DynamicPageList (also known as DPL) is the most powerful, useful, and simply best MediaWiki extension ever made. It allows users to generate reports based on parameters that they set. It is considered by many to be the "swiss army knife" of extensions, because it can do anything. It can make lists. It can tabulate data. It grants you three wishes.

While DPL's syntax can get incredibly complicated (and the results as well), you can start off quite simply. Here's we'll have a bit of a primer, slowly ramping up the complexity.

The version of DPL run on Wikia is v1.6.4.

The Basics[edit | edit source]

DPL functions by using the <DPL> tag. (It also can use the {{#dpl: parser function, but more on that later.) For all DPL queries, you can use the following format:

<DPL>
parameter1 = data1
parameter2 = data2
...
</DPL>

You can control how your query looks and what results are given by the following:

  • Criteria for page selection
  • Output format
  • Output order
  • Output volume

Criteria for page selection[edit | edit source]

This is undoubtedly the most important part of DPL; without it you wouldn't be able to make any lists! There are 58(!) different parameters that select pages, but we'll only worry about a few for now.

Selection based on categories[edit | edit source]

category[edit | edit source]

Gives all the pages in a certain category.

Multiple categories can be specified as or by using a pipe or an ampersand.

notcategory[edit | edit source]

Excludes all pages in a certain category. Works best when used with other parameters.

categoriesminmax[edit | edit source]

Restricts search to pages that are assigned to between a minimum or a maximum of categories. You can also use only minumum or maximum. Syntax: categoriesminmax = [min],[max]
