For a decent start, its recommended that the player is at least level 74 smithing to do this method since at that level you have a 10% chance of doubling a bar without using any resources while smelting. If you happen to be at level 77 smithing you can smelt the bars 50% faster. It should take around 72 seconds to make an inventory of Necronium bars when used with Superheat form, deposit them into your metal bank and then start the process over again. This makes it possible to smith 3,000 bars an hour and with the 10% chance of doubling the bar while smelting you get, on average, 3300 bars an hour.
For optimal rates, unlocking Varrock armour 3 (+ completing the hard New Varrock achievements), alongside a augmented crystal hammer (at item level 20) with Fortune 3, and the Modified blacksmith's helmet grants an additional 3.3% chance of getting an extra bar, with this on average you could expect to see 3399 bars an hour.
Smithing provides the best way to get clues via the Prosper perk at a rate of 1/960 per bar smelted, if you happen to have your augmented crystal hammer levelled up to level 20, this will raise the chance to 1/864.
