix cavern (option 7). Then, use the "travel into cavern" option on a nearby light creature, which brings you to the Guthixian temple. Head south and climb up the eastern wall twice, then climb through the skull to enter to the Guthixian temple. In the next intersection, continue heading straight down, towards the temple.

Alternatively, a Sixth-Age circuit can be used to teleport directly into the temple, which saves an inventory space as you do not need a lantern to lure a light creature.

You can also use the quest cape or master quest cape (option 1) to teleport directly to the Guthixian temple.

If you have access to the Max Guild, you can attune the boss portal to Tormented Demons.

Mechanics

[edit | edit source]
The tormented demon's roar
Damage being absorbed by the fire shield

Tormented demons attack with melee, magic, and ranged, though they only use one style at a time. They can hit up to 1150 damage with any of these attack styles, and with very high accuracy; their attacks often hit players regardless of Defence level or armour quality. Fortunately, protection prayers reduce this damage to 1, so prayer switching is an effective and essential tactic when fighting them. Tormented demons change attack styles every 16 seconds or so; when they do, they rear back and roar, creating an area-of-effect Magic attack that can hit players behind cover. Like Crystal shapeshifters, the tormented demon's affinity values change accordingly depending on the combat style used; magic demons are weak to bolts, ranged to stab attacks and melee to fire spells.

Defensively, tormented demons use protection prayers based on the combat style that is dealing the most damage to them, however they cannot use Protect from Necromancy. Once a tormented demon takes 3100 damage from a given attack style, it changes its protection prayer to defend against that style. For this purpose, any hit below 200 damage counts as 200 damage, unless the attack misses. When attacked by familiars, tormented demons treat the damage as if it was 10 times higher, so a hit of 450 damage would be treated as 4500. Tormented demons' protection prayers do not run out, and for this reason at least two combat styles are necessary when fighting the demons.

In addition to their protection prayers, each tormented demon is initially surrounded by a fire shield reducing all incoming damage by 75%. This shield can be taken down for 60 seconds by a successful hit with Darklight or Holy water. Each non-zero hit from either weapon resets the 60-second counter, and both auto-attacks and abilities work (note that for the purposes of their prayer-switching, hits through the fire shield are counted without the damage reduction). The shield cannot be taken down with Darklight while the demon is using Protect from Melee, or with holy water and Protect from Ranged. If the player has upgraded Darklight after completing Dimension of Disaster, it will act as a powerful weapon, and the demons will take more damage before using Protect from Melee.

Finally, the six tormented demons in the Ancient Guthix Temple are reasonably close to each other. There are two groups of three demons; one on the north, and the other in the south. While they usually don't wander across to the other side, tormented demons will always focus on whoever they attacked, only changing aggression when their original target leaves the server or is attacked by another player. It is recommended to avoid fighting multiple demons at once, and if the player is attacked by multiple demons, attempt to tank one or two of them while trapping the remaining behind the walls and pillars that dot the edges. Demons in the temple always start with magic attacks and have the Protect from Melee prayer active.

They may be placed in the Sunken Pyramid through an Ushabti. This also requires obtaining a soul from the Ancient Guthix Temple beforehand. The primary advantage of this is that players may choose other weak monsters such as chickens for prayer restoration, resulting in extremely fast and cheap prayer renewal, and a very safe environment with extremely fast access. A drawback, however, is that two can be placed at most in each room (due to the unique respawn timer of the pyramid), as three or more demons in the same room can be extremely dangerous.

Strategy

[edit | edit source]

Drops

[edit | edit source]
The following drop rates are provided by Jagex, unless otherwise specified.

The average Tormented demon kill is worth 34,106 coins.

The main drop table is rolled out of 256. This is reduced to 253 if tier 3 or higher luck is active, which slightly reduces the chance of a fire talisman drop, and increases the chances of other main drops. Dragon platebody parts are rolled separately.

Pre-roll

[edit | edit source]

There is a 1/352 chance to access the dragon platebody part table (1/348 with tier 3 or higher luck active). If successful, one of the three parts is chosen (1/3 chance each).

If a Most Wanted card (tormented demons) is carried, and if none of the uniques are selected (dragon platebody parts, dragon claws, dragon limbs), a second more generous roll is performed for each. For dragon platebody parts this is 1/334 (1/331 with tier 3 luck). Combining these chances gives an overall 1/515.9 chance to get each dragon platebody part per kill (1/509.9 with tier 3 luck). If the second roll results in a drop, additional charges are consumed from the card: 19 for dragon platebody parts.

