Lady Vanescula Drakan (pronounced /vənɛskjuːlə drəkʰaːn/), Mistress of Darkmeyer, is one of four Drakan siblings alongside her brothers, Ranis, Draynor and Lowerniel. She and Ranis ran Meiyerditch and Darkmeyer for Lord Drakan, until her brothers were slain and she took over rule of Morytania alongside Safalaan and Efaritay. She is the main antagonist of the Myreque quest series.

Vanescula manages the dig site of Everlight and can be hired as a Consultant researcher in the Archaeology skill.

History[edit | edit source]

Vanescula and her brothers originally came from Vampyrium.

In the RuneScape novel "Return to Canifis", It is revealed that she is immensely powerful, indeed more powerful than the Black Prince and possibly stronger than Lord Drakan himself. She enjoys using creatures and people as "pawns" in her games with other vampyres; for example, she tricks Jerrod into killing the Wyrd, a creature under command of the Black Prince, who had murdered dozens of civilians; this causes Jerrod to be banished from Morytania. She is also presumably behind the Vyres and Werewolves that attacked the Myreque during their escape.

Legacy of Blood This article or section contains information from Legacy of Blood.
It is generally considered canon unless contradicted in-game, in which case the game takes precedence.

In "Legacy of Blood" Vanescula was first seen by Gar'rth during a great vampyric slaughter, where she taunted him and killed the little girl that Gar'rth tried to hide from the vampyres. Later Vanescula got interest in Gar'rth and gave him the blood mark, which made him immume to all vampyre-powers, even her own, so he would be able to kill his father. When Gar'rth, Vanstrom Klause, Kendrick and Ben Strainge successfully managed to obtain Sunspear, a blisterwood dagger capable of killing Vyres, she and her vyre allies captured and took them to Castle Drakan.

There Vanescula asked Tenebra how he would cross the Salve but she was double-crossed by him and was stabbed in her stomach by the Sunspear. Grievously wounded, she then fell off the balcony of the castle and injured one of her wings. She landed somewhere in the swamp below, where Malak found her. To her great annoyance, as she would be relying on him and in his debt, the vampyre lord decided to help her.

Shortly before the Second Battle of the Salve began, Malak visited Gar'rth and brought him to Vanescula who handed him the Sunspear and told him to kill Tenebra only on the western side of the River Salve. When the battle was nearing its end and the River Salve had been strengthened by rune essence, Vanescula, leaning on Malak's shoulder, approached the bridge to Paterdomus from the Morytanian side. She ignored the weakening Tenebra's, who had lost control over his army of undead, pleas, and stated that she would not and could not order his army to invade the west. She telepathically instructed Kara-Meir to kill Tenebra with the Sunspear, then left with Malak. The Black Prince attempted to defend himself from his attackers, but was easily dispatched by Castimir, using Albertus Black's phosphorous, and Kara, who pierced his skull with the dagger.

The Darkness of Hallowvale[edit | edit source]

Vanescula is first seen by the adventurer during the quest The Darkness of Hallowvale, while doing a scouting mission for Safalaan. She, her brother, and Vanstrom Klause drink some freshly tithed blood before flying away. Eventually Vanstrom Klause spots the adventurer and nearly kills them, but Vanescula's servant, Sarius Guile, stops him before doing so. Angered, Vanstrom flies away and Sariues tells you that Vanescula has interest in a man named Safalaan.

Vanescula does not appear during Legacy of Seergaze but the creation of the Ivandis flail does increase her interest of The Myreque.

Meeting the Myreque[edit | edit source]

The following takes place during The Branches of Darkmeyer.

Vanescula leaves a letter inside a mysterious cave within Burgh de Rott. Veliaf Hurtz, the leader of the Burgh de Rott cell, spotted Vanescula, but was unable to discern her identity. He informed the adventurer, who found the letter inside the cave.

The adventurer brought the letter to Safalaan, who is suspicious of the letter but sends them to meet with the mysterious contact. On the way, they encounter two vyrewatch, one of whom wants to take a tithe, but is stopped by the other, who claims that this is "the one" and that they'd have a worse time with "her". The adventurer soon arrive at the meeting spot and encounter a young girl, "Nessie", who reveals herself to be Vanescula. Two other agents, Vertida Sefalatis and Mekritus A'hara, spring out to attack her, but Vanescula teleports them a short distance away so that she could have a private conversation with the adventurer.

