Apology[edit source]

Sannse, I am very sorry for harassing Pordenone on different Fandom wikis. I was sick and tired of him threatening people from Fandom staff. I hope you forgive me, and I promise never to harass him ever again! Thanks!

Keylogger advertisement (quite a few actually...)[edit source]

Hi. Angela is not responding or anything a the moment, so I'll have to rely on you to remove this keylogger advertisement. Keyloggers break the JaGex Rules. Infact, there are quite a few. They are all Google advertisements by the way.

Heading: Hidden Keylog Recorder

Description: Capture all passwords & read emails Used by law enforcement agencies.

HTML link:

That was only the first one.

Heading: Buy WebWatcher KeyLogger

Description: The only key logger used by intelligence agencies worldwide.

HTML Link:

That was the second one.

Heading: Undetectable Keylogger

Description: Secretly record every keystroke! View Remotely! Money back guarantee

HTML Link:

That was the third and final one.

Thanks. Dragon chainbody.pngEmosSysop crown.svg 09:27, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

Hi, I've reported these. Please could you tell me the page you saw them on? And what skin you were using at the time? That will help us track them down and get them stopped. Thanks -- sannse<staff /> (talk) 17:18, 18 October 2007 (UTC)
I'm not really sure what page I saw them on; infact, they appeared on quite a few. I am currently using the Monobook skin, and I was using Monobook as well back then. Dragon chainbody.pngEmosworldSysop crown.svg 09:26, 19 October 2007 (UTC)

Carbon Monobook[edit source]

Hey, I noticed you take part in a lot of our skin discussion and I have a question. The wiki's monobook custom, Carbon, has a problem where the main page shows up as white instead of the normal scroll colour. An image is on this page. Why does this happen? Thanks. Chicken7 >talk 08:11, 22 June 2008 (UTC)

hello[edit source]

ms sannse, i am seeking your help on an idea i have proposed for the wikis, i was thinking about creating a high court system to give users with a reasonable excuse a fair trial to legally discuss the ban, and flaming can be advoided, the thing is, banned user's talks are either redirected or ignored oe even protected (making them virtually untouchable) so, i sent the proposal to the yew grove, but they think that users will have to be unblocked to do so and that can create problems, thereore, can you help in that making the court hearing page accessable to the banned user, but blocking him/her from all other pages(excluding talk)? thank you. because i really ned your help on this one and i know it will not take off with the users thinking it will have to be a democracy to do this. Forumadminship[edit source]

There was recently a discussion about a user being given forumadminship. The user, known as InstantWinston, has achieved consensus to become a forumadmin but not a sysop. As a local bureaucrat, I do not have the power to give another user forumadminship myself. Therefore, I request that you grant the necessary user rights. Thanks in advance. More forum related requests :-P Could you remove “My first Category” from the forums and update to the latest stable version (if it won’t kill the forum) when you have time? In addition, the forumadmin permission does not seem to work for bureaucrats. Quest map icon.png Laser Dragon Task map icon.png 22:25, 9 January 2009 (UTC)

I've managed to remove the category (and kept the Tavern). But I'm having trouble finding controls on authorization... still trying to work that out. The problem is that the phpBB forums are a strange add-on that we allowed on a couple of wikis, but didn't continue to support. We don't add them to new wikis, and we aren't used to dealing them them. Only about 5 wikis out of the 10,000 or so on wikis have these, the others have the wiki forums installed instead. I'm not sure of the solution at the moment, but we'll figure it out :) -- sannse<staff /> (talk) 18:01, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

Uploads Problems?[edit source]

Sorry to bother you but myself and a couple other users have been experiencing problems with image uploads, specially adding transparency to some images and re-uploading them.

To reference, please check out Image:Ghostly.PNG, which has had several attempts to re-upload the image with transparency. The current image does not have transparency, but if you notice it has been reverted to a previous image. If you view that previous image the transparency is present, but not on the current version. Also, if you do a search for Image:Ghostly.png, you will see the image appear as transparent in the search results, but again, not in the actual image article.

Also, on Image:Lesser reborn mage.png, you will notice it may or may not have transparency. To some users it does not, however in my browser it does...but it has not been applied to the template it is linked too here.

Can you please not me know if this is a problem the wikia is experiencing with uploads or if I am doing something wrong... Thanks!

