Skeletal Wyverns (Draconis ossis) are undead Slayer monsters that require level 72 Slayer to kill. They are the only monster to drop granite legs, and also have a chance of dropping the draconic visage. They can be found in the Asgarnian Ice Dungeon, in the chamber accessed from the southern wall of the icy area. Their living counterparts reside deeper in the same cave and in the Wilderness.

Their bones are highly valued for the production of super prayer potions, and subsequently, extreme prayer potions. They are also a good source of crimson charms, although there are many easier alternatives if one is not on a Slayer assignment.

Skeletal wyverns may be specifically assigned as a slayer task, but can optionally be killed for tasks of Skeletons and Undead. As the name implies, they cannot be killed for living wyvern tasks or vice versa.

Killing a Skeletal Wyvern is required for one of the Hard Falador achievements titled Why Oh Wyvern. Their tail bone is also required for the Odd Old Man's wish list after Fur 'n Seek.

Locations

[edit | edit source]

Strategy

[edit | edit source]

Skeletal Wyverns are fairly strong creatures compared to most other slayer monsters their level. They attack with melee, ranged and a particularly dangerous icy breath attack which deals high typeless damage and freezes players without proper protection.

An elemental, mind, body, cosmic or chaos shield will absorb most of the damage of the icy breath, and most forms of dragonfire protection will work as well, including the anti-dragon shield and Deflect Magic curse. However, antifire, super antifire, and brightfire potions do not provide any protection against the icy breath attack; only wyrmfire potions and overload salves (or the supreme/elder versions) grant full protection.

When attacking from a distance, Skeletal Wyverns will use both their ranged attack and their icy breath attack. If in melee distance, they will use as melee attack as well. For this reason, it is better for players with lower combat levels to use Protect from Missiles/Deflect Missiles and attack from a distance to minimise the damage taken.

Although they share many traits with dragons, Skeletal Wyverns are not dragons, and therefore are not susceptible to dragon slayer bonuses. However, they are susceptible to undead slayer bonuses, specifically the salve amulet (or its enchanted version), the Undead Slayer perk and the Undead Slayer ability.

  • patch 28 November 2022 (Update):
    • Two of the four Skeletal Wyvern variants (versions 3 and 4) were affected by dragon modifiers. These have been removed – Skeletal Wyvern aren't dragons!
  • patch 9 September 2008 (Update):
    • One of the Skeletal Wyverns was appearing as level 158 rather than level 140, even though it was really no tougher than the other level 140 Wyverns. It's had its level adjusted to match the rest; this will not affect its difficulty in combat.
