Summoning and subjugation

edit

Maro was first summoned by the necromancer Sherok during the God Wars of the Third Age. Sherok served the armies of Zamorak, under the command of the demon K'ril Tsutsaroth, and was charged with safeguarding the Zamorakian godsword hilt. Though he sought to be free of his control, Maro acted as Sherok's assistant in the torture, killing and subsequent further torture of captured Aviansie prisoners in an effort to discover the location of the godsword blade. One of their victims was a scout by the name of Larsan.

K'ril regarded these efforts futile, as he was already aware of whatever information Sherok's methods were able to uncover. He threatened Maro to remind Sherok that his sole value to the Zamorakian forces lay in protecting the hilt, and that beyond this Maro himself served no purpose to Zamorak whatsoever. Despite this, Sherok continued to act upon his own ambitions. Upon learning that the blade was being held at an Armadylean encampment in the Black Briar Wood, he staged a poorly planned ambush which ultimately failed and revealed the Zamorakian position to the enemy. K'ril intervened and drove the Armadylean forces into the nearby Temple of Lost Ancients, trading them inside. For his gross incompetence, K'ril executed Sherok and marked Maro for death. Tstanon Karlak and Zakl'n Gritch pursued Maro as he fled. He was eventually intercepted and rescued by the Aviansie scout Lea'anna, to whom he introduced himself as an "escaped prisoner".

Armadylean extrication

edit

Lea'anna escorted Maro inside the Temple of Lost Ancients, where the Armadyleans had fortified themselves. There, Maro was brought before the Armadylean General Kree'arra, to whom he disclosed several Zamorakian plans and strategies, including the fact that they had forged a hilt of their own, infused with the power of Zamorak. Recognising the severity of this development, Kree'arra called for aid from his Saradominist allies. Despite his efforts, the Zamorakian army succeeded in breaching the Temple’s outer fortifications shortly thereafter. As the Temple was overrun, Kree'arra entrusted the godsword blade to Lea'anna, his fastest scout, and ordered her to flee with it while he remained behind to confront K'ril Tsutsaroth directly.

Marro and Lea'anna escaped the Temple through a secret passage. During their escape, Lea'anna revealed to Maro that in her youth, she had previously known a being similar to him, a skull-like familiar that had assisted her father in his work. She also stated that she was aware of Maro’s role in the death of her mate, Larsan, but indicated that she forgave him. They were soon discovered by Zamorakian mages who had followed them through the caverns, and both Maro and Lea'anna were wounded in the ensuing struggle. Before the final blow could be struck, however, their attackers were routed by the arrival of a Saradominist contingent led by Captain Viss. After assisting Lea'anna, Viss discovered that she was carrying the godsword blade. Expressing regret, Viss fatally stabbed her without further explanation before securing the blade and ordering his men to restrain Maro but leave him unharmed.