Desysopping[edit source]

Hi, sorry to bother you. Not too long ago, we had a discussion on the Yew Grove about desysopping an sysop who was abusing his sysop tools. The discussion can be found here. As you can see, he closed the discussion at the end, and nobody was sure about what to do, thus nothing was done about the desysopping. The discussion was later archived. Well, Puremexican is no longer active and has quit the RuneScape Wiki, thus there is no reason for him to have sysop rights. So could you desysop him? Thanks. C.ChiamTalk 05:54, 24 February 2009 (UTC)

Well as it happens, we are trying a bit of an experiment at the moment... and we have given Bureaucrats the ability to do this for the wiki. I have done my best to make all the necessary changes. How would I easily find links such as RuneScape:Yew Grove#for example in articles and relink them to the forum discussion? Can you overlook the forum, and see if I did everything correctly? Sorry if I sound too hesitant, I'm not an admin or sysops, just an everyday user, so I don't want the community angry with me if I just destroyed their Grove. I want to make sure it's right. Thanks! 14:43, 12 March 2009 (UTC)
Whoa, loads of work done! :) You can find links to the old page via Special:WhatLinksHere/RuneScape:Yew Grove, but I would suggest that it's not worth fixing all of those by hand. Each will redirect to the main forum page now, which could just have a line saying "see <here> for old archived topics". There will be fewer and fewer clicks on those links over time anyway.

What happened to the "No duplicate wikis" thing?[edit source]

Currently we are having a discussion regarding several duplicate RuneScape Wikis that have been found. Arn't duplicate wikis not supposed to be created? I can't seem to find any policy about this but I know from experiance that if you request a wiki to be created and theres already a wiki about the same topic the request doesn't go through. So why did these ones go through? It would help if you cleared things up there. Thank you. --— Enigma 16:45, 5 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi, the policy on this changed a few months ago, when we introduced automatic wiki creation. If you create a wiki now, you don't wait for approval at all, The wiki is created automatically. So although we still strongly recommend that people work on one wiki per subject, we no longer disallow wikis on the same topic. We can merge wikis, although we wouldn't do so if they were wanted by the founder or there were other reasons to leave them alone. Mostly it's not necessary, these little RuneScape wikis are not going to affect this one :) -- sannse<staff /> (talk) 15:58, 6 July 2009 (UTC)
One of them consists of templates and articles copied and pasted from this wiki and other fansites like Sals Realm. You can tell because they are still full of links that lead to here and there. :s Andrew talk 16:01, 6 July 2009 (UTC)
The rules on copying still apply. It's allowed to take content from this wiki (and any other with a suitable license) but you must give attribution to the source. And, of course, if the source doesn't have a free license, then you can't copy from it (except with permission to put it under the Creative Commons license). I would suggest that you tell the wiki founder that, and ask him to give attribution. If that doesn't work, and there is still a problem, then you can mail Wikia and we will have a look -- sannse<staff /> (talk) 16:56, 6 July 2009 (UTC)

Hello Sannse, on the wiki forums sysops and forum admins are unable to close/delete reported posts. I was wondering if you could change this or delete/close the current reports for us. Oops, missed this one. Do you mean the phpBB forums? Unfortunately, they were an experiment that didn't work out... so they are only on the few wikis that tried them out, and are no longer being added or developed. Which all means that there are some horrible bugs in there, and no way for them to get fixed. And I don't even know how to use the admin controls I'm afraid. Sorry not to be of more help -- sannse<staff /> (talk) 17:22, 13 August 2009 (UTC)

Offensive adverts[edit source]

Hi Sannse. I'd like to bring your attention to a discussion regarding Evony advertisements. There has been unanimous support for the removal of these advertisements, so could you remove them? We are aware of [ this], but we'd just like to establish our standpoint regarding these advertisements. Thanks. C.ChiamTalk 09:34, September 8, 2009 (UTC)

Hi, we are removing these every time we see them... they are universally disliked, including by us! The problem is, that each time ask one of our providers to remove an ad, another appears on a different network (or even on the same network, with different details). I'm afraid it's a "wack-a-mole" situation, and one that sites all over the internet are going though at the moment. We have a new ad guy, who is very keen to get these off the site, so we will keep at it! -- sannse<staff /> (talk) 01:04, September 9, 2009 (UTC)

While we're on the subject of removing ads would it be possible to remove the RuneScape gold selling adverts as well? Andrew talk 01:29, September 9, 2009 (UTC)
Again, it's a case of remove one, and another 3 will appear the next day... but we'll keep trying! On those ad networks that let us block key words, "gold" is one of those we block. If they come through on Google, they are easy to block... but on other networks it can be tricky. All I can say is, keep sending in specifics (see that bad ads page linked above) and we do care about these ads. I don't think we will ever be able to get rid of them completely, but we will certainly keep trying to improve the quality of the ads we show. -- sannse<staff /> (talk) 01:44, September 9, 2009 (UTC)

