Welcome![edit source]

Hi there, TheLastWordSword, and welcome to the RuneScape Wiki!

Thank you for taking an interest in our wiki. If you have any trouble or need help, feel free to ask questions on my talk page or any other editor's talk page. Also, you could look at a help page or you could shout out on the local forums. We hope you like it here and decide to stay!

Here are a few pages to help out new editors such as yourself:

Please sign your name on talk pages by using four tildes (~~~~) or use the "sign" button (Signature button.png) above the edit box. This will automatically produce your name and the date. Signing your comments is important, as it lets other editors know who has posted which comments.

Again, welcome!  Tien  21:47, February 2, 2010 (UTC)

Personal Image[edit source]

InformationHello. An image or video that you have uploaded appears to be personal. Personal files should not be hosted on the RuneScape Wiki (see RS:NOT#HOST). If you want to add a picture or video of your RuneScape character, or any other media that doesn't fit in an article, you may upload it on an image hosting site, such as Photobucket or ImageShack. You can then insert it into your userpage simply by copying and pasting the URL where you want to insert it. Also, if you do not wish to use one of the afformentioned sites, you may also upload them on the Photo Share Wiki. Since it is also a wiki, any images it has will also work on this wiki if used correctly. If you have uploaded a picture of your avatar, you can instead directly link to your avatar picture by pasting character name/full.gif for full avatar and character name/chat.gif for chathead. If you need more details feel free to ask any question you have on my talk page. Iiii I I I 22:31, February 2, 2010 (UTC)

I hate to tell you, but that's not just a set of personal images, that's a CONTRIBUTION, OF WHICH I AM RIGHTLY PROUD. I will upload them again, and you will keep your unwashed newb hands off of them until you have read the talk page for the Orb of Oculus!

Ok, that -was- rude, but...[edit source]

I ended up uploading only two images for the discussion page on the Orb of Oculus. Other users with dodgy, unmemorable names keep editing my user page, without discussion or notice. I would like that to stop please.

On a lighter note, I've noticed that there is no Userbox template for total number of questpoints, and would like to know if I should create one myself, or if someone else would prefer their own version. Thanks!

Images preferred in .png[edit source]

Note to myself on capturing images in .png format.

Recapturing the images isn't that hard, but may take awhile in-game. Can I convert the files I alredy have in MSPaint (yes, I think...) and will the image quality suffer (dunno...hope not, saves me a lot of Fishing work!) (unfortunately, answer is obviously yes, and more work)
In Summary:
1) Capture original images in .PNG
2) Crop and process images BEFORE uploading them to RSWikia
3) Mark files for Speedy Deletion Reason (hopefully as few as possible from now)

Uploaded the PNG[edit source]

I succeeded in uploading the png files, but just barely. It was a real pain, and I had to spam-click it into submission, not the best methodology, I know, but it worked. 8-) Would someone else like the hellacious job of deleting the old files? "Take my old files...PL0X!" No such luck, huh? Ok, it'll happen eventually, but I'll have to stomp on buggienesses to get it done. Thanks.

Check out the images of the Shilo underground mine "Karamja Hard #" (#s 1-8) for the images (in .png!!!) for discussion, debate, etc. Where does that discussion take place, for the files themselves or the destination pages??? 0_o

Your "hidden area" images[edit source]

Sorry to burst your bubble, but the image you uploaded is not a hidden place. It's in the same area where you fight the Jungle Demon in Monkey Madness. As such, I have deleted them. If you wish to keep the image on your userpage for any reason, please upload it with either or, not here, since we are not an image-hosting site. Thanks.  Tien  16:15, February 6, 2010 (UTC)

