The metallic object is obtained by reaching inside of the mithril smelter in the adamant dragon dungeon during the quest Curse of the Black Stone. It can be turned into the metallic object (heated) by having the adamant dragon in the dungeon heat it up. It can then be cooled into the metallic object (brittle) by attaching it to a rope and dropping it down the pit. Finally, that can be deciphered when broken on the stone dragon head in the dungeon.