Concerning ad hiding[edit source]

Hi Sannse, I made some changes to my personal monaco.css file that hides the ads on the main page, but I wasn't sure if it was allowed or not so I commented it for now. In the Terms of Use it says, "Not intentionally block, remove, or otherwise obstruct the proper functioning and view of advertisements by other users, including but not limited to changing or adding javascript or CSS changes to the Service that would prevent the proper display or function of advertisements." Since it specifically mentions by other users, is it OK as long as it's only in my personal .css file? Andrew talk 02:44, October 19, 2009 (UTC)

Hi, it's usually best to use Special:Contact for problems like this, but I've asked Uberfuzzy to have a look -- sannse<staff /> (talk) 16:48, October 28, 2009 (UTC)
Hi, yeah, its a problem we're dealing with right now. Its an issue with our caches (NOT your browser's cache, there isnt anything you can do about it). The new image gets sent to our main server, and stored. Then a "message" gets sent to the cache network (see CDN) that sits between you and us, to let them know that the image has changed, and they should mark their copy as 'old', and the next time it gets requested, they should contact us to get the new file. The problem is occurring where that message is getting delayed or not sent by us (lag/servers backed up on work), or not getting acted on fast enough by them (too much to do?). This causes you till still see the "old" version of the image, and not the new one for a while. This is very noticible if the size changed, because our servers know that the size is different, and send that in the html to your browser, but the image data sent by the CDN network, is of a differnt size, leading to smushed/stretched images. One of the other effects that you guys may have noticed, is that depending on where things are bottlenecked at, some thumbnails (anything resized is considered a thumnail) of images dont change right away (this issue is mostly on our end). We're fine tuning the process that created thumbnails as they are requested to make them get created faster, and also adding new servers to make them even more fasterer. So, some of the problems are on our machines, and we're working on them, but some are on someone elses machines, which we cant fix. We can work with them to identify the problems and get them fixed. The reason not everyone sees the same problems when they happen, is the CDN has "nodes" all over the world, and you might be closer to a different one based on where you are, sort of like cellphone towers. Hi, just wondering, does this whole section of discussion include what's going on at this page? Or am I thinking of a totally different problem? Am I the only one who sees how hectic that page is with a messed up cache? Almost all of those images were updated weeks ago, why haven't they updated yet? They're all... glitchy... O_o So many questions... Quest point cape.pngLil Diriz 77 Talk Summoning-icon.png 07:54, November 12, 2009 (UTC)
It looks to me as though the updated files are glitchy too - look at the file history. The problem seems to be in resizing animated images. The system just isn't coping with calculating the animation when changing the size. I would suggest you upload images that are the size you want to use in the article. -- sannse<staff /> (talk) 23:05, November 12, 2009 (UTC)

Copyright Infringement[edit source]

Hi Sannse,

We are currently considering a ban on this user for breach of several rules, including copyright infringement. I was told by a helper that CR is not for the Wiki users to handle, but for the Wikia staff to handle. If that is indeed the case, then could you please take a look into this case? The copyright infringement occured when Parsonsda copied the contents of several books found in RuneScape word by word into his library. I cannot show you the books at the moment, since they have since been removed by other users for violating copyright law. I will post a link here when I have found them in the page histories.

Thanks, --LiquidTalk 22:55, February 19, 2010 (UTC)

Special:Protectsite[edit source]

Hello Sannse. Recently, it was noticed that a change was made to Special:Protectsite, such that it is now limited to Wikia staff, Helpers and VSTF members. However, the Wiki has experienced several Vandalism Bot attacks in the past, and we would like to be able to use this tool to lock the Wiki and stop Vandalism Bots effectively. We do have a policy regarding the use of the tool and will only use it when absolutely necessary. As such, could permission rights be granted to sysops and bureaucrats for the use of this tool? Thank you. C.ChiamTalk 08:00, March 19, 2010 (UTC)

We have used Special:Protectsite in the past, and it has helped. This Wiki is the target of many attacks. We've been using protectsite for awhile effectively, before Caleb was even around. But only in extreme situations that require it. Please re-grant the rights for us to use it. Thanks. Chicken7 >talk 08:07, March 19, 2010 (UTC)

RevisionDelete[edit source]