Tons of places are like that, but we don't have images of them taken with the orb because they already exist (and thus they are unnecessary, since we already have images of them). The picture of the Jungle Demon area is already on the Monkey Madness article, with the wooden platform and the gorilla statue. The one you uploaded was essentially a duplicate of that image but with things missing from it. That's why it was deleted, along with the fact that it was not used in the mainspace and also the fact that you used it on your userpage. Images for your userpage should not be uploaded here, but on either of the two sites I mentioned above.
I'm not sure what you mean by the "value" of these images for players who have completed the quest. If you intend to keep these images for yourself so you can remember the quest, then simply upload it on Photobucket or Imageshack, and there you go.
In addition, if you want to mention the fact that you can see the Jungle Demon place from Ape Atoll Dungeon, you could make a trivia section in the article and add it there. I'm not trying to cause you strife or anything; it's how the wiki works.  Tien  16:33, February 6, 2010 (UTC)
I have a feeling you haven't read what I've said. Feel free to keep the images you took for personal use, but just upload them on or instead of on the wiki. Surely you still have them saved in your computer? If you intend to use the images somewhere in the mainspace, I'll undelete them for you since mainspace images can be uploaded here. The reason I deleted them in the first place was because they were unused in the mainspace but were on your userpage (thus making it a personal image).  Tien  17:30, February 6, 2010 (UTC)
          • Clarification of the above: Everyone else got to upload their images of "hidden places", even as I was being denied the same level of participation, because I PHYSICALLY & "COMPUTAIONALLY" COULD NOT put my images on Photobucket at the time, and it wasn't until MONTHS LATER that I found Portable Apps and a Mozilla Firefox browser that runs off a stick. I wanted to be in the middle of this process while it was still ongoing. There is no glory in running up and down the field after the game is OVER. That was the whole purpose of my Catch-22 rubber-hose beat-down described above. If that is NOT the case, why wouldn't a REASONABLE person make an exception for an urgent and otherwise unavoidable exception to a red-tape pendantist's rule, especially in light of RS:AEAE? Taken together with Psycho's BLATANT violation of RS:AEAE, this is starting to look like a "hidden" pattern, no? *****

RE: I'm almost ready to give up...[edit source]

I am too, actually. It seems like you haven't read any of my paragraphs above. Here is the key point you seem to have ignored:

  • You can still upload images for your userpage if you want to. If you want to upload that Jungle Demon place again, do so on or, not here, since are not an image-hosting site. Just make an account on either site, upload the image, and copy and paste the Direct link on your userpage.

Also, no one is stopping you from uploading images on the wiki. Just make sure you're going to put it on the mainspace somewhere, or it will be deleted. This goes for all images. If it's not on an article, then someone will delete it. In addition, make sure that it isn't a duplicate, or someone will most likely delete it too.
Just trying to help.  Tien  19:53, February 6, 2010 (UTC)

When linking to images on other wikis, you need to keep going until you're past the page with the file history/file links on it. For example, if you want to link to File:Banana crate.PNG, you need to click on the image again until you get this link:
Hope this isn't too confusing. O_o --Iiii I I I 21:03, February 6, 2010 (UTC)

Re: Your Userpage Code[edit source]

Nothing on the wiki is owned by anyone, that goes with mainspace, files, templates, etc. Do you mean that you couldn't get Template:Goal to work?? Sorry, but I really can't be of any help since I don't really know much about templates and such. User:Azliq7 is probably the biggest brain on templates and coding and such and you should ask her if you still need help. Unicorn horn dust.png Evil Yanks talk 23:48, February 6, 2010 (UTC)

Upload under Original[edit source]

Re-upload your Music interface picture under the original on the playlist page. This is to prevent the loss of previous versions of that file that others have uploaded. This is for posterity and for consideration. Before uploading an image, check to see if there is an older version of said image. Ryan PM 17:36, February 8, 2010 (UTC)

Interesting that you took our talk to the article to point it out to everyone. My point is that I am not against your image. I also agree that we need a picture of the event. For you to just insert a large picture in the beginning of the article haphazardly looks poor. If you would like to continue this discussion, please do so on my talk page. I will be happy to correct the picture to look more streamlined in the article. Thanks ‎20px‎AtlandyBeer.png 16:48, March 29, 2010 (UTC)
          • In Atlandy's defense (not defence, this is my talkpage) the image was huuuuuuggggee. However, as it showed the entire room, you had to have a certain size to see what the heck was in the room, instead of a smaller pic with a bunch of one-pixel objects. Yes, you *can* click to enlarge, and yes, sometimes big images make a page slower to load. But the traffic to this site has fallen off a cliff due to a dangerous lack of 1337, and the resulting HORRENDOUSLY HHHHHUUUUUGGGGGEEEEE, OBNOXIOUS, LOUD!!!!!!!, AND SILLY "VIAGRA FOR SIX-YEAR-OLDS" ads make the pages load *infinitely* slower than any large pic, and send people away running and screaming. You can see how a positive-feedback loop results from this, right? I originally objected on aesthetic grounds, but my inarticulate artistic impulses were basically spot-on; epic pics and content create traffic and more importantly, CONTRIBUTORS (as opposed to plagiarizing some other fansite). Such contributors, when they bother to show up here, (and "vandalize" the Hunter Gear pages with *ENTIRELY ACCURATE DATA* ((**GASP!!!**)) ) are thinking something like what I say here:

Event Illustration Atlandy, you have no event pic whatsoever. Which is, indeed, not my prettiest moment, but all too true. Of other contributors of even more EPIC material, it would be even MORE true. If we actually had any of those. Which we mostly don't.

Hi, if you're using the Hiscore autoupdate template, you just need to change the player name in the template. I found one at User:TheLastWordSword that looks like this currently:

{{Hiscore autoupdate

RE:Help would be greatly appreciated.[edit source]

Well, we've been going through lately and tagging all non-AA images to be replaced. So even if we did keep yours, it'd just be replaced sometime in the near future. I'm not saying my version of the image is great, but it does have AA so it's nice and smooth. I take it you can't run AA on a shared computer? Even so, your image is half a pixel bigger than the former, has no transparency and no AA so... It has a lot going against it. An ideal uploaded image would be taken with an Orb of Oculus, have all graphic settings at the max except for Lighting Details, fullscreen with the object as big as can be, and have transparency. That would certainly make "everyone" happy. (; sssSp7p.pngIjLCqFF.png 23:36, April 26, 2011 (UTC)

I just visited this page, and you seem to complain about how your images are constantly replaced, and I'm assuming that you know the reason, but I'll say it anyways - a majority of your images do not contain 4x Anti-aliasing, which is not applied to most of your images, such as this particular one. If you wish to improve your images, I suggest you apply 4x AA to your images as it makes the image smoother. Best wishes, Spine :) Recent uploads SpineTalkGuest book 14:53, July 26, 2011 (UTC)

My main insight about Sal's Realm is that they will not be able to pick themselves up off the floor just because they're a platinum site and supported by Jagex. They don't have the manpower or the community needed to build a good fansite. 70% of their images were taken before the HD update three years ago, they're missing gobs of quest guides, and almost everything is circa 2008. They may have a "nice" community, but frankly their site is no longer relevant. They will need to take greater measures than a reskin (which is really all that the redesign was; the content stayed mostly the same). I would encourage them to go open-source like the wiki, because they don't have enough editors to stay current.
On a slightly different note, the wiki would be platinum-supported if not for Jagex's rule about gaming advertisements--that's not my words, that's Jagex's. Wikia is for-profit, and it's absurd to expect them to stop showing game ads on a popular gaming website. The whole fansite program is a transparent ruse to make sure that RuneScape players aren't exposed to other games, thus keeping them on RuneScape and making more money for the company. It's kind of sad, really. ʞooɔ 00:40, September 16, 2011 (UTC)
I have to be honest and tell you that I don't understand what you're saying. I don't think we beat on people who contribute--while our warning/rules templates could probably use a more human factor, I don't see where we beat on people for trying to help. Your examples are foreign to me, and I would appreciate it if you explained what you meant about "Ref. weighing hunter gear to unlock pages" et al.
I'm also a little bit bewildered with what you mean about Merovingian. He's made two edits in the last six years, and I can hardly say that what he left us with was glorious. Your second paragraph completely baffles me. What "new guy jitters"? Also, did you know Merovingian personally? I don't quite understand because you registered in February of last year and he's made one edit in that timespan. I wish I could give you a better response but I don't get what you're saying. ʞooɔ 23:08, September 16, 2011 (UTC)

There are only two entities involved in the ads problem: Jagex and Wikia Inc. The RuneScape Wiki is stuck in the middle in a profiteering game that they're both playing. Wikia is not willing to take an estimated $200k-a-year hit by displaying Domino's and Clorox ads instead of Starcraft ones. We have no say over the ads besides the blatantly inappropriate ones about botting and goldselling, and no amount of community clout is going to change that.

