Unlocking the pet will prompt a server-wide broadcast and the following message: Congratulations, you have unlocked Effy the effigy!
Effy displays how many effigies a player has opened when it is examined. Effigies opened before 16 January 2018 are not included in Effy's tracking, as prior to that date the information was not recorded.
Players who have unlocked the Effy pet can unlock four cosmetic override versions of the pet: Jeffy, Geffy, Leffy, and Seffy. Cosmetic overrides can be obtained by earning incubator points with Vicendithas during or after completing the Effigy Incubator distraction and diversion.

Players upon receiving the pet will get the broadcast News: Player has found Effy the effigy after opening [number] effigies!, the examine text used in the showcase.
The player can ask Effy what an ancient effigy really is. While most of its explanations seem absurd, it claims that some of them are true. The most plausible suggestions are that effigies are "a stored memory of the dragonkin homeworld" or "the dragonkin equivalent of a notebook", both of which align with their known function as vessels of ancient knowledge.
Effy's line about not feeding effigies after midnight is a reference to the film Gremlins, where the third rule in caring for mogwai is to never feed it after midnight.
It is possible to obtain Effy without opening any effigies by opening Effigy Incubator effigies, and using the lamp obtained as a reward from the Rebuilding Edgeville miniquest.
The unlock hint still mentions Mandrith instead of Vannaka, even if the former no longer appears in the miniquest.