Now alone, she offered a deal to the adventurer, whom she knew was affiliated with the Myreque: she would help them infiltrate Darkmeyer, as she sees Lowerniel unfit to rule. Though she could have disposed of him herself, it would not bode well with the vampyre nobles, and as such, having a third party would make the operation as smooth as possible. She was aware that they had been to the Haemalchemy laboratories, which revealed that the vampyres could survive without consuming blood.

Vanescula offered to smuggle them into Darkmeyer, where they would find the Blisterwood Tree, and use it to create weapons stronger than the Ivandis flail. Disappointed that Safalaan did not meet her in person, she gives them another letter to bring to him instead. Vanescula also informed them that they were now her "personal" blood tithe, preventing the vyrewatch of Meiyerditch from attempting to intercept them.

The adventurer brought the letter to Safalaan, who suggests they enter Darkmeyer. Vertida informed them of a weak point in the walls through a drainage pipe, where Vanescula was waiting for them. She informed them that they would need to disguise themselves, as the vampyres of Darkmeyer are much more independent and that her protection will not cover them in the city. Furthermore, if they are to reach the Blisterwood Tree, they will first have to build up a reputation amongst the populace. The adventurer returns with vampyre clothing, which she helps repair.

They manage to attain high status with the middle tier, allowing them to move up to the upper tier. Here, Vanescula warns them to be wary of her brother Ranis, as it would mean death should they cross him. She initiates them into the upper tier, giving them a harmless blood mark in the process. The adventurer gains the liking of the vampyre nobility, allowing them to enter the Arboretum, but not before Ranis gives them a blood mark of his own.

Once the adventurer enters the Arboretum, they begin the process of restoring the tree's health. However, Ranis begins to suspect the vampyre is actually a human, and demands they come out. Vanescula arrives to see what the commotion was all about. Ranis informed her that he suspected the vampyre was a human and that they had fooled her, and that he would fix the situation. Vanescula slyly told Ranis that he was a fool before killing him. The adventurer soon came out with some blisterwood logs. Vanescula told them not to head outside as she had killed Ranis and that it had caused a commotion. She told them that she had to kill him because they were nearly compromised, and that Ranis would ensure they would never be able to set foot in Darkmeyer again if he had caught them. She also informed them that Vanstrom had discovered the location of the Meiyerditch hideout, before asking for the medallion they had found in Burgh de Rott. Vanescula then enhances the medallion, returning it to its original state.

The adventurer confronts Vanstrom and kills him after a long battle. Vanstrom summons several bloodveld minions upon his death, which Vanescula dispatches of easily. With another major threat gone, Vanescula destroys Vanstrom's accumulated evidence and informs the vampyres of his death.

Once the quest The Branches of Darkmeyer is completed, the player may speak to Vanescula in order to change their vampyric name.

The Lord of Vampyrium[edit | edit source]

The following takes place during The Lord of Vampyrium.

Vanescula assists the Myreque in an attempt to take out Drakan. Their attempt fails and both her and Mornid are sent to the "Bloodletter" chamber, where their blood is slowly sapped and their wings wounded. The adventurer manages to free the two of them and as they attempt to leave, Drakan stops them and throws his spear at Mornid, killing her and appearing to send Vanescula in a state of shock – later revealed to be a ploy to make the Myreque think she was genuinely helping them. After the adventurer kills Drakan, she approaches Safalaan to "tell" him something, but instead bites him, to the remaining survivors' shock. After Safalaan falls to the ground, she explains that with his sacrifice, she now has Icyene blood in her and can go through the River Salve. With her learning Haemalchemy from Safalaan before seemingly killing him, the vampyre society will now need more people, giving the remaining more freedom, dismissing the remaining survivors, planning to invade Misthalin so the vampyres can live like how they used to under the Zarosian Empire.

Vanescula takes Safalaan's blood.

Following this, Vanescula had the blood stores from the Vampyrium castle brought over to Gielinor, before having the portal connecting the two planes destroyed. She then proceeded to share the blood amongst the nobles and vyres, and informed them of her brother's plan to kill all the human-born vyres to bring the true-borns back to Vampyrium, claiming that she was the one who killed him. This in turn made her obtain the loyalty of all the vampyres. She is still found in the same location as before after the quest ends, where the adventurer can confront her over her "betrayal". Vanescula will defend herself by stating that Safalaan was willing to die for his cause. Regardless of the adventurer's decision towards her plan to invade Misthalin, she states that she has no grudge against them, having grown to appreciate their "mild competency".