On a different note, we are making progress in building a better community. When you think about it, every other major fansite has a successful forum; we don't, mostly because Wikia has lacked the motivation to do anything about them. The other fansites would have no community to speak of without forums, and it's rather remarkable that we've managed to do what we have without something like that. ʞooɔ 23:22, September 16, 2011 (UTC)

I'm not seeing that in the history of the pages I'm looking at, or the protection log. Could you give me specifics? We all have a tendency to view earlier times as golden, even when sometimes they weren't. Back then, we didn't have anything near the popularity that we do now, we didn't have the speed at which we get new updates, we didn't have anything near this depth of information that we have now, and we had even less of a community back then. Things were not glorious back then any more than they are now. ʞooɔ 23:34, September 16, 2011 (UTC)

I think that the page history has been admin-ed to death (on many pages), but I could be wrong on that point, and as for the protection log, I'm not even sure what that is. (Wikia stuff is a mystery to outsiders, and even Wikipedia isn't doing enough to make it transparent to new people, so that's a Wikia thing as much as anything else.) "Golden age" myth? Maybe some, but my memories of the items in question are too specific for that to hold much weight. :D For specifics, I think what I already gave you is the best that I've got to offer. Check the plant disease talk page for my comment there, as it has a bearing to this discussion. Maybe my lurking days were the peak, and the Wiki declined before Mero left, but that's not the way I remember it. -- PIKWIT 23:54, September 16, 2011 (UTC)

I think it's unlikely that the revisions of the page were deleted, and I need to see actual evidence of it to believe it. Mero was only around for what, 8 months in 2005? His last content edit was in July, about 4 months after he founded the wiki. I hate to break it to you, but the wiki sucked back then. It didn't have 500 pages until he was gone. When did you start lurking?
Anyway, I haven't heard any specifics of what's wrong with the wiki now. As far as I'm concerned, the wiki is in pretty good straits right now, especially compared to other fansites. ʞooɔ 00:04, September 17, 2011 (UTC)
Looking at things a little more closely, it appears that there were 81 pages on this wiki when Merovingian left. There were 6 images and what appears to be two users. Were you ever actually here when Merovingian edited? ʞooɔ 00:17, September 17, 2011 (UTC)

I don't think that I'm going to be able to convince you, and that we have radically different views of the Wiki. (It's as if we were looking at 2 different websites, isn't it? Lol.) So let me leave you with my main points, and I'll try to continue with this converstion later.

The Battle-plan: 1. Include "High end game functionality" [disease talk page], trivia as pages [Banana crate], and teach new contributors who are busy making levels how to do stuff without beating them over the head about coding/procedural errors. 2. Let people "dump-and-pump". If an image isn't "Wiki-fied", put it into good shape and be glad you have someone's eyeballs and effort. I've done the math on this on one of my pages: a half-hour a week times 2Million CH00Bs is 25,000 man-years of work, more page views, fewer cheesy ads, better relation to RSpop, blah blah blah. 3. If you get more community, etc, then you can ask Jagex THE CORPORATION to lean on the MediaWikiaMedia recto-cranial-crats to jam a filter into this mess. 4. My comp here is [email protected]#$ and I'm losing my temper, so I'll try again tomorrow. Thanks. -- PIKWIT 00:45, September 17, 2011 (UTC)

I continue to be bewildered by what you're saying. We include lots of complicated game information, whether it's algorithms, lores, or interesting trivia. We do all these things, and you're just not looking for them. We don't beat people over the head for small things. We really only leave messages for vandalism, and even then not very often.
I don't understand your...idioms. Dump and pump? The simple truth is that we are not going to get 2 million people editing the wiki. It's utterly ridiculous to expect to get even 1% of that number. There's nothing we or anyone else can do to improve that, because most people just aren't interested in fansites or wikis.
We already report the inappropriate ads. Those are not the problem here. The problem is the gaming advertisements. No amount of community will get "recto-cranial crats" to take a multi-hundred-thousand dollar hit. It's a pipe dream.
I really can't tell what you're trying to say, and your explanation raised more questions that it answered. You seem to think we have a poor community, which seems to mostly be because you kept reverting an image you made and got warned for it. You also seem to hero-worship someone who left here 6 years ago, and appear to think that those first four months (when we had less than a hundred pages and no community to speak of) were the best of days. What is going on here? ʞooɔ 01:58, September 17, 2011 (UTC)

Cook, on which of these 100 or so pages did I see the banana crate on Ape Atoll, the one I'm standing right next to in one of my own screenshots??? I believe I am one of the first in RS history to find the route to stand right next to it, or at least to have documented it with a screenshot. I BEGAN THIS EPIC QUEST HERE AT RS WIKI AND NO PLACE ELSE. If you found only 100 pages here when you took over, you got [email protected]# - ****ed, okay?

