This transcript involves dialogue with Skaldrun and the player.

Unfreezing him in the Frozen floors[edit | edit source]

Before unfreezing him[edit | edit source]

  • There appears to be someone trapped in ice.
    • Light a fire next to him
    • Cast a fire spell on the ice
      • Which spell will you cast?
        • If the player is at least level 13 Magic:
        • If the player is at least level 35 Magic:
        • If the player is at least level 59 Magic:
    • Do nothing

First time after unfreezing him[edit | edit source]

  • Player has freed Skaldrun from his frozen prison.
  • Hooded man: ...What chapter is this? What story?... Am I...am I free? My home has been in that ice for so long! How can I reward you? I have so little to offer as a reward. Perhaps I can offer my skills as a storyteller... Yes, that is what I shall do. I shall let you into my stories, whenever you want, as often as you want. It's the least I can do.

  • Hooded man: Shall I return to the surface now, or is there more you would like to ask?

      • Skaldrun teleports away.
    • There's more I'd like to ask you.

        • Who are you?
          • Player: Who are you?
          • Hooded man: That is the question. I'm Player... No, wrong story, that's your name not mine. Perhaps my name is Ozan...do I look like an Ozan? No, those aren't my names. I'm sorry, Player, but I don't quite know who I am.
          • Player: But how did you know my name? We've only just met.
          • Hooded man: Oh, I knew your name as soon as your stories flooded the shelves.
          • Player: Shelves? Stories?
          • Hooded man: The library of my mind; each book a story, each story someone's life, each life full of hopes and dreams. When you came close, your books filled a whole bookcase; each story filled with adventure and potential.
          • Player: Riiight. Yet, you don't know who you are?
          • Hooded man: No. The library is empty of my stories, it seems. I know that I am a teller of tales and a keeper of stories. But beyond that I do not know.
          • (Shows initial options)
        • You're going to tell me stories?
          • Player: So you're going to tell me stories?
          • Hooded man: Tell you? No, no, I will do so much more than tell you. I will show you my stories, let you be a part of them, live someone else's life for a while. Just come find me on the surface outside of these demon halls, and I will be able to explain it better. These dungeons are too dangerous for me to go into great detail.
          • (Shows initial options)
        • What are these stories you talk about?
          • Player: What are these stories you talk about?
          • Hooded man: I know all the stories that have taken place within Daemonheim: every grand adventure, every tragic romance... I know them, and in turn I have lived them.
          • Hooded man: They are all catalogued safely in my mind's library, to be read at a moment's notice.
          • Player: So, you can tell me what's at the bottom of Daemonheim?
          • Hooded man: And ruin the adventure for you? Spoilers, dear boy, spoilers.
          • Player: Could you at least tell me these stories?
          • Hooded man: I would love to. But not here. The dungeons are too dangerous for idle storytelling. Now that I am free from my frost prison, I can meet you on the surface. Come to me there and I will tell you such tales. At least, I will if you can jog my memory. Find story elements while in Daemonheim and I will happily relate the associated saga to you on the surface.

        • Why were you frozen in ice?
          • Player: Why were you frozen in ice?
          • Hooded man: I honestly cannot remember. Perhaps it was a cave-in, a flash flood perhaps. But then again, I vaguely remember laughter...haunting laughter. Hmmm, was it really laughter, or something my paranoid mind conjured up?
          • Player: How long have you been frozen down here?
          • Hooded man: What Age is this?
          • Player: It's the 6th Age.
          • Hooded man: Oh... In that case, I've been down here for a long time indeed. It may even be centuries.

        • Goodbye
          • Player: Goodbye.
          • Hooded man: Yes, farewell for now, my friend. I will wait for you on the surface, near a nice warm fire if there is one. Find story elements here in Daemonheim and visit me with them. They will unlock stories that you will scantly believe.