Attempted invasion[edit | edit source]

The following takes place during River of Blood.

Following on her word to invade Misthalin, Vanescula sent a group of scouts past the River Salve which are killed by the adventurer. After Drezel and Ivan help the adventurer strengthen the Salve, she arrives and they attempt to reason with her to no avail. She sends four Vampyre Juvinates which turn into feral vampyres much to her surprise, as the river had been strengthened before her arrival. After a Wyrd appears, she orders it to leave, but it refuses and fatally wounds Drezel before the adventurer routs it. She warns the humans that she will be back again soon before departing.

After the adventurer performs several operations in Castle Drakan and strengthening the Salve even further with an extreme Guthix potion, Vanescula returns again and asks them if Misthalin has decided to surrender. After she realises they won't surrender, she sends four Vyrewatch, presuming that they will be able to handle the Salve's power. Much to her surprise and shock, they turn back into humans. She orders her army to attack, but the werewolves rebel, stating that they smell the winds of defeat and leave. Safalaan, in Wyrd form, arrives, and she orders him to kill Ivan, though he refuses. Safalaan states that when he became the Wyrd, he understood what she had felt for thousands of years, and implored her to stop asserting herself onto the world and care for her people. Efaritay supported her son's judgement, knowing that she was different from Lowerniel. Initially against it as she believes the vampyres will die if they cannot leave, she grudgingly accepts an offer with Aeonisig to make Morytania a better place for both vampyres and humans.

As Efaritay and Safalaan return to Castle Drakan, Vanescula stays behind briefly to talk with the adventurer, telling them about a time before nobility when House Drakan was narrowly defeated by House Jovkai. As was their custom, they prepared a banquet in advance, but Lord Jovkai had already prepared his own for them. Vanescula greatly resented being a stranger in her own home and discreetly killed Jovkai by poisoning his drinking glass, though it took her a year to do so. She warns them that she will do the same to them if she becomes uncomfortable, before returning to Darkmeyer.

Vanescula continues to remain in the same location as before, where Vanescula stated that the elites of vyre society were having difficulty accepting the new norm. She did not mind if the adventurer killed a few of them, seeing that it would cut down on her rivals and allow her to keep the others in line for the alliance's benefit. She may also be encountered atop Castle Drakan, where she jokingly states that the alliance is failing.

Seren's council[edit | edit source]

The following takes place during Desperate Times.

Vanescula was invited by Seren to join her council and learned of the existence of the Elder Gods. How she managed to get across the River Salve remains unknown, though it is likely the Icyene blood she took from Safalaan played a role in the crossing. When Seren decided that they should create a garden to appease them, the World Guardian had the option use Mort Myre's swamps as the location of the garden. She was unable to offer a workforce or seeds however.

Despite offering the swamp, the plan fell apart as the group could not find common ground. If the Fremennik were assigned to Mort Myre, Brundt refused to let his men work there, as he believed the land to be full of strange spirits and dark omens. She believed that they should take direct action, though she immediately agreed when Kerapac came in and offered another solution. Following his betrayal, Vanescula agreed that they needed to find and kill him.

The following takes place during Desperate Measures.

After Kerapac was stopped by the World Guardian and bound to Jas as her servant, Vanescula believed that death was a too much of a kindness to him, seeing how Zanik had died several times but kept returning.

Everlight expedition[edit | edit source]

Vanescula agreed to fund an expedition to Everlight and provide vampyre labour, led by Professor Tony. She believed that it would uncover information about her vampyre ancestors who had fought for Zamorak. However, only remains of Icyene were discovered. This angered Vanescula, as the Icyene were the vampyres' enemies during the God Wars. In a letter to Professor Tony, she told him that the time sprites had moved out to sea and raised a sunken lighthouse from the water. Both the time sprites and the lighthouse had begun glowing so brightly that Vanescula and other vampyres were unable to sleep. Her sources told her that the lighthouse was Everlight, a symbol of hope for Icyene. She threatened Professor Tony and ordered him to make the lighthouse stop glowing.[1]

Eventually, Vanescula heard of the adventurer's growing talents in Archaeology. Having been acquainted with them, Vanescula invited them to Everlight to assist in the excavation efforts, namely to extinguish the light coming from the lighthouse. She revealed that the alliance was progressing significantly despite her initial reservations, so she began devoting more time to keep it afloat.

