Optimum Magic Weapons (F2P)

[edit | edit source]

Spell

[edit | edit source]

Simply put, use the best spell you've got. They're all fairly cheap now, and even unmitigated rune usage with the most expensive spells can be offset by the profits made during combat. Mine is Fire Blast.

Option 1: Staff

[edit | edit source]

Staves cast once per 6 ticks, with 150% damage per cast. This is equivalent to one 100% cast every 4 ticks. This option may be useful if your goal is spike damage with abilities, such as in PVP, or if you have a really powerful staff; however, few decent F2P staves exist.

The best of the easy ones is the Mindspike, which is a reward from the entry level quest series in Taverley and Burthorpe.  The mindspike can be set to any of the four elemental runes to save runes with casting, similar to the basic elemental staves. This combined with its slightly superior stats, means it supercedes the Staff, the Magic Staff, all four Basic Elemental Staves, the Tower Mindspike and the Skull Sceptre in any and all capacities.

Possible superior staves that require large amounts of effort to obtain in comparison are the Gravite Staff, Law Staff, and Nature staff from Dungeoneering rewards and the Runecrafting staff from the Great Orb Project rewards (confirmation needed). Just out of reach are the runic staves from the Runespan rewards, which, for some inexplicable reason, are all P2P only.

Summary: This is the economic option, as it is fewer casts for the same damage and allows rune-saving abilities.

Option 2: Wand and Shield

[edit | edit source]

Wands, on their own, cast once per 4 ticks at 100% damage. At first glance this seems to be a clearly superior option to the staff, since you have an extra hand free but you do the same damage. However, this option requires greater rune usage; not only do you forgo the rune saving abilities of common staves, but more spells are cast to do the same amount of total damage.

The upside is that in your free hand you can wield a shield and get everything that comes with that. It unlocks shield abilities, including the 40% HP heal every 5 minutes ability (very useful when grinding), as well as providing armor and health bonuses (useful in dangerous areas).

For a typical F2P mage loadout, the best wand and shield max out at the Bat wand and the Batwing shield at Magic level 50 (possible other requirements?). Melee and Ranged shields could be substituted if you like toying with the armor formulas.

Summary: This is the defensive option, as it allows the use of a shield.

Option 3: Wand and Book/Orb

[edit | edit source]

When wielding a book/orb in addition to a wand, your casting speed increases to once per 2 ticks, but each attack only does 75% of the nominal damage. This equates to one 100% cast every 2.66 ticks damage-wise; compared to the above options this is the clear winner in terms of damage done over time. The chief drawbacks are the loss of defensive abilities when using a shield and an even higher rune usage than using a wand alone.

The only option to mitigate the high rune usage is the Tome of Frost from Dungeoneering; however, it only provides water runes, necessitating the use of water spells rather than the potentially more damaging earth or fire spells in order to take advantage of this ability. Otherwise, the best offhand to use is the Batwing Book, which is superior in stats even to the much harder to obtain Tome of Frost. Again, the best main hand is the Bat wand, and both pieces require Magic level 50.

Summary: This is the offensive option, as it allows more damage per unit time.

Tactics

[edit | edit source]

If one uses option 3 as I do, then one has many more auto attacks than if one uses a staff. Therefore an extremely viable strategy when grinding/farming is to use basic abilities to charge up to 100% adrenaline, then activate Momentum. You no longer need to worry about casting abilities for the next 20 minutes (or until you log out), and all your attacks do more damage. In addition, you automatically use some abilities for even more damage.

If you need healing, switch out your book/orb for a shield and deactivate Momentum by using abilities manually. Charge up to 100% adrenaline and use Rejuvenate (requires Defence level 52). Bam! 40% HP healed every 5 minutes. Depending on your situation, you might not even need food.

To have an easier time killing things, try to find enemies that are both weak to some sort of magic and tend to either drop stackable items, items you can use without having to leave, or items worth alchemizing. For example, coins and noted items stack; leather and spider silk (using thread) can be immediately crafted into goods (which can then be alchemized); and black items or better are usually worth alchemizing. Also, if your monster drops gems, bring a gem bag; it's a relatively cheap Dungeoneering reward, and you can keep more of those valuable, yet unstackable drops. Make sure you bring nature runes and fire runes for alchemy of the good stuff, and leave the cruddy stuff behind. In essence, if you have enough runes and other stackable consumables, you could kill things indefinitely.
