Charm data[edit | edit source]

Hi, beautiful. I'd like to run through what I have planned in mind for converting charms into modules:

  • Stop using the Charm namespace and move all data to the Module namespace under 'Module:Charm log/<Monster>'
  • Replace all transclusions of charm pages with proper wrapper templates that will invoke Module:Charm log.
    • This will be the tough part. Just because of how tedious it is. Amaurice said he would have his bot move and convert all the charm namespace pages, but it'd probably be good of me help fix the Charm: transclusions (you can help too if you'd like).
  • Submissions do not work for charms with the modules, but I'm sure you can fix that. I've been using Template:Charm drops as a test. When I'm all ready to convert the pages, I'll redirect the page to Template:Charm data and use it for charm section headers on monster pages.
  • We'll need to write an abuse filter that doesn't allow users without the charmedit right to edit 'Module:Charm log/' pages.

I'm fairly certain I have everything ready for this change. I just need to give Amaurice some instructions on how exactly to do this (because if we're not on the exact same page for formatting, we'll be fucked) and then we can probably begin our updating. We may need to disable the script and put up a sitenotice while the change is ongoing. MolMan 17:58, June 15, 2014 (UTC)

You told me it doesn't work with regex, but those patterns are all in the library referenced on dev wiki. Yes, even the ^ matching the first line and $ matching the end.
And I plan to keep the submissions in the mainspace. MolMan 23:50, June 15, 2014 (UTC)

RE: Exchange pages[edit | edit source]

  1. Yes. Alchable is used in Template:ExcgTable and Template:ExcgDefault.
  2. To reduce the size of the template, since it is only displayed in the Exchange pages itself (ExcgDefault) and nowhere else.
    • It can be moved to the module page now, since AzBot needs to update the info simultaneously. If these parameters and the exchange info is kept separate, AzBot needs to update 2 different pages (Module:Exchange/Iron bar and Exchange:Iron bar).

A noob question: Why can't the Exchange info be put into the Exchange page itself?   az talk   22:28, June 28, 2014 (UTC)

re:Tabs[edit | edit source]

Just to write a full reply to your message...

Thanks for asking around, I hope it gets installed soon. For the tabberdropdown, I think most of it can be removed because of the long time nobody's used it.

And yes, the .tab {} thing was something I kept in there because I saw it worked, but I had no idea why. It was indeed because of the **// in the comment, which would make the next tag selector invalid since it had a / at its start.

The use of those tag ids is to increase the selector's specificity, but also to prevent the code from messing with the dropdowns at the top of the oasis page. I used some way too general class names for the dropdowns, and so did Wikia (their dropdowns also today still use the class .show which is - in hindsight - a way too broad class name to use), so the styles applied to their dropdowns too.

There is no documentation at all, no. What I think the best thing to do is just remove the majority of the whole thing, and keep the parts that are actually being used in the rest of the style files. I'll check what needs to be kept and what can go myself then, because of the lack of documentation. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 17:00, August 17, 2014 (UTC)

Speaking of which, the template should have a vardefine thingy like CitePodcast so that you can give the issue and it provides the title, issue and url. Let's steal more stuff from WP[edit | edit source]

Ya know how you want to remove navboxes from the mobile skin because of how huge they are? What about the stuff up top? I'm not sure if you've browsed WP on a mobile device, but when you come across those top-of-the-page templates, they are removed and replaced with "This page has some issues". Anyone who cares to see what those issues are can click those words and find the templates on their own separate page. This makes browsing on a phone much more convenient. We can't exactly just hide those templates as you plan to do with navboxes because they usually have important information (I'm thinking about templates like rare item, postbag, etc.). I'd love to be able to do exactly what WP does; however, I need to know if it's actually feasible. If you can actually write this script, that'd be awesome, and either you or I could write up a forum that everyone will nodoubtedly support. If you can't, is there anything else we could do? Or anyway we could get Wikia to help (if the reason is incompatibility, etc.)? MolMan 13:15, December 27, 2013 (UTC)

Common.js/geupdate,js[edit | edit source]

Note: This messages has also been posted to User talk:Joeytje50.