Receiving a dragon platebody part prevents all other drops except charms.

  1. ^ a b c 1/352 chance for any ruined dragon armour piece. 1/1,044 (1/348 for any) with tier 3 luck or higher. Increased to 1/515.9 for a specific part while carrying a Most Wanted card (tormented demons), and 1/509.9 with a card and tier 3 luck active.

Dragon claws and limbs

[edit | edit source]

Dragon claws (both are dropped as one drop) and dragon limbs each have a 1/256 chance to be dropped, as part of the main drop table (1/253 with tier 3 luck).

If a Most Wanted card (tormented demons) is carried, and if none of the uniques are selected (dragon platebody parts, dragon claws, dragon limbs), a second more generous roll is performed for each. For dragon claws and limbs, this is 1/243 (1/240 with tier 3 luck), after the second roll for dragon platebody parts; if successful, one of the two items is selected (1/2 for claws, 1/2 limbs). Combining these chances gives an overall 1/168.6 chance to dragon claws or limbs per kill (1/166.6 with tier 3 luck). If the second roll results in a drop, additional charges are consumed from the card: 19 for dragon claws and 99 for dragon limbs.

  1. ^ a b The main hand and off-hand dragon claw are dropped together.
  2. ^ a b c 1/253 with tier 3 or higher luck active. Increased to 1/168.6 while carrying a Most Wanted card (tormented demons), and 1/166.6 with a card and tier 3 luck.

Rare drop table

[edit | edit source]
There is a 1/100 chance of rolling the rare drop table.
Luck-enhancing items are not required to access the table, but they will increase the chance of accessing the rare drop table and may also improve the loot received from it.
Rare drop table
  1. ^ Molten glass removed from the drop table with tier 2 luck.
  2. ^ Runite stone spirit removed from the drop table with tier 3 luck.
  3. ^ Raw lobster removed from the drop table with tier 4 luck.
  4. ^ Vecna skull requires tier 4 luck. Without it, coins are dropped instead.
  5. ^ Cheese+tom batta dropped only without tier 4 luck. Indicates a roll for Hazelmere's signet ring and Blurberry Special.
  6. ^ Blurberry Special requires tier 4 luck. Indicates a failed 1/10 roll for Hazelmere's signet ring.
  7. ^ Hazelmere's signet ring requires tier 4 luck.

Tertiary

[edit | edit source]
  1. ^ This drop only attempts to roll should you fail to roll a hard clue. Should you get this item, there's a 1% chance it'll be upgraded to a sealed clue scroll (master).
  2. ^ Only dropped if fewer than five ancient effigies are owned. The drop rate is decreased for every effigy owned, up to four effigies.

Charms

[edit | edit source]

The quantity of charms dropped can be affected by a number of boosts including Familiarisation triple charm drops, Fang of Mohegan, and seasonal events such as Winter Weekends.

    Trivia

    [edit | edit source]
    • Upon slaying a number of tormented demons, a player's RuneMetrics Event Log reads "I killed X tormented demons, fewer tormented souls in the world must be a good thing." Upon slaying 100 or more tormented demons, a player's Event Log reads "I killed many Tormented Demons."
    • If standing outside the barrier after tagging aggression from a Tormented Demon in a Personal Slayer Dungeon, the demon can still launch an attack at you immediately after switching attack styles, however, it will always miss.
    • One of the two tormented demons fought during While Guthix Sleeps doesn't have a dragon metal helmet and its burned face and grin can be seen. The concept art of Tormented Demon also lacks the helmet.
      • This variant of the demon is never encountered following completion of the quest in the Ancient Guthixian Temple, instead appearing as a random spawn if placed in the Sunken Pyramid.
    • Dragon platebody parts can be found on the Tormented demon. The ruined armour lump is the head, the ruined armour slice is the left arm and the ruined armour shard is the right leg.
    • Tormented demons previously always had one stat out of attack, strength, magic, and ranged increased while the others were decreased outside of their base values.
    • Tormented demons, like several other monsters, are always aggressive to players. However, whereas most monsters would simply return idling around if the player leaves, tormented demons will still attempt to track the player unless they enter an instance, die or log out.
    • As of 1 February 2018, the highest kill count for these monsters was 142,993 kills.[2]
      • This had increased to 144,081 by 6 May 2018.[3]