The adventurer was able to access the lighthouse and take some of Everlight's light after discovering various artefacts scattered across the digsite, but were unable to extinguish it completely. Despite this, Vanescula thanked them for their assistance, as they were able to access the lighthouse at the very least.

Personality[edit | edit source]

Like most other vyres, Vanescula tends to be unimpressed with the human race, often rolling her eyes when talking with them. However, unlike most vyres that are glad with their lifestyle, Vanescula often likes change, as shown during the Branches of Darkmeyer where she helps the player obtain blisterwood logs to make weaponry, enchants Drakan's medallion for them and protects their cover by killing her brother.

It is unknown if Vanescula tries to do what is best for her people as a facade for other plans, as Drakan tells the player she will "betray them" before they kill him. When talking to Sentinel Plaugemanst after The Lord of Vampyrium, he tells the player that she stopped Drakan from executing his plans to kill all the human-born vyres. It is also revealed that in River of Blood, she hates losing.

Powers and abilities[edit | edit source]

Like all vampyres, Vanescula can only be harmed by blisterwood weapons or the Ivandis flail due to her immunity to other weapons and her mind reading. She can shapeshift into the form of a human girl to avoid suspicion. She has various offensive abilities:

  • Dart: Vanescula charges in a straight line at great speed, damaging anything in her path.
  • Shadow stalk: Vanescula teleports to her opponent, damaging them.
  • Shriek: Vanescula emits a shriek, dealing damage to multiple opponents at once.
  • Melee: Vanescula strikes an opponent with her arm.

Archaeology research[edit | edit source]

Vanescula may be recruited to the player's research team as a part of the Archaeology skill once the player has the completed all the mysteries at Everlight.

She has the following effects on the research expeditions:

Researcher Location Speed modifier Cost modifier Additional perk
Vanescula Everlight +12% +12% Taskmistress: Significantly increases the research speed

She appears as a consultant in the Team Management interface, and her description is "Highly intelligent and knowledgeable, and keeps people on task."

Update history[edit | edit source]

The update history project is a work-in-progress – not all updates to this topic may be covered below. See here for how to help out!
  • patch 3 May 2016 (Update):
    • Players can once again change their vyre title and get advice from Vanescula on how to increase reputation with them after completing the quest River of Blood.
  • hotfix 14 September 2015 (Update):
    • Ensured that Vanescula appears in Burgh de Rott for all players eligible to begin The Lord of Vampyrium.
  • patch 10 August 2009 (Update):
    • Inconsistent spelling of "Drakan".

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • The “-cula” in her name is a reference to the fictional vampire Count Dracula, the main antagonist of Bram Stoker’s 1897 horror novel Dracula.
  • As of The Lord of Vampyrium, Vanescula is the only Drakan sibling alive, after the deaths of her brothers Count Draynor, Lowerniel Drakan, and Ranis Drakan; the latter of whose death was directly caused by Vanescula herself.
  • Vanescula's examine text in vampyre form, "Don't move. Maybe she won't be able to see you." is a reference to the movie Jurassic Park. In the movie, it is believed that Tyrannosaurus had vision based around movement, and thus couldn't see prey if it didn't move. This prompts the protagonist to say a similar line when faced against the film's (female) Tyrannosaurus.
  • Vanescula is briefly controlled by the player after the fight with Vanstrom to defeat his bloodveld guardians.
  • Vanescula's combat level, according to Jagex's Top Trumps, is 205.
  • If you are wearing the upgraded Mask of Sliske during The Branches of Darkmeyer quest, it is possible to kill Vanescula. There is a chance of a wight ranger spawning when you attack her. Though it shows her combat level as 424, she only has 1 life point. After she pushes you back, the ranger will shoot and kill her, dropping bones. She will respawn after a short time, and you can talk to her.
  • Vanescula received a graphical update with the release of The Lord of Vampyrium.
  • Vanescula is notable for being stabbed twice by the Sunspear under similar circumstances - both times, it was from a royal vampyre, she fell off Castle Drakan, and she assisted in dispatching them.
