Avantoe seeds can be planted in a herb patch in order to produce grimy avantoe. This requires the player to have level 50 in Farming.
Avantoe seeds can be obtained as a monster drop, by pickpocketing Master Farmers, from Managing Miscellania if your workers are assigned to Farming, or bought from the Vinesweeper minigame for 1250 points each.
The planting of avantoe seeds can be profitable, and therefore players are advised to make sure that the herb does not die. The use of supercompost, ultracompost, or the Fertile Soil spell is strongly recommended, as these will help preventing growing herbs from becoming diseased. It is not possible to water the patch nor to ask a nearby farmer to tend the herbs.
Having the Pharm Ecology relic power active will completely prevent disease in herb patches (requires 81 Archaeology).
Avantoe seeds may be requested as part of a Menaphos City Quest.
The following table shows the profit yield, assuming all the herbs and seeds are purchased/sold at the Grand Exchange, for the guide price. If the herb dies, the loss will be −1,085 coins.
Supercompost yields a minimum of 5 herbs.