At the Daemonheim camp[edit | edit source]

Standard dialogue[edit | edit source]

  • Skaldrun: Greetings, Player. It's so nice to see you again! Have you come to hear a story?
  • Select an option
    • Yes, tell me a story.
      • Player: Yes, tell me a story.
      • If the player has not discovered any memory items:
        • Skaldrun: Ah, but you are yet to discover any items in Daemonheim that will jog my memory. I am truly sorry.
      • If the player has discovered a memory item:
        • Skaldrun: Which story would you like to hear?
          • (Choose a Story interface opens)
            • Play saga
              • If the player is carrying items:
                • Skaldrun: I'm sorry my friend, but you need to clear your inventory before I can tell that story.
                • Skaldrun cannot tell you a story while you are burdened with material possessions.
                • You must bank all of the items you are wearing and carrying.
                • (Bank deposit box interface opens.)
              • Unknown condition:
                • Skaldrun: I'm sorry my friend, but I don't yet remember that story.
              • If the player is not carrying any items:

    • How do these sagas work, exactly?
      • Player: How do these sagas work, exactly?
      • Skaldrun: I can take you inside these sagas. There you become the hero of that saga: taking on their form, their mannerisms, their strengths and their weaknesses. You live through their story and control their destiny. Their choices will be yours, and their actions will be your actions.
      • Player: So, I'll gain experience by becoming them?
      • Skaldrun: In a manner of speaking. You will not gain anything while I relate the saga to you, but there is experience to be gained if you complete it - so long as you have not done so already. Once you have completed a saga, I will present you with a book containing its secrets, and this will improve your knowledge in certain areas. You can get two books per saga: one for completing the abridged version of a saga and another for completing 100% of the unabridged version. You must be skilled enough to hear my unabridged sagas, while no skills are required to hear the abridged version. Get to the end of an abridged or unabridged saga and you will gain a small reward; complete all of the secondary objectives in an unabridged saga and you will receive the full rewards.
      • Player: Can you just tell me these sagas straight away?
      • Skaldrun: I'm sorry, no. My memory is a mess of uncatalogued stories, so you'll need to jog my memory before I can tell you a saga. There will be reminders throughout the dungeons of Daemonheim: fragments of my memory that have taken physical form. If you can find these, then I'll be able to tell you a new saga.
      • Player: Can I fail a saga?
      • Skaldrun: Yes, I'm afraid so. If you lead your protagonist to destruction, or otherwise damage the fundamental elements of the saga, the story will unravel and you will return here. But do not despair: if you reach certain points in a saga and fail, you will be able to return to that point and continue.
      • Player: Is there anything else I should know?
      • Skaldrun: Each story is different and has its own nuances and twists. Be sure to read their special rules so that you can understand what is required of you. I will provide all this information when you come to choose a saga to play.

    • I just came to chat.
      • Player: I've just come to chat.
      • Skaldrun: Chat? It's been so long since I've had a simple conversation! What would you like to talk about?

        • What can you tell me about yourself?
          • Player: What can you tell me about yourself?
          • Skaldrun: It's clear that I am a keeper of stories and a teller of tales.
          • Player: Can you tele anything about yourself other than that?
          • Skaldrun: I'm not sure there is anything beyond stories any more. I remember small fragments...but I'm not sure they are even my fragments. There are small moments from a childhood: growing up in a settlement named after a hero. I remember chronicling life in Daemonheim for someone. A man, perhaps? I can almost remember a name - almost - but every time I get close to remembering it, it runs away, mocking.

              • Player: How does that make you feel?
              • Skaldrun: I'm not sure. Part of me wonders if I lost my memories on purpose, hiding from who I was. Could I have been so terrible that even I wished to forget myself?
              • Player: Do you remember being a horrible person?
              • Skaldrun: No...but then I don't remember being a nice person either.

            • Aren't you called Skaldrun?
            • Is there any way I can help you remember?
              • Player: Is there any way I can help you remember?
              • Skaldrun: Perhaps. I no doubt wandered the depths of Daemonheim, so there is a chance I left something behind. As you go about the dungeons, keep an eye open for things of interest; if they're not mine then they may at least remind me of a story.

