GE bot[edit source]

Hey, Cook Me Plox and I have been talking about replacing the GE chart images with an actual interactive chart. I've made a demo at [[w:c:Joeytje50:GE chart]], and if you click edit, you'll see that the chart uses data in the form of UNIXTIMESTAMP:PRICE,\n for each dot on the chart (price without commas). I was wondering if you could make your bot put the data it gets from the page history on Exchange:ITEM/Data, using the same format as the demo page. This is something I am just asking now, if you are able and available to do that. I will make a YG thread about the charts before the bot should be actually ran, so this is something that is not needed at this moment, but for after the thread. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 14:25, September 13, 2012 (UTC)

I'll add a line for the 30-day max and min, and make them dashed like in the current graphs. For the maintaining of the pages, I will change the button on the Exchange: pages to make it change both the current price, and add the price to the /Data page, and I'll ask the people who run GE bots if they can make their bot add to the /Data pages too. So, after the first run creating all the /Data pages, the other bots will handle the updating. For the Index and Volume charts, could you please explain how they work? If it is possible to get a list of data for those 2 graphs, I could easily generate a graph for them. For the volume charts, I can even use the same graph type you use, just changing to this type. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 14:41, September 14, 2012 (UTC)
I tried figuring out how the indexes work, but I still don't really get it after reading those pages. Could you give me an example of how you make an index with the actual prices of the items, so I can see what you're doing to understand it? Raw data[edit source]

!!! Yay! This is awesome, and now most of the pieces are in place for us to have kick-ass graphs. And I think this may have originally been my idea, but Joey's been the one working on it and developing it for a while. ʞooɔ 02:48, September 27, 2012 (UTC)

re:GE data[edit source]

This is what I think:

  1. Yes. The script will be loaded on all pages that have the required elements on them. Just transcluding /Data pages will show the graphs. Maybe {{Exchange:Test|view=chart}} can be made to render it.
  2. To resize it, you need to change the min-width style to width, else it will follow the min-width rule, by being atleast that big (so bigger). For example <div id="chart" style="height: 500px; width: 500px"></div> will make it 500x500px. The elements around the chart itself create a margin of 160px high (80px high without the scrollbar) and 165px wide around the chart. So, to make the chart itself 100x100px it should be in a ~260x260px container.
  3. I think that would be possible. I could easily make a template that would work like the Exchange: pages, but for the data pages, with a simple first parameter for all data.
  4. For the volume charts, I could either make the volumes appear in the same chart as the exchange price, or make the volumes have their own chart below the prices chart. I personally think separating it into 2 charts would be best, because merging them might make the charts very unclear if the volumes differ a lot from the prices. For example a volume of 120 (million), and a price of 2800, would make the chart stretch from 100 through 3000 which would make the chart hard to read.
  5. That would be done in the data template. Putting all /Data pages in the "GEMW data pages" category would be enough. Like the chart images, I don't think the data pages need a very detailed category system.

For the index data pages, would that just be a matter of putting the value Template:GE Common Trade Index and all other index templates onto the page, with the unix timestamp? If so, it shouldn't be too hard getting that to work. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 16:35, September 27, 2012 (UTC)

