A player digging with a spade.
A spade is a multi-functional tool in RuneScape. It has many uses, such as harvesting crops in the Farming skill, digging up caskets during Treasure Trails, digging mole hills at Falador, digging up the rusty chest, and performing various tasks during quests. When it was originally released, it was only used in Pirate's Treasure quest.
A spade can be stored on the tool belt, but it can't be used for activities that need the "dig" option like certain quests. However, Treasure Trail scrolls that require the player to dig can be right-clicked to dig with them. Since the Barrows revamp in January 2012, a spade is no longer needed to enter the tombs. Spades can also be stored with tool leprechauns.
They are sold in Farming shops, and an infinite supply can be gained in your house by making a Tool store 5 at 55 Construction. Alternatively, they can be derived from a Rogue kit.
In the Vinesweeper minigame, a spade can be bought for 5 coins from Mrs. Winkin. This must be done through a dialogue option instead of the trade interface.
Also, spades spawn in Falador (in the estate agent's building just east of the furnace), in the top floor of the Varrock General Store, in the mining spot near Rimmington, Lumbridge Swamp (in the shack, with a rake), inside Draynor Manor, in Edmond's garden (in East Ardougne), the mining spot south of Falador, and in the Blast Furnace room on the east side of the coke collection bin in Keldagrim.