        • How long were you frozen in that block of ice?
          • Player: How long were you frozen in that block of ice?
          • Skaldrun: Centuries. I was frozen well before the current Age.
          • Player: What? You're centuries old?
          • Skaldrun: Oh yes, possibly older. I don't remember.
          • Player: How did it feel, being frozen in ice for so long?
          • Skaldrun: How do you think it felt? It was torture. Imagine staring at the same spot for centuries, never blinking, never moving, never able to look away. Imagine that spot never changed. I went mad, just as anyone would in my situation. Complete insanity. It was a welcome relief, a break from the endless tedium of that single vision. But, soon enough, I became bored of the madness. Even my wayward mind couldn't save me from the banality of my situation. So, I turned to stories and let them grow, let them take me over for a while. They freed me. They took me away from my situation and let me experience amazing adventures. During those stories, I found a way to become part of the tale, to be the protagonist. It was amazing and liberating. Until you freed me, I spent my time in those stories, living their lives. The magic of my curse served to attract more stories as they occured[sic] around me, giving me a limitless supply of tales and adventures.
          • Player: How did you end up trapped in the first place?
          • Skaldrun: I don't remember. I think it was an accident, a cave-in perhaps, but I'm not sure. I half-remember laughter, but that is either real or a figment of a tortured mind. I cannot say.

        • How do these stories work?
          • Player: How do these stories work?
          • Skaldrun: They began as merely words and memories: tales to recall and little else. But stories have a magic of their own, and I learned to isolate and grow that magic to the degree that I was drawn into them, body and soul. I was able to live within the stories. While I couldn't change their beginnings or ends, I could influence how the story played out. All stories are like that to me, and I can step into them as easily as you could step into a room. I feel that I could take you with me. You could step into my stories and live them, just as I can.
          • Player: How do you remember all of these stories?
          • Skaldrun: Imagine a library, a great building with books from wall to wall; a veritable labyrinth of literature with each book acting as a piece of history, someone's adventures, someone's life. I wander that library in my head.
          • Player: So, you have books on everyone?
          • Skaldrun: Oh, some people have a single, thin book. Yet, you have an entire bookcase dedicated to your adventures: some tomes written and others empty, awaiting ink. The only books I cannot find are my own.

            • So, how does your curse work?
              • Player: So, how does this curse work?
              • Skaldrun: I have glimpses of my past, a past where I chronicled life in the depths of Daemonheim. I remember a collection of journals, of them being torn apart and scattered across the dungeon. I recall being told that the journals weren't safe, that anyone could get their hands on them, and that I would be a more suitable receptacle for the information... To ensure the information could be readily accessed, I was granted a mockery of immortality: a body that would neither age nor crumble over the aeons, a body without a heartbeat, stripped o life to fuel this perpetual existence. Then I was given the second part of my 'gift'. My mind would become a journal for everything that happened within Daemonheim, storing everything within those dungeons as a library in my mind. That's all I remember of the curse. I know that the curse forced me to forget who I was. There was no room in my head for unimportant things like memories of self. But, although I had become forgotten, the curse became a gift, and the stories saved me from a fate I would not wish on anyone.

              • Player: How are you enjoying life on the surface?
              • Skaldrun: Oh, it's fantastic. The Fremennik are so interesting; so noble and brave, and those that guard the dungeons are doubly so. At campfires, I've been telling them stories of their ancestors, and they seem to rather enjoy them. So, yes, I'm very happy here. Thank you so much, Player.

      • Skaldrun: Ah, yes, that skin. It belonged to an animal, which, in turn, belonged to a cruel and malevolent individual. But he is not the hero of the story. No, there are three heroes in this tale, each working side by side. Perhaps you'd like to hear more?

      • Skaldrun: Few emotions can be as overpowering as the thirst for retribution, and fewer still can be so destructive to others and, ultimately, ourselves.