Hello Cam! User:Undamaged brought to our attention that the "Update price" button on the Exchange: pages were not providing the correct prices, as seen here. Assuming that the GE Graph API was being derpy again, we decided to check it against the in game GE. This lead to us finding that the thing was, in fact, pulling the incorrect data. However, checking the api directly, I found that it does have the correct price "1388102400000":31 for today. Confused, I figured I would check TyBot to ensure that it was still pulling the correct information, and it was. I am a complete novice at Javascript, so I was hoping you'd be able to look into this and fix it if possible. Thanks, svco4bY.png3Gf5N2F.png 17:05, December 27, 2013 (UTC)

And this one is also posted to User talk:TyA ;)
I've fixed the bug. The problem was that it was going through var i in pricelist, with i being a string of the name of the property of pricelist (if that makes any sense XD) which is not sorted by numerical value. That caused the last iteration of that loop not to be the actual most recent price (which it previously was though), so that was what broke it. I've fixed it to now look for the highest value for the UNIX timestamp on the json page. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 02:34, December 29, 2013 (UTC)

Category:Parser function errors[edit | edit source]

Hi. For some reason, the MW messages that add that category are transcluding it onto non-mainspace pages even though the messages are using Mainonly to add the category. This is fixed with a null edit to the page. I'm stumped as to why it works that way, honestly... I've been cleaning up this category with the necessary null edits myself, but I also just asked Az if he wouldn't mind having his bot take of the null-editing as a part of its daily routine. That's literally all I know about the problem except for when these messages appear, but I'm fairly certain you'll know once you see the messages, so I don't think I need to explain that to you. Is this something you can look into/fix? :ɔ MolMan 14:59, January 6, 2014 (UTC)

More or less correct. The only detail you got a little off is that not every page was added right away. The cache seems to be taking its sweet time with this and adds maybe 50 to 100 pages a day or so. I'm hoping and assuming that once a page has been null edited to clear the category that it will never pop up again, but I can't say for sure. MolMan 15:09, January 6, 2014 (UTC)

MolMan 17:41, January 8, 2014 (UTC)
Huh. It is working completely fine, but I haven't seen it actually being used by IPs... It works from both the monster page and the /Charm log page, so I have no idea why IPs have been been doing manual edits. I'll keep trying to find out why. Can we also set up an abuse filter to disallow non-autoconfirmed edits to charm log pages unless it's with the script? It's much more difficult to diagnosis vandalism when it's not done with the script. MolMan 17:53, January 8, 2014 (UTC)

If for any reason you don't want to work on it, is there anyone else who maybe would? On the otherhand, if it's something we simply can't support having on the wiki, do you have any possible alternatives? I do understand you dislike using js on the mobile skin, but this might be a worthwhile use of it. Switchinfobox[edit | edit source]

I'm trying to add a SwitchInfobox on my wiki( runescapefanfiction ) just like the one onthis wiki, but whenever I use the template, it displays all the items in the template rather than the item which is linked to the button that I click on and also the loading button doesn't dissapear after it has finished loading and a whole bunch of empty paragraphs appear out of nowhere, like on this page for example. I've used Matthew2602's javascript and css code for the switch infobox on my wiki(which is here(js) and here), I've also made sure that the script and css pages are imported using the importArticles method(which I don't really understand how to use) in the common.js page. I think for some reason javascript is not working on my wiki, or maybe I'm not importing the scripts properly on my wiki. Do you know how I can check to see if this really is the issue and how I can fix this?

So we shouldn't be using switch inline yet? I guess I can bug joey to fix it more. Also, can you still write some usage examples. Also, the inline will be able to change two different parameters at once, right? Map thumb and images overlapping text[edit | edit source]

Can you tell me why this crap was happening? You have to look at the differences without fullwidth. sssSp7p.pngIjLCqFF.png 04:31, January 30, 2014 (UTC)

It wasn't only that. The map was rendering underneath the text but on top of the drop boxes when I put it in the mapthumb template. I had it set to float to the right but it wouldn't go underneath the concept art image, it kept sitting to the left of it, therefore sitting to the left of it where all the drop logs were. It's in my first edit. sssSp7p.pngIjLCqFF.png 13:25, January 30, 2014 (UTC)

Re:warbandstimer.js[edit | edit source]

Okay so here's what's wrong:

  • My friend said it still counts upwards
  • It changes to a yellow background 10 mins before it starts (which is fine I guess but it stops the timer from moving)
  • The text doesn't change to "Active" to replace the countdown on the timer when warbands is happening
  • I think it pauses after and doesn't continue counting again until you refresh

Some js[edit | edit source]

What are your thoughts on using js to change a page's content based on URL parameters. There aren't a whole ton of places this could be useful, but I like the benefits of where it could be used.

