The Winter Trials is the thirteenth Yak Track event which ran from 5 December 2022 until 29 January 2023. Like all of its predecessors it featured two prize tracks: free and premium, the latter of which gave a larger number of prizes. Players could unlock the premium track by having an active Premier Membership or by exchanging two bonds for a Premier Pass. Exchanging the two bonds for the Premier Pass will not affect a players' membership status. For the fourth time, there was a Skill and Kill option for every tier of the track.
Tasks[edit | edit source]
Upon logging in during the event, the Yak Track Task List appeared in the players' backpack unless already owned. This list could be read to access the event interface. The interface could also be opened through the Upgrades & Extras interface, talking to Brundt the Chieftain in Burthorpe, event noticeboards, the Activity Tracker once a task is pinned to it, and the event login and task completion messages.
Players could complete either task to progress to the next tier. Players can skip tiers, including the repeatable tier at the end of the track, by using task skips. Every player was provided with two task skips at the start of the event, and more could be purchased with bonds via the store. Unused skips carry over from the previous Yak Track events, and will also carry over to future events. Players who reached tier 40 in the previous Yak Track with the premier rewards unlocked got a 50% progress boost for the first 10 tasks.
For the first 50 tiers it was not required to claim the rewards for completing the previous tier before progressing the next tiers. For the repeatable tier, however, claiming the reward is required.

Strategies[edit | edit source]
Players can utilize a number of strategies to reduce the time needed to complete the tasks.
Skilling tasks[edit | edit source]
Skilling tasks require the player to gather or process a certain number of items, or earn a certain amount of experience. Some items and buffs and allow the player to gain extra items. It varies whether this counts towards gathering tasks. For example, dwarven tools are inconsistent because extra fish from the dwarven fish extractor's resource mode count towards Fishing tasks, but extra logs from the dwarven chainaxe do not count towards Woodcutting tasks.
For experience tasks, only the base experience awarded for a respective skill counts. Additional experience gained through modifiers such as elite skilling outfit perks, advanced pulse cores, bonus experience, auras, and knowledge bombs, as well as many other sources, do not count toward a player's task progress.
Agility
[edit | edit source]
For experience tasks, only base experience counts. This includes the following sources:
- silverhawk boots
- agility skill training dummies
- Balancing on serenity posts
The following methods do not contribute towards experience tasks:
- Voyages with the Tengu from the player-owned port
Players with 99 Agility can gain approximately 184,985 experience per hour at the Anachronia Agility Course.
Archaeology
[edit | edit source]
Only base experience counts for experience tasks. This includes:
- excavating at dig sites and material caches
- restoring artefacts
- screening soil (either at a screening station or via the use of Sift Soil from the Lunar spells)
- completing mysteries
- adding pylon batteries at the Kharid-et Dig Site
- adding rex skeleton fragments at the Orthen Dig Site
- archaeologist's tea
Experience from the following sources do not count toward the player's progress:
- completing normal and special research expeditions
- turning in complete tomes
- using the auto-screener v1.080 to screen soil (as it does not give experience)
At level 120 Archaeology, approximately 400,000 base experience per hour can be achieved with the use of boosts such as the master archaeologist's outfit and the master archaeology cape, and the best mattock available. Activating the Flow State relic power adds a 20% precision boost but does not yield soil. Although these things do not increase the base experience, the hefty boost to a player's mattock precision allows more artefacts to be excavated per hour. Artefacts from level 60 onward take the same amount of time to excavate, so sticking with the highest level hotspot a player can access using the above mentioned boosts, and then purchasing the missing materials on the Grand Exchange that are required to restore the collected artefacts, will get a player through the task much faster. Another method is to restore a stack of stockpiled damaged artefacts; this allows the experience tasks to be completed in just a few minutes.
Construction
[edit | edit source]
Building with mahogany planks can yield approximately 600,000 experience per hour. Experience from the following sources also counts towards the player's progress:
- Using protean planks (either on build hotspots, workbenches in player-owned houses, or portable workbenches)
- Completing Construction Contracts
- Experience from constructing royal battleship kits and fighting with toy royal battleships
- Experience from trading in curved and long bones to Barlak
Experience from the following sources does not count towards the tasks:
- God Statues
- Voyages with the Architect from the player-owned port
Cooking[edit | edit source]
Extra items created by the modified sous chef's toque and portable ranges count toward the player's progress. As such, having a Brooch of the Gods equipped while cooking on portable ranges will help expedite Cooking yasks. Fish that are caught and cooked with the Bait and Switch relic power active do count for this task unless the "consume all" option on any of the various shark outfits is enabled.
