The following text is transcluded from Transcript:Archaeology tutorial.
First time

Talking to Acting Guildmaster Reiniger for the first time

  • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: Are you here to sign up with the Archaeology Guild? We've just recently received some serious funding, and we're in need of as much help as we can get.
  • Player: Maybe. Why would I want to become an archaeologist, though?
  • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: You want the sales pitch, right? Need a reason to get down in the dirt with the rest of us working schmoes? Well, I'm sure one of these four core aspects of archaeology will at least get you to give it a shot: wealth, power, fame and stories! Wealth is the easy one. Not only will you find artefacts with their own inherent value, we also have a healthy trade going on between guild members. Any materials you excavate, you can sell to other archaeologists! Power comes in the form of any magical relics you discover in your career. I have no doubt an adventurous sort such as you could gain great value out of increasing your power! Fame comes in the form of being the first to discover something of note or importance. There's more than one way to become a world-renowned archaeologist, and it isn't all just about being the most experienced of us! And finally, the stories. As an archaeologist, you will uncover long forgotten tales of people and places from the past, events lost to time and rediscover things both mysterious and wonderful!
  • Player: Well, I'm sure at least one of those motivates me! Do I need any qualifications?
  • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: Those can come later. I'm sure we can start you off on the basics and you can learn on the job.
  • Player: Great. So, er, what are the basics?
  • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: First off, you're going to need some tools!
  • The tutor hands you a set of Archaeologist's tools and you place them on your tool belt.
  • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: Those tools I just handed you will cover most of your needs - uncovering excavations and restoring damaged artefacts, mostly. However, we've been developing a new tool to do the actual excavation - strong enough to dig out materials quickly, but delicate, for when you need to be careful around an artefact. Take this bronze mattock to start with...
  • The tutor hands you a Bronze mattock.
  • Player receives Bronze mattock.
  • [Left-click the mattock to add it to your tool belt.]
Adding the bronze mattock to the tool belt

  • You add the mattock to the tool belt.
  • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: Now, excavation is one of the two main aspects of archaeology. You'll find a number of excavation hotspots across the various dig sites. Excavation hotspots have many names, but the first step is always to uncover them, like that Senntisten soil over there. Your main goal will be to slowly dig up an artefact from them, but while doing so you will obtain a number of other useful finds. We'll discuss the value of these as we go.
  • The blue bar above your head while you excavate shows your progress towards discovering your next damaged artefact. While excavating, you will also find materials, which are used to restore these damaged artefacts.
  • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: To start with, you will need to uncover each new excavation hotspot that you find. Try it on the pile of Senntisten soil just north of me here...
  • Overhead hint arrow shifts north to the Senntisten soil
Using the bronze mattock on Reiniger

  • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: You should add that to your tool belt, then you'll never be without a mattock when you need one!

Talking to Reiniger after adding the mattock to the tool belt

Uncovering an excavation

  • Excavation: Centurion remains
  • Level requirement: 1
  • Materials: Imperial iron, Purpleheart wood
  • Damaged artefacts: Centurion's dress sword
  • Senntisten soil becomes centurion remains.
  • Player: Neat! I've uncovered an excavation. Now to start excavating at it!
Talking to Reiniger after uncovering the Centurion remains

  • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: Good start! Now the spot is uncovered, you can start excavating there! Give it a go and show me what you find...
General excavating

  • Discovery progress: x/25
  • You find some imperial iron.
  • You find some Purpleheart wood.
  • You've just advanced an Archaeology level! You have reached level 2.
  • You've just advanced an Archaeology level! You have reached level 3.
First soil

  • Player: Yes, I've found some soil!
  • Player receives Senntisten soil.
First material (imperial iron)

  • You find some imperial iron
  • Player: Ah, a material!
Talking to Reiniger before finding the centurion's dress sword

  • Player: I found a material.
  • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: Nice work! You will need lots of materials like this in order to restore any damaged artefacts you dig up. Keep excavating until you discover an artefact!
  • Materials come in many forms, but all of them will be needed for at least one artefact restoration. In the excavation here, you can expect to find imperial iron and purpleheart wood.
Centurion's dress sword

  • Player receives Centurion's dress sword (damaged).
  • You find Centurion's dress sword (damaged)!
  • When excavating, you can make discoveries.
  • These damaged artifacts you discover can be restored, but they require various materials.
  • to see artefact information.
Talking to Reiniger after finding the sword

  • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: See, Player, you don't need any qualifications for this. Now, let's inspect that damaged artefact you discovered.
Attempting to excavate more

