Fourth cousin once-removed

[edit source]

I'm reposting this here as I realized I posted it in probably the incorrect place (under Roald II's discussion page), or at least this is the most optimal place to post it:

Lore says that Tarquin and King Roald are fourth cousins once removed, but this chart shows them as third cousins once removed. I'm a genealogist, I know this stuff. I may've fixed the Asgarnian royal family tree but this one's definitely beyond my ability (and I don't really have time right now). The other issue is that fourth cousins once removed can look two different ways; depending which of the two relatives is in the "removed" generation. Essentially, it's like this: First cousins are children of siblings, what everyone just calls a "cousin." However, in English, the child of your first cousin (or the first cousin of your parent) is called a "first cousin once removed," because the two of you are not equidistant from your most recent common ancestors (MRCAs). The MRCAs for first cousins are of course each person's grandparents, but for first cousins once-removed, the MRCAs are one relative's grandparents but the other's great-grandparents. The system repeats this way: Second cousins are grandchildren of siblings, making their MRCA their great-grandparents. Third cousins are great-grandchildren of siblings, and this is what this chart shows for Roald's mother and Tarquin Marjoribanks -- Their great-grandparents were siblings, putting the "removed" generation on Roald's end. If Tarquin has any children, they would be Roald's fourth cousins. However, the lore states that Roald and Tarquin are fourth cousins once-removed. If the "removed" generation is on Roald's end, then the MRCA between Roald and Tarquin needs to be one generation further back: This would make Roald's mother and Tarquin fourth cousins, thereby making Roald and Tarquin fourth cousins once-removed, which is consistent with the lore. The other option is for the "removed" generation to be on Tarquin's end -- In this case, Tarquin needs to be repositioned as the grandchild of an ancestor of his edited into where he currently is on the chart. This'd make Tarquin's parent the fourth cousin of Roald -- They'd be great-great-grandchildren of siblings -- Thereby showing Tarquin, as one generation removed from Roald's fourth cousin, making them fourth cousins once removed. Of course we don't know which is the correct relationship in the lore (whether or not Tarquin is in Roald's mother's generation, or in the generation of any future children of Roald's), but if the family tree chart is going to show it at all, then whoever fixes it should pick one of the two.

I tried my best to explain the problem as clearly as possible, but I know that genealogical relationships can be really confusing for laypeople/non-genealogists. If necessary, please feel free to message me or reply for further clarification!

Lol I fixed it. That was easier than I expected. I went with the option where Tarquin's parent is in Roald's generation as opposed to Roald's parent in Tarquin's (which is what previously was showing when the chart had the two of them as third cousins once-removed), on account of Tarquin appearing younger than Roald, at least by a little. Still though, canonically it could be either way; They're distant relatives and generations can get very wacky in very little time. I have only a second cousin (her grandmother was my grandfather's older sister -- they were 10 years apart) who is roughly 60 years my senior. She's even older than my Dad and all his siblings. The fourth-cousin once-removed relationship between Roald III and Tarquin could very easily be reversed; The canon simply doesn't state which way it truly is as of right now.