Cooking fish takes 2.4 seconds, or four game ticks. At most only 1,300 fish per hour can be cooked at maximum efficiency as swapping cooked fish for raw ones and interacting with a range takes time. This can be increased either through the extra fish produced from using a portable range and modified toque, or through tick manipulation at a portable range.
Crafting[edit | edit source]
Only base experience counts for experience tasks. This includes:
- Looms at Clan Citadels
- Crafting protean hides
- Crafting player-owned port equipment
- Extra experience from crafting crystal flasks while the Voice of Seren is active in the Ithell Clan district
- Extra experience from portable crafters
Although expensive, crafting black dragonhide shields can yield approximately 550,400 experience per hour. For free players, cutting diamonds offers similar experience rates, although this method is very expensive as well. Players with access to the player-owned port may find it useful to stockpile Koi Scales, Lacquer, and Pearls as crafting items from trade goods also yields very fast experience.
Divination
[edit | edit source]
Energies obtained from conversion of memories count towards task completion and can be used for faster task completion. Using the divine-o-matic vacuum also works. However, this is not recommended due to the vacuum's caveat of destroying 50% of collected memories. Destroyed resources do not count toward a player's progress. As such, the convenience of not having to wait for memories to be converted is negated by the halved gathering rate.
Players with access to the Divine Conversion relic power can instantly convert all memories in their inventory at once. It is superior to the divine-o-matic in this case and is up to twice as efficient because it eliminates the conversion delay without the 50% penalty to harvested resources. Players who do not meet the requirements for Divine Conversion can participate in a Guthixian Cache to gain a 10% chance to convert all memories for up to 20 minutes.
Further efficiency can be achieved via the following means:
- Summoning a nightmare muspah familiar
- An energy-gathering scrimshaw
- Having turned in a completed memory-storage bot (Cres) to the Archivist
- Wearing the full elder divination outfit
Approximately 12,000 energy can be harvested per hour under ideal conditions.
Dungeoneering[edit | edit source]
For experience tasks, only base experience counts. This includes the following sources:
- Dungeoneering skill training dummies
- Extra experience from Dungeoneering Wildcards
- Abridged books from Fremennik Sagas
- Defeating monsters in Elite Dungeons
On experienced teams, over 1,000,000 experience per hour can be easily achieved.
The following methods do not contribute towards experience tasks:
- Experience from Sinkholes or entering a mysterious entrance for the first time
- Voyages with the Exile from the player-owned port
- Using the Dungeoneering hole at the Summer Beach Party
- Trading in Dungeoneering tokens at the rewards trader
Firemaking[edit | edit source]
Using a pitch can allows a player to burn logs extremely quickly. Use an action bar setup where a log is lit on one key and a Beast of Burden item is withdrawn on another. Then use an attuned crystal teleport seed or master camouflage outfit to teleport to the Trahaearn Clan district in Prifddinas. Create a line of fires from there until reaching the southwest corner, and teleport back to the Trahaearn Clan. Approximately 950 logs per hour can be burned. A cheap and less intensive, but slower, alternative is to use portable braziers.
The following count towards Firemaking tasks:
- Logs burnt via activation of the Pyromaniac perk
- Incinerating logs using the Inferno Adze
- Burning evil tree kindlings at the bonfire after killing an Evil Tree also count towards the task (although using them to light the tree on fire does not)
The following do not contribute to the player's progress:
- Burning protean logs
- cremating bones
- burning logs using the Book of Char
Fishing[edit | edit source]
The following methods count for Fishing tasks:
- The dwarven fish extractor set to resource mode
- Consuming fish with any variant of the shark outfit
- Extra fish caught by any variant of the shark outfit while it's set to catch
- Extra fish caught with fishing cape
- Catching fish from divine locations without having Shared Knowledge buff from Memorial to Guthix active
- Catching fish with Bait and Switch relic power harnessed
- Catching additional fish with Deep Sea Fishing boosts
The following methods don't count for Fishing tasks:
- Extra fish gained from any variant of the shark outfit's extra-catch chance while it's set to consume
- Catching fish from divine locations with having Shared Knowledge buff from Memorial to Guthix active
- Fish consumed by the activation of the Furnace perk
- Fish duplicated by a waterfiend familiar
- Fish duplicated by the Fortune perk
Players with tier 7 overall reputation in Menaphos should consider the VIP skilling area as it is likely faster and far less effort than catching sharks if the task includes any of the fish there, despite the chance of also catching fish that are not counted.