The only thing I have in mind right now is British/American floor numbers. It'd be neat if we modified template:floor to have a link for American readers that would, say append something like ?variation=american and have template:floornumber change display accordingly. No, I'm not asking for spelling changes, just floor numbers. I can actually see floor numbers being cause of confusion.

I figured I'd ask about your thoughts on this instead of just asking it to be made. I know jackshit about js, so I'd rather get your input on the benefits/costs before getting my hopes up.

Also, do you have any idea what he floor classes in those templates are for? They seem useless unless there's something I'm missing. MolMan 02:09, February 4, 2014 (UTC)

A css gadget would be great actually. There's nothing wrong with the title, but if we can do better, why not try? MolMan 13:35, February 4, 2014 (UTC)

Template:Archive list[edit | edit source]

The problem, which I can't seem to find a way of bypassing, is that, for some reason, the parsing order was changed. The magic words aren't being converted to their variable until after the DPL tag reads it, screwing the whole thing up. I highly doubt it was a change by the DPL devs, but it could very well be the case. I used to use "Main" as the parameter for namespace, but that doesn't work anymore. Before recently, the extension would ignore most invalid parameters there and just default to the mainspace. The parsing order can be fixed in some cases by changing it to the parser tag (like you tried); however, this doesn't look like it could ever bode well with the complex titlematch used in the template. Aside: I really wish I could change it to regex, to be something like /\/Archive_[0-9]+/, cleaning up that /Archive%0/Archive%9 shit, but, again, that damned parsing order. The best order of business would be getting Wikia or DPL (whoever may be responsible) to revert this change. I was actually going to do it myself today, unless you want to be the one to harass them. MolMan 14:14, February 8, 2014 (UTC)

That makes no fucking sense, it always worked. Why doesn't it work now, then? MolMan 00:05, February 9, 2014 (UTC)
Dammit. Well, as pissed as I am, I think I found the fix. I was worried about the titlematch because I require | for two things in there: parser functions and logical or. I did some experimenting, and it looks like I can use a regular bar (|) for the parser functions and a split bar (¦) for the or without confusing either the titlematch or the #dpl tag itself. This better work. I hate the old archive list. On the bright side, with the tag, I can use actual parameters now, instead of hacking them in there by defining variables first. MolMan 00:21, February 9, 2014 (UTC)
I think that takes care of it... If you find any problems, tell me. But, please, don't find any problems. MolMan 00:29, February 9, 2014 (UTC)
Cool, I was able to make it regex :D. I only just remembered that titleregexp is stupid and doesn't interpret spaces as underscores. Using PAGENAMEE seems to let me regex. Again, tell me if anything breaks, but please don't find anything that breaks ;-; MolMan 23:27, February 9, 2014 (UTC)

Wikia.css[edit | edit source]

Hi Cam,  I know this isn't really what you do but can you help me figure out why my wikia.css isn't working?  I kept it really simple, all I want to do is to change the background.

If you can't help or don't have time maybe you can direct me to someone who can?  Thanks, Mike111b (talk) 05:59, March 1, 2014 (UTC)

Thank you Cam :D It works!!! One question it possible to make it so that it doesn't move when i scroll up and down?  Right now it just repeats with the length of the page, and i would like it to stay static just like the wiki default image.  I'm probably possible but I have no idea how. BOT[edit | edit source]

Any important page that is subject to change and relies on DPL. Pages like RS:AD, RuneScape:Orphanage/Disambiguation pages, and Money making guide are all pages that could use a daily null edit. You may be thinking to tell me to use ?action=purge, but this forces a cache only on the user's side, a null edit forces it for everyone, which is what I want. Another, is every page in Category:Parser function errors. Az sorta agreed to do that, but he never actually did... MolMan 12:46, March 13, 2014 (UTC)

i only agreed to do it for a few days, and did it... i quote myself: It's a temporary thing... so it will do it for several days and we'll see how it goes.   az talk   12:54, March 14, 2014 (UTC)
well, most pages kept re-appearing in that category, disproving my earlier theory that we only need to update the pages once. and the pages in that category seemed random, those which are not even visited at all, like old user pages. the best solution for this would be to actually fix the parser errors, instead of null editing the pages... which seemed pointless to me. thats why i decided to stop doing it.   az talk   23:25, March 14, 2014 (UTC)