Recently there was a vandal who put a name & address in an article, and removing it meant deleting the page and restoring everything but that edit. I did some searching, and found revisiondelete, and saw that it can be used to allow sysops to hide stuff from users, without hiding it from other sysops. Is there any chance that the ability to delete specific edits can be granted to sysops? I'm not asking for oversight, just to hide stuff that can cause serious problems, like personal information, which is currently a hassle to remove. IQEMHVABucket detail.pngrwojy 05:44, April 15, 2010 (UTC)

I've never heard of this tool before, but it seems like one that could benefit our administrators. I myself have also seen similar situations like the above in the past, and it has been a hassle to deal with it. We of course would put appropriate restrictions in place to ensure that admins don't abuse the tool "unknowingly". Cheers, Chicken7 >talk 06:39, April 15, 2010 (UTC)
(Not Sannse) This is one thing that won't be enabled by Wikia; because it is oversight. This tool, unfortunately, is too easily abused and requires too much time to undo to make it practical. Also, it really isn't that much quicker anyways :3 Ajraddatz Talk 13:38, April 15, 2010 (UTC)
That's actually not true, oversight was just a hack. Revisiondelete is much easier to undo, and it isn't oversight, exactly, because it can be enabled for admins to hide an edit from users, and another group can be enabled to hide from admins & other users. SNONZGBucket detail.pngrwojy 15:13, April 15, 2010 (UTC)
He's right, it's not oversight, which is "permanent" and done via Special:HideRevision...However, Special:RevisionDelete is a completely different feature and special page, is not permanent...can be seen by other users with the right, and is easily undoable. And each item "hidden" is logged in the deletion log (example). As for the justification, It'd probably be best to go with Special:Contact. --CharitwoTalk 15:23, April 15, 2010 (UTC)
Sorry, I didn't read through the description well enough. Thanks for the clarification :) Ajraddatz Talk 18:08, April 15, 2010 (UTC)

Deleted images still useable[edit source]

Hi there. Recently one of our editors, Parsonsda, uploaded an image he found on a copyright infringing third party copy of RuneScape, known locally as a private server. He admits this here. I deleted the image and removed the links to the images in his signature, yet he was able to put the deleted images back into his signature by changing the links thusly. Is that supposed to happen? It seems like this could easily be exploited by a vandal. They could upload an offensive image and still be able to use it even after it was deleted. kitty.pngPsycho Robot talkSilver bar.png 18:44, April 23, 2010 (UTC)

Hey Psycho, I know a bit about stuff like this, and while I can't answer your question completely, I can put a little light on it. First of all, after an image is deleted, the image itself remains on Wikia's servers for a while, in case someone wants to restore the file. That is what happened in this case, it looks like; the image was still in the database. I find that it takes a couple of months before that database is cleared. Beyond that though, there isn't much that you can do. Vandals, if they were really intent on having those images, could just upload them onto photobucket or another Wikia project, and use it that way. For example,
that is a Red LEGO Brick from Anyways, I hope that this shed some light on the situation. Just remember one thing; if we were so concerned about vandalism, then we wouldn't be doing this in the first place ;). You might also want to wait for Sannse/someone more knowledgeable than me's answer, 'cause I don't know everything. Ajraddatz Talk 19:43, April 23, 2010 (UTC)

Hummm... Aj is right that images are not deleted fully when they are deleted (which is why admins can restore them) but they shouldn't be usable. I'll see if I can find out what's going on here - sannse<staff /> (talk) 04:31, April 24, 2010 (UTC)

File history merge bug[edit source]

Hi, recently I came across two images covering the same subject, File:Cockatrice icon.png (current) and File:Cockatrice icon.PNG (obsolete). Since we as a community have decided to preserve contribution history wherever possible, instead of deleting the obsolete PNG version, I merged it with the current png version. The obsolete version had the following revisions:

 • 06:44, 1 September 2008
 • 22:22, 30 August 2008

and the current version had just one:

 • 01:34, 13 August 2009

When I merged the file histories, the revisions came up in this order:

 • 06:44, 1 September 2008
 • 01:34, 13 August 2009
 • 22:22, 30 August 2008

I'm no horologist, but I'm pretty sure 2009 comes after 2008! I've encountered this problem before, however, and deleting and undeleting the file page will put the revisions back in the correct order. So I did that, resulting in the history that you can see right now. This bug has been annoying me over the past few days, and I figured you should know about it if you don't already know. In case you need to know the exact steps I took, they are:

 1. Moved File:Cockatrice icon.PNG to File:Cockatrice icon.png, creation of redirect suppressed
 2. Confirmed that I wish to delete the existing File:Cockatrice icon.png
 3. Undeleted all deleted revisions of File:Cockatrice icon.png, this is where I was confronted with the out-of-order revisions explained above
 4. Deleted all revisions of File:Cockatrice icon.png
 5. Undeleted all revisions of File:Cockatrice icon.png, resulting in the revisions appearing in the correct order

