To fix this, you need to put the following at the very top of the page (with the original code):

if (typeof onNewMessage == 'undefined') {
	var onNewMessage = [];
}
if (typeof onStatusMessage == 'undefined') {
	onStatusMessage = [];
}
importScriptPage('MediaWiki:Chat.js/newmessage.js', 'runescape');
