It can be retrieved from Explorer Jack, Bob, or Ned for free if lost. If a higher tier explorer's ring has been obtained, explorer's ring 1 cannot be retrieved for free. If the player already has any of the explorer's rings, they also sell an extra explorer's ring 1 for 500 coins.
The ring can be used in the Fist of Guthix minigame to recharge the wearer's run energy. This is helpful to be able to run away from hunters for longer or to get to the hunted more easily.

If a player attempts to restore their run energy when it is already at 100%, it will give a message saying "You are fully rested. You do not need to use the ring's power for the moment." But run energy will be wasted if the player tries to restore run energy at 51-99% run energy level.
There was a glitch when the ring recharges every day at 00:00 UTC. If a player is logged in at that time, the ring will not be recharged until the next log in, which is now patched.

The Explorer's rings were the only rings to provide a prayer bonus until the addition of the ring of death.
The Explorer's ring 1, 2 and 3 resemble each other and appear to be made of bronze, silver and gold respectively; however, the explorer ring 4 looks more different. Many people assume that the Explorers ring 4 is made of platinum.