The AzBot and TyBots are the main ones that update the Exchange prices. The AmauriceBot is only backup in case of failure of the other bots. I can update AmauriceBot once the others are okay with the changes, and if necessary, I can disable the AmauriceBot Exchange update until the switch over is complete, then update the code. LUA Modules[edit | edit source]

The Module pages seem to have the funny effect of still trying to parse the code as wiki pages: Template:Addcommas and File:Coins - .. img .. -.png... IP83.101.44.209 (talk) 19:06, June 12, 2014 (UTC)

Ummm whenever you get coins working. This is just a reminder for you to do something with Template:Rusty coins too. (you can probably just add another variable for this for the invocation. MolMan 21:01, June 12, 2014 (UTC)
I'm having some difficulty reading and understanding all of the LUA stuff; so I won't be touching it. But Module:Tnavbar needs to be changed to take into account that the second parameter may include a fully specified wiki space name (e.g. "User:"), and not just start with a ":" when adding "Template:" in front of it. I believe this is a change around the following lines:
    if mw.ustring.sub( args[1], 1, 1 ) ~= ':' then
        viewLink = 'Template:' .. args[1]
(Specifically for cases like User:Everystat13/Navbar.) IP83.101.44.209 (talk) 06:04, June 14, 2014 (UTC)
Looks like I can't edit them anyhow; while you're at it, add a "nowiki" at the top of Module:Tnavbar as well; causing a red link atm. IP83.101.44.209 (talk) 06:07, June 14, 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for the fix. I suppose looking up a manual/reference for LUA would be a smart thing to do; but some part of me expects decent programming languages to be interpretable without first reading into the specifics of that language...
I never paid attention to the discuss/edit links of non-standard navboxes, but edit links like "" are a little bit silly; no chance we could fix that now that the template is being worked on anyhow? (Whether or not we want to fix this now, I believe the current LUA version is missing a ":" for the Edit link.) Some random fiddling attempt:
    local viewLink, talkLink, editLink = args[1], args[1], args[1]
    if mw.ustring.match( args[1], ':' ) ~= ':' then
        viewLink = 'Template:' .. args[1]
        talkLink = 'Template talk:' .. args[1]
        editLink = 'Template:' .. args[1]
        :wikitext( prepText )
        :wikitext(  .. tostring( viewSpan ) ..  )
    if not( yesno( args.miniv ) or yesno( args.viewplain ) ) then
        local frame = mw.getCurrentFrame()
            :wikitext( ' ' )
            :tag( 'span' )
                :css( 'font-size', '80%' )
                :wikitext( '•' )
            :wikitext( ' ' )
            :wikitext( '[' .. frame:preprocess(  ) .. ' ' .. tostring( talkSpan ) .. ']' )
            :wikitext( ' ' )
            :tag( 'span' )
                :css( 'font-size', '80%' )
                :wikitext( '•' )
            :wikitext( ' ' )
            :wikitext( '[' .. frame:preprocess(  ) .. ' ' .. tostring( editSpan ) .. ']' )
IP83.101.44.209 (talk) 09:01, June 14, 2014 (UTC)
Apparently there is no shorthand-if in LUA by default; too bad. But in pseudocode (Java based, blame me :P ), couldn't we do (for the talk link):
if (args[1].contains(":")) {
    String[] split = args[1].split(":");
    if (split[0].isEmpty()) {
        // Main namespace
        talkLink = "Talk:" + split[1];
    } else {
        talkLink = split[0] + " talk:" + split[1];
} else {
    viewLink = "Template:" + viewLink;
    talkLink = "Template talk:" + talkLink;
    editLink = "Template:" + editLink;
Yes, I am assuming a colon can only ever be used in page names for separating the namespace from the actual page name; perhaps this assumption is incorrect. And I don't know how easy string manipulations are in LUA. IP83.101.44.209 (talk) 14:42, June 14, 2014 (UTC)
Nice! Great :D . Thanks, IP83.101.44.209 (talk) 15:59, June 29, 2014 (UTC)

Looks like the new LUA modules are certainly keeping your hands full. The example from your scrapbook could make the huge templates more readable, but how often does anyone really check the source code?