  • Player: I think I've excavated all I need for now. I should talk to Acting Guildmaster Reiniger about what comes next.
Talking to Reiniger after destroying the sword

  • The tutor hands you a Centurion's dress sword (damaged).
  • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: See, Player, you don't need any qualifications for this. Now, let's inspect that damaged artefact you discovered.
Inspecting sword

  • (Artefact Information interface opens.)
  • The materials required to restore an artefact are shown here.
  • When you are ready, talk to Acting Guildmaster Reininger about the next step.
Reclaiming materials

Without space in backpack

  • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: I found that damaged artefact, you, er, misplaced... Come back when you have free space to take it back.
With space in backpack

  • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: The tutor hands you a Centurion's dress sword (damaged).

Talking to Acting Guildmaster after finding soil, materials, and sword

  • Player: So, I found some soil, materials and a damaged artefact! Upon inspection, it looks like I will need some more materials before I can restore the artefact, though.
  • (With less than 10 space in backpack:)
    • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: Well, one way to find more materials is to screen any soil you found while excavating.
    • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: I have some more soil for you to screen. Come back after you have freed up some space to take it.
  • (With at least 10 space in backpack:)
    • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: Well, one way to find more materials is to screen any soil you found while excavating. I have some more soil for you to screen.
    • Acting Guildmaster Reininger hands you some more Senntisten soil.
    • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: Head over to the screening station and screen that soil!
Retrieving soil after destroying materials

  • (With less space than topping up to a total of 10 obtained sets of soil:)
    • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: I have some more soil for you to screen. Come back after you have freed up some space to take it.
  • (With enough space in backpack to top up to a total of 10 obtained sets of soil:)
    • Acting Guildmaster Reininger hands you some more Senntisten soil.
    • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: Head over to the screening station and screen that soil!
Screening soil

While screening

  • Soil screened:x/10
  • You find some Imperial iron.
  • You find some Purpleheart wood.
Once 10 soil has been screeened

  • Right, that should be enough screening. What did you find?
  • Player walks back to Acting Guildmaster.
  • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: Screening is a good way to find any materials you might have missed, among other things. The screening station will help you separate the soil from any useful items still hidden within it.
  • (If the player destroyed the Centurion's dress sword (damaged):)
    • The tutor hands you a Centurion's dress sword (damaged).
    • (Continues below)
  • (Continues below)
Attempting to screen more

  • Player: I'd best not mess with that right now.
Introduction to restoration

  • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: So, now for the other main aspect of archaeology - restoration!
  • (If the player destroyed the materials you uncovered:)
    • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: You'll need some more materials to restore that damaged artefact. I have some spare handy you can have. Here...
    • (If the player doesn't have enough space in backpack:)
      • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: Oh, but you'll need some more free space to take this imperial iron.
    • (If the player has enough space in backpack:)
      • The player receives <number> purpleheart wood and <number> imperial iron.
      • (Continues below)
  • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: Damaged artefacts require a lot of materials to restore them back to a pristine condition. To help, we have a material storage container that you can use to store any materials you discover.
  • All damaged artefacts you discover while excavating can be inspected, in order to see which materials you will need in order to restore that artefact, and in what quantity.
  • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: See if you can restore that damaged artefact you dug up! First, check out the material storage container, then make use of the nearby archaeologist's workbench to restore that damaged artefact.
  • View the contents of the material storage container.
  • Hint arrow added to the material storage container
Talking to Reiniger again

    • (With space in backpack:)
      • The tutor hands you a Centurion's dress sword.
      • (Continues below)
  • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: Velucia is a collector who can be found out front of the main building. She might be interested in adding that to her collection. You should go talk to her.
  • Contribute an artefact to a collector.
  • (A guide arrow to Velucia is added.)
Talking to Velucia without the sword

  • Velucia: I'd love a centurion's dress sword for my collection. I'm willing to trade something valuable for it too!
  • Player: I have restored one of those, but I don't have it with me at the moment. I'll see if Acting Guildmaster Reiniger knows were I've misplaced it.
Talking to Velucia with the sword

  • Velucia: Wait! Is that a centurion's dress sword? I'd love that for my collection! I'll trade you something valuable for it!
  • Collectors interface for training weapons opens up.
  • Collectors have an interest in the artefacts that you restore and will reward you for contributing artefacts to their collections.

