Run energy (sometimes called Stamina or Run) is a player's ability to run rather than walk around the landscape, and is measured as a percentage. Players all run at the same rate, unless their energy is at 0%, in which case they cannot run at all. Running is exactly twice as fast as walking. A player running covers 20 squares in 6 seconds, while a player walking covers 10 squares in the same time. Energy gradually depletes whilst the player is running, and recovers whilst they are not.

The energy level is displayed in the game's options screen and is displayed (along with the World Mapcompass and the Home Teleport) on the top-right hand corner of the minimap. These values show how much longer a player can run. Players can switch this option on to run everywhere they go, or they can run to one particular destination by holding down Ctrl when they click to move (see Game controls). Free players and players with an Agility level of 1 have a recovery rate of 0.8 energy per second.

Players with level 81 Archaeology can activate the Endurance relic power at the Mysterious monolith which allows infinite run energy while activated.

Using energy[edit | edit source]

A player running, depleting energy.

Energy starts at 100% by default, but decreases as the player runs around. A player with 1 Agility will be able to run for about 1:26 before running out of energy, and at level 99 Agility will be able to run for about 2:00 before running out of energy. Every level of Agility effectively increases the duration a player can run by 1 game tick.

The rate at which energy goes down also increases with the weight of the items they are carrying (i.e. items in the inventory and any items they are wearing or have equipped). This rate is approximated by the following equation: where E = Run Efficiency and W = Weight effectively carried in Kgs. Players can reduce their effective carry weight by equipping weight-reducing equipment such as the boots of lightness.

Getting hit by the special attack of Morrigan's throwing axe multiplies the drain by 10x for a minute.

When the energy reaches 0%, running will be disabled automatically and the player can only walk. Running can be manually re-enabled when the player has more than 0% energy, and it will automatically re-enable when the player has at least 40% run energy.

Recovering energy[edit | edit source]

A player walking, recovering energy.

Energy gradually recovers (increasing up to a maximum of 100%) any time that the player is not running, i.e. walking or standing still, except at certain times when the player is doing something else, such as crossing an agility obstacle. The rate at which it recovers increases with the player's Agility level, but does not recover at all when the player is logged out of the game. Recovery rates for energy are listed below.

At level 1 Agility:

  • Walking - 1:15 to regenerate from 0-100.
  • Resting - 25 seconds to restore from 0-100.
  • Listening To a Musician - 25 seconds to restore from 0-100

At Level 99 Agility:

  • Walking - 55 seconds to regenerate from 0-100.
  • Resting - 15 seconds to restore from 0-100.
  • Listening To a Musician - 15 seconds to restore from 0-100

Resting Status Globe.gif The running globe's resting animation; the music note appears while resting near a musician.

Each Agility level above 1 that a player has seems to reduce the time required to regenerate energy back to 100% by about 0.3 seconds or half of a game tick. Weight does not have any impact on energy recovery.

Energy-restoring items[edit | edit source]

Energy can be recovered more quickly by using a number of items:

Name Percentage-points of energy recovered
Guthix rest 5%
Papaya 10%
White tree fruit 16%
Energy potion 20% (per dose). Other players can administer this using the Potion Share Lunar Spell.
Purple sweets 20% (per piece)
Summer pie 20% (per bite)
Super energy potion 40% (per dose). Other players can administer this using the Potion Share Lunar Spell.
Strange fruit 60%
Mint cake 100%
Gout tuber 100%
Winter sq'irkjuice 10%
Spring sq'irkjuice 20%
Autumn sq'irkjuice 30%
Summer sq'irkjuice 40%
Ogre flask (salt water) 100% - continually restores run energy every few seconds for 10–23 minutes depending on Agility level. 6 doses.
Explorer's ring 50% - can be used 1, 2, or 3 times per day with explorer's ring 1, 2 and 3/4, respectively. (Resets at 00:00 UTC)
Globetrotter boots 100% - continually restores run energy every few seconds for 18 minutes. Gains a charge for every 2 clue scrolls completed. Max 3 charges.
Spirit Terrorbird scroll (Tireless Run) 50% of the player's Agility level, rounded up (when a Spirit terrorbird is summoned - using a scroll costs 8 Summoning spell points)
Bull Ant scroll (Unburden) 50% of the player's Agility level, rounded up (when a bull ant is summoned - using the scroll will cost 12 Summoning spell points)
Bandages (only usable in Castle Wars) 30%
Bandages (only usable in Soul Wars) 50%

Musicians[edit | edit source]

Listening to musicians help restore run energy faster. These NPCs were introduced with the run energy update. Listening to them will recover 100% of your energy in just 15 to 25 seconds, depending on Agility level.

Resting[edit | edit source]

Resting helps the player restore energy at a faster rate than standing still or walking, but at a slower rate than listening to a musician whilst resting. Resting takes 25 seconds to recover your run energy from 0 to 100% regardless of Agility level.

Useful tips[edit | edit source]

The rest option under the run button.
  • It should be noted that running and walking is slightly slower than running and resting, because the tiles travelled to time taken ratio for running and walking is approximately 1.81, while for running and resting it is 2.06
  • Players can temporarily run even when this option is switched off by holding down the control (Ctrl) key on the keyboard when they click the mouse to select a destination. This can be very useful when an item appears on the ground; if the player holds down control and clicks on the item, then their on-screen character will automatically run to the item and pick it up.
  • Players who have completed As a First Resort can dive in the salt-water spring in Oo'glog. Continually restores run energy to 100% every few seconds for 10–23 minutes depending on Agility level. Players will receive an in-game message when the effect has worn off.
  • Players who have 52 Summoning can make use of the spirit terrorbird familiar which has a Spirit Terrorbird scroll (Tireless Run). This allows players to run indefinitely.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

The old energy interface.
  • On the 19 August 2008, a hidden update was made so that the "run" option can now be turned on and off via the run percentage icon next to the minimap in the top right of the screen.
  • After the updates of 25 March 2009, if you right-clicked the Run icon, an option would appear saying "Rest". Clicking on it would give you the message "Coming Soon". On 23 April 2009, a Developers' Blog was released informing players of the new "rest" option that they are working on which allows players to restore their run energy quickly without the use of potions or spirit terrorbirds.
  • There is a glitch with the run button when the run icon next to the minimap is highlighted but the player is walking, not running. This happens when all run energy is lost and then, with 0 energy, turn run on. This will show run as on but the player will be walking. Jagex has yet to fix the glitch.
  • After a game of Fist of Guthix, energy will be restored to 100%. Dying will also fully restore energy (as well all other reduced stats).
  • Using the magical feather will instantly deplete a player's run energy. Using it when a player's run energy is already depleted awards the Exhausted Resting rest override.
