Cutscene[edit | edit source]

  • Gorvek: I was there, in the year of Croesus. The year the fungus killed fifty thousand people, and the Tenth Legion were annihilated.
  • Gorvek: It was the Second Age, not long after the end of the Kharidian Campaign.
  • Gorvek: An expedition returned from the Unquiet Ocean with a very unusual species of fungus.
  • Gorvek: The fools thought they could turn it into a weapon. A botanical plague they could unleash on the enemies of the Empire.
  • Gorvek: They called it Croesus. Its spores infested the bodies of the dead, spreading and growing.
  • Gorvek: They fed it slaves, tested it, burned away weakness, forced it to evolve. They did their jobs far too well.
  • Gorvek: After one serious breach, they were ordered to cease their work. They didn't.
  • Gorvek: Inevitably, Croesus broke free into the city again, choking the streets with its putrescent growth.
  • Gorvek: Nothing could stop it. Priests and guards alike were powerless, and their bodies only served to fuel its flourishing.
  • Gorvek: I was with the Tenth Legion when we were recalled from the border to combat the infestation.
  • Gorvek: After days of fighting, my wings ached and my dragonfire was spent.
  • Gorvek: We razed miles of city to contain it. The Legion were almost completely wiped out. It still wasn't enough.
  • Gorvek: In the end Lord Zaros was forced to intervene personally. He *quarantined* this whole district - simply buried it beneath the earth.
  • Gorvek: I thought the remains of Croesus were destroyed. They assured me they were destroyed!
  • Gorvek: They say that of all the Elder Gods, Bik holds intelligent life in the greatest contempt.
  • Gorvek: She must have found Croesus beneath the graveyard and revived it. Even now it feeds on the ancient dead.
  • Gorvek: It's already massacred every defender on this front. If we don't drive it back, it will tear the cathedral to pieces.

Talking to Gorvek[edit | edit source]

In the western Croesus Front[edit | edit source]

  • Select an option
    • Can you aid me on the battlefield?
      • Player: Can you aid me against the forces breaching the city?
      • (If the Dragonfire rain battlefield ability is not active:)
      • Select an option
        • Attune your ability to Gorvek's.
            • You've set your battlefield ability to Dragonfire rain.
Call in support from Gorvek to rain down dragonfire where you stand.
        • Leave your ability as it is.
          • Gorvek: No matter. Get out there and show your grit.
      • (If the Dragonfire rain battlefield ability is active:)
        • Gorvek: I'm already aiding you. Get out there and fight!
    • Chat.
      • (Only on first time:)
        • Gorvek: World Guardian. I had heard you were coming, but had my doubts as to whether you would make it. This...atrocity. I never thought I would see its like again.
        • Player: It's... What... What is it?
        • Gorvek: Croesus. A living weapon, created at the peak of the Empire's power. The guards stationed here had no warning - no hope of escaping their painful, inglorious deaths. I have done all I can to slow its spread. My flame burns brightly, but I am only one dragon. Standing before this abomination, it is all too easy to lose hope. But we must persevere. Weapons and spells are of no use here. We must fight... but in ways we never anticipated. I am...glad that I do not face it alone.
        • (Continues below.)
      • (After the first time:)
        • Gorvek: Hello again, World Guardian.
        • (Continues below.)
      • Select an option
        • What is Croesus?
          • Gorvek: A sentient, flesh-eating fungus, cultivated thousands of years ago in the secret laboratories of the Praetorians. No doubt the intent was to infect rival cities, then hold them to ransom with an antidote, or step in to 'save' them - turning public favour towards the Empire. Cowardly and vile. But I would expect little better of an organisation built on lies and subterfuge. It was deemed unsuitable for use - too difficult to contain - and the order was given to cease its development. An order the Praetorians ignored. Eventually, Lord Zaros himself intervened, and put an end to Croesus. Or so we thought. The Elder God Bik must have found some way of bringing it back.
          • (Shows the previous options.)
        • How do we fight something like this?
          • Gorvek: I long to burn this place to ash. These warriors died in fear and confusion, and their corpses languish as food. Unforgiveable! But...swords and magic are of little use here, as these unfortunate souls found out all too readily. No. A different approach is required. And a set of skills far more bucolic than those typically sung of in legend. Experts in fishing, mining, woodcutting or hunting can safely harvest the fungus that serves as a link between Croesus and its sources of nourishment - great beasts, exhumed from the graveyard. When enough of this fungus is removed, work can begin on restoring the statues that stand nearby. These statues commemorate unsung heroes, who fought for the good of the Empire using unusual - but ingenious - methods. Restoring them seems to rekindle their powerful spirits - just for an instant. Enough to render Croesus's core vulnerable to attack.
          • (Shows the previous options.)
        • How do you know about Croesus?
          • Gorvek: I first heard of Croesus several millennia ago, when it escaped into the city. I was among the forces called back to the city to neutralise it. I burned the fungus until I had no breath left in me, taking a good amount of the city - and its defenders - with it. Regrettable. But a mercy, compared to the defilement that Croesus wreaks upon living flesh. But despite our best efforts, we failed. So Lord Zaros took matters into his own hands. I watched from above as he tore a great chasm beneath Croesus, casting it into the depths. Then, he buried this whole district beneath vast amounts of earth and stone.
          • Player: So that's why this part of Senntisten lay buried for so long. Wait... Why would Azzanadra bring the Elder Gods' eggs here, if it was the resting place of something so dangerous? He must have known.
          • Gorvek: Lord Zaros's wrath was terrifying to behold. It was inconceivable that anything could have survived. And anything that did remain would have lain buried for thousands of years, bereft of sustenance. No. Croesus was destroyed. I can only speculate that the Elder God Bik was able find traces of its dead matter and revive it somehow. This is not something Azzanadra - or anyone - could have anticipated.
          • (Shows the previous options.)
        • Do you have anything for me?
          • (If the player has not lost any of the books obtained in the graveyard:)
            • Gorvek: No, I don't have anything for you right now.
            • (Shows the previous options.)
          • (If the player has lost any of the books obtained in the graveyard:)
            • Gorvek: I have copies of the books you've found in the graveyard.
            • What would you like a copy of?
              • The Great Beast
                • Player receives The Great Beast.
                • Gorvek hands over The Great Beast

        • Goodbye.
          • Player: That's all for now.

Setting battlefield ability at Gorvek[edit | edit source]

Entering Croesus boss arena[edit | edit source]

  • Gorvek: World Guardian? Good, you're there. Perhaps we can stop Croesus before it grows too strong.
  • Gorvek: First, remove the fungus from the fallen beasts at the far reaches of the Graveyard.
  • Gorvek: Then, take what you gather there and restore the statues of the heroes commemorated nearby.
  • Gorvek: This will rekindle their spirits for an instant, and weaken Croesus so it may be attacked directly.