After claiming the rewards

  • Velucia: Thanks for helping me with my collection! There are many collectors in the world who are interested in artefacts. You can see a list of those that we're aware of on the noticeboard here. The museum is also interested in our discoveries, and will reward you for your contribution.
  • Player: I'd best report back to Acting Guildmaster Reiniger.
  • Hint arrow is added to Acting Guildmaster
Relics

Observing The Mortal Cup

  • Player: What is this thing? I can feel the power emanating from it, and pulling me towards that strange monolith at the centre of the Archaeology campus. I should probably show this to Acting Guildmaster Reiniger...
Talking to Acting Guildmaster after having lost rewards

  • (If the relic has been lost:)
    • (Without space in backpack:)
      • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: You have to be more careful with powerful magic relics! I'll keep hold of this one until you have free space to take it back.
    • (With space in backpack:)
      • The tutor hands you The Mortal Cup.
      • (Continues below)
  • (If chronotes have been lost:)
    • (Without space in backpack:)
      • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: You'll want to hold onto these chronotes as they'll give you access to the amenities across the campus. I'll hold onto them until you have free space.
    • (With space in backpack:)
Talking to Acting Guildmaster with the rewards

  • Player: Velucia handed me the relic in return for the artefact I gave her. It feels like it's drawing me towards the monolith.
  • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: Really? Now, that is unusual. We've been researching that mysterious monolith ever since Guildmaster Tony's disappearance. He was messing with it when he disappeared! Everyone has been too wary to get close to it, though, but if that relic is pulling you towards it...
  • (Continues below)
Directing to the monolith

  • (If the relic has been lost:)
    • The tutor hands you The Mortal Cup.
    • (Continues below)
  • (If chronotes have been lost:)
    • The tutor hands you some Chronotes.
    • (Continues below)
  • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: Hmm, we should see if your connection with the mysterious monolith is any different. Be careful, though!
  • A hint arrow is added to the monolith.
Interacting with the mysterious monolith

Without the relic

  • Player: Hmm, maybe I should grab that relic Velucia gave me.
With the relic

  • Camera fades out, shows the player interacting with the monolith, which has a powerful energy reaction.
  • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: Amazing! You weren't pulled inside the monolith!
  • Player: Wait! That was a possibility?
  • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: Um... Well, that's how Guildmaster Tony vanished. I probably should have been clearer about that part... We've made it off limits to the rest of the guild's members...but there was something about how that relic drew you to it and how confident you were. I just had a feeling things would work out this time...and look, I wasn't wrong.
  • Player: Wow. How many interns have you been through?
  • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: I'm sorry, okay, don't judge me. We've been accident free since Tony's disappearance. Anyway, let's see if you can tap into the monolith and access the power that relic contained.
  • (If chronotes have been lost:)
    • The tutor hands you some Chronotes.
    • (Continues below)
  • Relic Power interface shows up, having unlocked the access to the Font of Life relic power.
Harnessing power of the relic

  • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: You managed to access the power that relic contained. I'm impressed Player! Here I was thinking I was recruiting just another intern today. I wasn't expecting you to go one better than our very own Guildmaster! I've only assumed the position of Acting Guildmaster, because I believe Tony can and will return to us. That said, I feel you have the potential to climb up our ranks very quickly - you've a natural affinity with this stuff. Speaking of which, come and meet me in the main campus building just west of here to claim your first qualification. We need to get you working at a dig site pronto!
  • Screen fades out and back in.
  • Hint arrow is added to the main Archaeology campus.
Guild

Talking to Acting Guildmaster inside guild

  • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: I believe you have the potential to become a world-renowned archaeologist, Player. You're a natural. More than that, you have a connection with that monolith out there - something nobody else has. I bet there are many powerful relics you could sacrifice to it. Feel free to make use of the Guildmaster's office upstairs. We're all making use of it for now, until Tony returns. Before you go, let me give you a quick tour of what's on offer here in the office
  • Camera pans to Dig sites map table.
  • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: This table contains a map of all archaeological dig sites. You may use it as a method of fast travel.
  • Camera pans to Matty Ock.
  • Acting guildmaster Reiniger: Matty Ock sells all of your basic mattocks to get you well on your way on your journey.
  • Camera pans to Ezreal.
  • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: When you get new qualifications, there will be more available for you to purchase from Ezreal's shop. You'll need to get your hands on a bunch of chronotes should you wish to purchase anything around here though. For now, they are stocking a soil box, for free! I'd suggest picking one up as it will save you lots of space when out in the field.
  • Camera returns to normal.
  • (Continues below)
Directing to Ezreal

  • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: Go and grab yourself a soil box from Ezreal and then come back to me.
  • A hint arrow to Ezreal is added.
Talking to Ezreal