I could make that syntax work, yeah. For merging the two, I don't think that's possible with these charts. They'll have to be split into a seperate chart. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 08:11, September 28, 2012 (UTC)
For the charts to show on this wiki you'll need to put this code on your Special:MyPage/skin.js. Because the script is still being developed, and the chance for errors to appear every now and then, it's best not to put the script in the sitewide scripts. I'm currently working on a popup for smaller charts (example), and the volumes. For the volume charts, I couldn't find that thing you did anywhere on the api ( but I checked the demo gallery, and saw the thing. I'll try adding that to the script. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 12:42, September 28, 2012 (UTC)
PS: that seems to be good for the maximum and minimum line you suggested before. I'll add that too. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 12:59, September 28, 2012 (UTC)
I can't find anything in the demos nor the api that allows you to change the line of the GE price (the basic line through the graph). The only adjustable things about that seems to be the color and the type. And for point 4, what marker do you mean, and in which direction should it move? Changing yAxis.offset would move the left y axis away from the graph (like this) which doesn't look good in my opinion. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 15:01, September 28, 2012 (UTC)
Could I see the code of that? I still can't find the way to make the lines thicker. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 15:18, September 28, 2012 (UTC)
I moved the script over to [[MediaWiki:Common.js/GECharts.js]].
Do you have any ideas on how to make it clearer where the price chart stops, and where the volume chart starts? another grid line color? The yAxis.lineWidth made the space between the charts clearer, but without it, it's harder to see. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 15:43, September 28, 2012 (UTC)
By the way, the volumes on the page are in millions right? So then the value should be *1000000 on the chart right? JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 15:53, September 28, 2012 (UTC)
Could you generate another /Data page for another item please? I get errors when I try to add "Test" as another item, for some reason, so I want to see if the cause of that error is the graphs being of the same item (which is easy to fix) or if it's because of something else, which would mean I'd have to put on my hardcore debug goggles JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 20:52, September 28, 2012 (UTC)
reset 1) done; 2) I don't think it is possible to move around the legend when the lines would be at the same height. Just moving it down doesn't work either, I think. I don't think there's a good way to make the lines clog the chart up less. Maybe if the labels were removed completely, and the lines would be 1px wide, it would look better, but then the lines would not be clear on where the maximum and minimum is anyway. I've removed the ability to change the size, and there is now only 500px high, full width (100% relative to container, just change the width of the parent element to resize) for normal, and the 200x230 size for small. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 16:31, October 3, 2012 (UTC)
I made the box disappear when another item is added, but not when an average is added.
For uploading the data, I think we should start the YG thread first. Cook and I are writing our parts of the proposal today, so later today the thread will likely be on the YG. After it's clear people support it (although I doubt they won't), the /Data pages can be created. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 13:45, October 5, 2012 (UTC)
1) fixed; 2) I don't think that's a big problem. I think it's because the length of the names in the legend are different, so it shifts a bit; 3) fixed; 4) That problem seems to get fixed when you move the chart around a bit after that. I think it's too minor to worry about. It only happens with the volume chart, and since there are not many items with volume data, that's not a big problem. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 15:14, October 7, 2012 (UTC)
Oh I'm sorry, I forgot about your message because I wanted to look at it later, because I checked my talk when I was a bit busy. Anyway, I removed the this. from it, because I wanted to try somthing to make the volume chart y-axis work better. After trying that, I just forgot to put it back.
I've formatted the numbers in the price info box in the pop up. I don't think it's bad that it has some of the same features as the GEDB, because I think it's not really their idea in the first place anyway. I think it's a common way of showing price history, and it's useful to have that with the box. Also, I think a lot of other GE track sites use the same thing. Forum:GEMH graphs[edit source]

You can upload the graph data now if you want. Everything is ready to be installed when you've completed uploading it all. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 13:15, November 15, 2012 (UTC)

