A pontifex signet ring is a Zarosian artefact that can be restored with level 58 Archaeology at an archaeologist's workbench.
Once the item is restored, it can be worn, carried in the player's inventory or added to the tool belt to allow the player to pass through the barrier of the Kharid-et Dig Site chapel giving access to the altar and the two shadow anchors.
Completion of Azzanadra's Quest allows the player to upgrade the ring to a Pontifex observation ring which provides minor skilling bonuses.
With a pontifex signet ring, and a legatus pendant, the player is able to walk through the maximum security barrier in the Vault, just north of the entrance from the prison block. Behind the maximum security barrier, players can talk to the strange device.