If you could pass this along to the techies or anything like that, I'd appreciate it. Thanks, kitty.pngPsycho Robot talkSilver bar.png 02:15, July 2, 2010 (UTC)

More namespaces[edit source]

Hi Sannse,

Is it possible to have the namespace count (22) increased to, say, 24? We have a need, or at least a use, for another namespace for our Charm data. I've noticed that some other wikis have more namespaces, so would it be possible to do the same here? While another namespace is not necessarily essential, it would be very helpful and would bypass many of the issues we're facing as we try to implement our new and improved charm logs. If that is not possible, could we remove some of the little-used namespaces (such as Exchange talk or Forum talk), or do they have to be in pairs? This is not exactly a request for more namespaces, because we'd need to discuss it on our forums.

Thank you,

ʞooɔ 00:44, September 26, 2010 (UTC)

Yes, it's possible to add some extras. They do come in pairs (for wikis with talk pages rather than comments) but we don't need to remove any to add more. Once the community agrees, just let us know via Special:Contact and we'll look at adding them -- Sannse 03:31, October 1, 2010 (UTC)

Image Attribution and Wiki Independence[edit source]

Hi Sannse,

I'd like to add a few more thoughts about our conversation in the IRC the other day dealing with the new Oasis theme. In it, one of your main points was that we (the community of the wiki) won't always make the best decisions for our editors, and therefore Wikia must step in to make them for us. Hence, we are not allowed to remove things like image attribution.

However, this is at-odds with statements made by Wikia staff before. For an example, see this quote written by you. In it, you said "I comes down to 'your wiki, your choice'." (I assume what you meant to say was "It comes down..." instead of "I comes down..."). Another example was an email sent by Uberfuzzy to Azaz129, one of our bureaucrats. It can be found here. Uberfuzzy said that "a large stable community can exist and be fairly self sufficient at Wikia, with little need from staff/helper intervention", and that the RuneScape Wiki was "a shining example of [Wikia's] dream".

Such statements promote the independence of wikis and our ability (especially a large, active wiki such as this) to make our own choices. Why has the open atmosphere shifted so much from then to now? How much have the priorities at Wikia changed?

Thanks for your time,

--LiquidTalk 23:03, October 19, 2010 (UTC)

Hi Liquidhelium, I don't think that the priorities have changed, we still want every wiki on Wikia to be a success, and for the communities (both local and global) to grow and thrive.
We have been worried for a while about some wikis removing features. Mostly because this is often done by admins who don't like a feature, without them realizing that it is something that "the silent majority" might use.
A good example is the activity feed (which is on MyHome in Monaco). I've seen wikis that removed this, and I've also heard users say that this is the most important page on the wiki for them. Older users may prefer Recent Changes, which is obviously better for experienced users, but a newer user may get more involved because of the simple "one glance" feed that shows them key activity.
So what we are trying to do is to identify the key features and say "these must be available". If someone were to ask to remove the edit button and to get everyone to edit by adjusting the URL (to give a bit of a silly example), we would obviously say "no". The overall framework is one of the factors we see as important, which is why we are asking people to keep their customization to the content area (tables, infoboxes, whatever) and to the general theme of the wiki.
Image attribution is a new feature, and we don't yet know if it will be one of those that's a key to helping wikis grow or not. The idea of this feature is to help in some problems we've identified with new users realizing there is a community behind the content, and that they can join and edit. So the intention is to try it on all wikis, and find out exactly how well it works. We will definitely be watching to see the future of this and all the new and changed elements of the skin.
We definitely don't want to take away from the independence of this wiki, I totally agree with Uberfuzzy that it's a shining example of a wiki community. What we want to do is to do our part in providing that community with a platform that helps bring them new members, and helps them build the wiki.
I hope that helps -- Sannse<staff /> (help forum | blog) 01:57, October 20, 2010 (UTC)

Merge log[edit source]

(I know you might say use Special:Contact, but I like somethings where more people can see them) I was wondering what this was, and to my knowledge wasn't always there (or I'm just metaphorically blind) and why it has nothing in it. I know Special:MergeHistory is the page needed to log actions, but it seems to last be checked 14 months ago. So I am pondering whether this is an outdated log and special page (since ?action=delete and Special:MovePage can do the same to a similar effect), and why have a special page that no one can access? Thanks. Ryan PM 01:54, October 22, 2010 (UTC)
