Vial detail.png

A vial is a glass container that players generally use in Herblore to make and store potions. They can fill a vial of water by using it on a water source (all the vials in their inventory will fill automatically). Players can also use the lunar spell Humidify to fill vials with water.

The ability to throw away vials when finishing a potion can be toggled with Bob Barter (herbs). This ability may also be toggled in Gameplay Settings under the "Interfaces" tab, in the "Inventory" section.

Obtaining vials[edit | edit source]

Decanter[edit | edit source]

One fast method to obtain vials is via decanting. The player can take a noted stack of 2–4 dose potions to a decanter, decant those potions into 1 dose potions, and then decant the potions back into the 2–4 dose versions. This will result in the original noted 2–4 dose potions and a number of noted empty vials. The player should then deposit the empty vials into their bank to repeat the process -- otherwise, decanting into 1 dose potions will use the empty vials. The decanter will charge you 2 per vial supplied.

Note that this method will not work if 'Destroy empty vials when decanting potions' option is checked under Settings -> Interfaces -> Inventory.

Members[edit | edit source]

Two vials spawn in Frincos's Fabulous Herb Store in south-west Entrana as well as a house in Mort'ton. The respawn rate is two every two minutes. A vial is also obtained through the Swept Away quest.

Non-members[edit | edit source]

Even though vials are mostly used in Herblore (a members-only skill past level 5), they are not a members-only item. One way to obtain a vial for non-members is by having the apothecary make a strength potion for the player. The player needs to supply him with a limpwurt root and red spiders' eggs, and pay him 5 coins. The player can empty this vial or drink all the doses of the potion to obtain an empty vial. However, the potion itself is worth more than the empty vial.

Jatix sells a small amount of them in his shop in the eastern part of Taverley.

Before it was removed, players could obtain a good number of vials simply by waiting outside Bounty Hunter, as player-killers used potions and then dropped the vials because they could not be taken into the craters.

Making vials[edit | edit source]

Using the Crafting skill, members can make their own vials. This requires a glassblowing pipe, and molten glass. 33 Crafting is required to make the vial.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Real vials are cylindrical, whereas in RuneScape they have a wide bottom and tapered top, resembling Erlenmeyer flasks.
  • Vials with nothing in them used to be named empty vial.
  • As of 30 September 2022, 100,975,318,296 vials were owned by active players.[1]