  • Ezreal: Everything belongs in a museum! It also happens that contributing to Velucia's collections is a good way to earn chronotes, which you can spend in my shop! Want a look? We have a range of consumables and unlocks to assist your archaeological progress, whatever level of qualification you've achieved!
  • (Archaeology Guild Shop interface opens.)
Talking to Acting Guildmaster again

  • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: Excellent! You can upgrade your soil box capacity as you advance through qualifications. Now you have nearly everything you need to get out there and start excavating. The final thing is to give you this journal.
  • (Without space in backpack:)
    • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: Make some space in your backpack, and then come and talk to me.
  • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger hands you a journal
  • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: All archaeologists should have a journal to make notes on their travels, but it also has some other handy features. Checking in on your overall progress and getting you back to the guild quickly are just a couple of things it can do. Feel free to stick it in your pocket whilst you're out and about, you never know when it might come in handy. And without further ado, I'm pleased to welcome you as a new intern to the Archaeology Guild. Please accept this certificate of qualification.
  • Talk to the guildmaster to collect your qualification reward.
  • Congratulations! you have completed: 'Qualification - Intern' - Complete the Archaeology tutorial.
  • Tutorial complete!
  • (Continues below)
Post-tutorial

  • Acting guildmaster Reiniger: Right, now that you're an official guild member, you should get out there and start excavating! We've got a team over at Kharid-et that could do with another pair of hands. I'll get someone to take you there now.
  • Player is teleported to Kharid-Et.

Without a qualification ceremony to attend[edit | edit source]

  • What would you like to chat about?
    • Where should I be excavating?
      • Acting Guildmater Reiniger: Let's see... Where would you be most useful right now?
      • (With access to only Kharid-et Dig Site:)
        • Acting Guildmater Reiniger: For now, I think you're best just sticking with Kharid-et, which is situated east of Al Kharid. Look for Dr Nabanik south of the Duel Arena. He'll show you the ropes a bit more.
      • (With access to multiple but not all dig sites:)
        • (Transcript missing. edit)
      • (With access to all the dig sites:)
        • Acting Guildmater Reiniger: Well, it's really your choice at this point! You can go anywhere. I'd suggest you pick a focus - a collection you wish to complete, a mystery you'd like to solve, some research you'd like to focus on or even a particular relic you'd like to find.
        • Acting Guildmater Reiniger: Until the time sprites point us to a new location, we can't be sure of where to dig, but the moment they arrive anywhere new, we'll let you know.
        • Acting Guildmater Reiniger: We want our best and brightest excavating there - er, wherever 'there' is - that's for sure!

          • Guildmaster Tony: Oh, I hope this really works.
          • Guildmaster Tony: I'm no god, this could be really dangerous.
          • Guildmaster Tony: Here goes...
          • (The monolith starts to emanate with power.)
          • Guildmaster Tony: Uh
          • (The monolith starts to pull Tony.)
          • Guildmaster Tony: Oh
          • Guildmaster Tony: No
          • Guildmaster Tony: No, no, no
          • (The monolith starts pulls Tony in.))
          • Guildmaster Tony: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
    • (If the player has 99 Archaeology:)

        • Select an option
          • I'm wondering if you've got any skillcapes lying about?
            • Player: I'm wondering if you've got any skillcapes lying about?
            • Acting Guildmater Reiniger: I hope they're not laying about! Any old sod could pick one up and flaunt it around, but... I have had something made especially for you, the skillcape of Archaeology as a token of your mastery in the field. Unfortunately, it's quite costly to procure the materials needed to craft such an impressive cape, so it is yours at a cost. For that I require 99,000 coins.
              • Choose an option:
                • 99,000 coins? That's much too expensive.
                  • Acting Guildmater Reiniger: Not at all; there are many other adventurers who would love the opportunity to purchase such a prestigious item! You can find me here if you change your mind.
                • I think I have the money right here, actually.
                  • Acting Guildmater Reiniger: Excellent! Wear that cape with pride my friend.
                  • Some music plays and the player purchases the archaeology cape.
          • I've noticed there are a couple of versions of each skillcape.
            • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: Yes! We, the skill masters, have crafted the new versions of all skillcapes! We felt like it was time for a change.
            • (If the player currently has the new model activated:)
              • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: You can still choose to wear the old model skillcape if you want. Would you like to change which model you are currently using?

                    • I would like to change all my skillcapes.
                      • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: No problem, you will now use the older model for all of your skillcapes!

                  • (If there are skillcapes not using the new model:)
                      • Acting Guildmaster Reiniger: If you want, I can make it so you use the newer model for all of the skillcapes you own!

                • Yes, I would like to wear the new version of the skillcape.