They will be used on the items' Exchange: page, and on the item infobox. Do you know any other place the graphs are used? JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 14:39, November 15, 2012 (UTC)
It is very hard to fix. If you've found a fix on the forums, I'd LOVE to see it, because if there's not an easy fix, it will mean I'd have to revamp the whole script, basically. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 18:02, November 15, 2012 (UTC)
Yeah that is basically why I said it was very hard to fix. All of the additional features would need to be changed, since you need to be able to access the correct chart at the right moment. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 13:25, November 16, 2012 (UTC)
I know you put alot of effort into this, but just a thought: can we just put a normal link below the small chart directing the user to the Data subpage? Then, we don't need the popup. People can just open it in another tab and close it when they're done...   az talk   03:53, November 18, 2012 (UTC)
I only see this now that I've finished, but no then the forms to add more chart items would still be broken. Anyway, it all works now, and now I just need some people who try to mess with the charts trying to find some bugs I haven't found yet. I've made it possible to hotlink to the items you've added, Exchange:Plank/Data#i=Oak plank,Teak plank,Mahogany plank,Limestone brick#z=6#a=50, which only works for the /Data pages, and you can also hotlink to the selected zoom level and input average used on the charts, which works on all charts User:Joeytje50/Sandbox 2#z=5#a=60 (of course the small charts still won't use the #a= because they don't use average lines. Also, changing properties in the chart, such as adding items on the /Data pages will automatically add that item to the url, and changing averages will automatically change that to the url too. Could you see if you can find any remaining bugs in the script? If there are no bugs left now, I think the script is ready to go. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 12:58, November 20, 2012 (UTC)
Okay I've fixed those things. I've got 1 more question now: what is going to happen with the volumes? Currently none of the GE bots are able to update the volumes every day. Because of that, the volumes on the charts will soon be outdated, and the newer volumes won't be recorded. Will you be continuing to run your bot for the volume data, or could you possibly help the owners of the bots now to make it possible for their bots to get the volume data? JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 11:27, November 21, 2012 (UTC)
That would be nice. I'll also try to write a script that would be able to do the same. Could you tell me which of the values is used to get the volume from? It's the Total trade count column right? If that value would be added to the GE data pages every GE update, would that work the same as it does with the current data? JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 11:27, November 22, 2012 (UTC)
reset What I meant was, if the Total trade count column's values would be added to their articles every GE updates, would the volume charts work exactly like they do now? but I guess you already answered that. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 12:49, November 22, 2012 (UTC)
Oh and are we just going to keep Weeds and Ingredients as images, or are those going to be /Data pages for nonexistent Exchange pages? JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 18:29, November 22, 2012 (UTC)
Also, the index pages are not used on any pages but your bot's anymore, and the common trade index is only used on your userpages now. They can be deleted too I think. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 18:42, November 22, 2012 (UTC)
Hey, could you please upload those omitted data points you spoke about on the thread? Hardcoding it will be the best solution here. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 15:44, November 27, 2012 (UTC)
I think it's best to have every single recorded data there is on data pages. This is how the charts will continue to be used (the bot will always update the /Data page, even if the price didn't change), and it will make the popup chart on items like Cape work better, since it currently hops back and forth between the different items, because of the gaps. This is only for the gaps that are not between a change of price. For example, 10 January the price is 100, 20 January the price is 100, and 26 January the price is 104, then the days between 10 and 20 all get their data filled in, and the days between 20 and 26 January don't get any data filled in, other than the data that's recorded by the bot. This will make the tooltip work best. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 09:45, November 28, 2012 (UTC)
2) The script can handle it, but the mainspace /Data pages will lack the features of being able to be put in other charts via the form above the chart, and it will lack hotlinking. For that, they do need to be in the Exchange namespace. Also, the infoboxes don't support mainspace Data pages, but to fix that we could just put the chart outside the infobox.
3) done. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 11:03, November 29, 2012 (UTC)

Props on the GEMH charts![edit source]

This message is cross-posted to User talk:Joeytje50 and User talk:Azliq7. If I forgot to mention someone who was important to this implementation, please forward my message to them.

The charts are very useful now that each pixel isn't forced to be an entire week of data anymore. User-defined zoom and item comparison, as well as having some volume data on the same chart, are very cool features. I first saw these features on and liked them very much. Now the RuneScape Wiki takes the cake by being able to change the items and zoom without reloading the entire page, and without using Flash.

Seriously. Props. =D

Re: User:Nightgunner5[edit source]

When I try to open up the page on a browser, it won't retrieve the data. Although I tried with Java ( ) and Python ( ) and both were successful getting the data without any trouble, but they both go through the API, so that might be the difference. Hopefully that helps? I can access it with ?action=raw, but not ?action=edit. I can edit it from AWB if you need something fixing on it? cqm 00:53, 14 Dec 2012 (UTC) (UTC)
I got a response from Kirkburn. He can't access it either and has passed it along to the tech staff. Somewhat surprised how fast the response was, but at least it's being looked into. cqm 13:57, 14 Dec 2012 (UTC) (UTC)
Oddly, I can't save the edit in AWB either. AWB gives very little in terms of error messages in my experience, but I'll try and find someone who can use something else to attempt to edit it. cqm 16:43, 27 Dec 2012 (UTC) (UTC)