There are 2 million players on the highscores. If they each spent a half-hour a week for a year here, that's 25,000 full time employees at 40 hrs/wk for a year. It's on one of my pages!!!! Go look!

The Talk:Disease_(Farming) page has a discussion that includes everything but 600 millisecond game tics for cryin' out loud! !What?! -- PIKWIT 22:51, September 17, 2011 (UTC)

You've completely lost me. What the hell is the banana crate and why do you keep talking about it? I am telling you that your supposed glorious wiki in the time of Merovingian did not exist. When he left in July 2005, there were fewer than 100 pages. What are you smoking?
Also, that's completely ridiculous to even imagine that 2 million people will put in 30 minutes a week here. It's worse than a pipe dream, and it's not worth even calculating.
I can't tell anymore if you're trolling me, being elliptical, or genuinely believe you're saying something that is understandable. ʞooɔ 22:55, September 17, 2011 (UTC)
I'm sorry, but how the hell is a banana crate relevant? Why do you keep talking about it? ʞooɔ 23:06, September 17, 2011 (UTC)

Nevermind. You guys have never understood epicness in the game. Go back to BBQ and botting, and forget I said anything. -- PIKWIT 23:11, September 17, 2011 (UTC)

We don't bot, thanks. Also, there's nothing epic about a stupid banana crate. If you were able to comprehend the necessity for factually correct and insightful information, you might realize that. Suppa chuppa Talk 23:14, September 17, 2011 (UTC)

RE:PoP[edit source]

We talked about it in chat and created a list, found here. My edit had absolutely nothing to do with you, and I didn't notice you had even added a new captain until after I saved and checked the history. We had been working on if captains were randomly generated or not since PoP was released. Do not tell other editors to "butt out", this wiki can be edited by anyone. Since, according to the list, they are obviously randomly generated, I removed the captains and deleted their articles. Please revert your edit to the template. sssSp7p.pngIjLCqFF.png 23:55, December 12, 2012 (UTC)

Well if you look at the edit history, you will see that the list was a) only created a couple of hours ago and b) has only had a few people contribute to it. If you have any Captains not on that list, go ahead and add them. Small recharge gem.png AnselaJonla Slayer-icon.png 00:25, December 13, 2012 (UTC)

I have read the relevant conversations, and I have tried to comply with your wishes, but your standards are set way too high by the looks of it. Clearly you only respond to requests, and when you're given a request, you act like I've only just jumped in when I've been following the conversation the entire time What I've done Ciphrius Kane Talk 01:32, December 13, 2012 (UTC)
It was mentioned in Special:Chat, and I know I am not the only one following this, given how it appears in Recent Changes too. I only joined in now because Ansela has gone for the night and I thought you'd like a swift response, and I didn't realise you wanted people to state if they are following your conversations What I've done Ciphrius Kane Talk 01:43, December 13, 2012 (UTC)

I don't plan on monitoring the chat all day just for situations like this. That's what the discussion pages are for, and further that creates a record of why things have been done a certain way to prevent a useless re-hash of a decision. (Sadly, DDD is not a hard and fast rule around here.) If you had mentioned on the discussion page that you had noticed the randomizing of names and planned to delete the list, I would have noticed immediately. I check the discussion pages pretty often before I make an edit, and that's as far as any honest contributor should have to look for guidance on community consensus. You N00BY Wiki-nerds are just creating more hoops for guests to jump through to monopolize the Wiki. I hope that silly little stipend is worth being such asses. Leaving Wikia[edit source]

Hi TheLastWordSword,

If you're not already aware, The RuneScape Wiki is migrating to a new wiki with Jagex's direct support. In order to raise awareness, we currently have an ongoing thread (Forum:Leaving Wikia) that discusses all the changes: Why we're moving, where the new wiki will be, and what our next plans are. It would be great if you could give it a read and a comment so that you're aware of the changes!