Around 360 fish can be fished per hour at high-level fishing spots. Divine fishing locations without Shared Knowledge can yield fish even quicker until the daily limit has been reached. Using a dwarven fish extractor set to resource mode does double fish from divine locations.
Fletching[edit | edit source]
For experience tasks, fletching dragon darts can yield approximately 1,500,000 experience per hour. Free players can gain around 1.1 million experience per hour with rune darts. However, both methods are very expensive.
It is also possible to fletch protean logs, although this method is slower.
Herblore
[edit | edit source]
For experience tasks, participating in Herby Werby counts. Assuming a player already has the ingredients, mixing extreme prayers can yield 3,300,000 base experience per hour. For a potion with tradeable ingredients, spirit attraction potions can yield 3,025,000 experience per hour. Weapon poison+++ is also a fast alternative for players who have not found the spirit attraction recipe, although this method may result in a loss.
Voyages with the Biologist from the player-owned port do not count towards the player's progress.
Hunter
[edit | edit source]
The use of a hunter skill training dummy stack can quickly provide lots of experience. Using protean traps does count towards experience progress. The experience gained during Big Chinchompa also counts, though lamps bought from the reward shop do not.
Hunting ornate tortles can yield approximately 361,215 experience per hour.
Gathering from decaying Varrock guards and decaying Lumbridge guards in the south-eastern part of the Croesus Front yields fast experience, maybe even faster than ornate tortles. Gathered fungal spores can be used for mushy mush or sold in Grand Exchange. This can be quite low-effort activity with small profit using magic notepaper.
Gathering from divine bird snares, deadfalls and box traps counts.
Completing the Butterfly Swarm event in Wilderness Flash Events does not count (although the token experience from catching magical butterflies does). Experience voyages with the Trapper from the player-owned port do not count either.
Mining[edit | edit source]
Additional ores gathered by having the relevant bottled stone spirit in the inventory count towards the completion of the task, as do other double-ore bonuses e.g. those from the Varrock armour. Using the highest tier ore box available reduces the number of bank trips needed.
Coal and Gold can be mined 10 at a time using stone spirits at the Living Rock Caverns from concentrated coal deposit and concentrated gold deposits. Use of the magic golem outfit (or fury shark outfit) is recommended as it makes creatures in the caverns become passive. To avoid banking, use of signs of the porter and optionally a grace of the elves necklace is recommended. Perfect juju mining potions can be used to keep stamina up in conjunction with stone spirits. Varrock armour 1 and completion of the easy and medium New Varrock achievements to avoid wearing the Varrock armour and double its activation chance, help as well. Premier Club members can make use of the sign of the porter boost from the premier artefact to send half of all gathered materials straight to the metal bank.
Up to approximately 400 ore per hour can be mined. Divine mining locations without Shared Knowledge can yield ore even quicker until the daily limit has been reached.
Hallvar in the Jatizso dungeon mine can note banite ore if you have fremennik sea boots 4.
Prayer[edit | edit source]
The bonecrusher counts for tasks that require bones to be buried. To save money, a player can therefore kill skeletons in Lumbridge Catacombs, blue dragons in the Taverley Dungeon, or similar. Players who use super antifire potions will not be hurt by steel dragons at range, as they only use dragonfire outside of melee distance. They can be found in the Brimhaven Dungeon and Brimhaven Dungeon resource dungeon.
Another way to collect dragon bones is by killing Vindicta in the Heart of Gielinor. This boss commonly drops 150–250 noted dragon bones, however the bones must first be banked and then withdrawn to be buried individually in order for this to work. Cremation and offering bones or ashes at the Ectofuntus, gilded altar, or the Chaos Temple in the Wilderness, all count towards the task progression. Scattering the ashes using an attuned ectoplasmator or consuming the ashes using an infernal urn doesn't work.
The fastest way to complete this task is to stand at a bank, fill an inventory with the desired bones, and save that to a bank preset. Drag the bones to an action bar and select a key binding. Simply spam the key bind and when finished, quick withdraw from the bank using the bone preset. Auto sanctifiers can be used to gain increased experience using the above method. The dragon rider amulet is another alternative for dragon bones, though it does not stack with the auto sanctifier.
Around 4,000 bones can be crushed per hour with the bonecrusher under the right conditions.
Runecrafting[edit | edit source]
Only base experience counts for experience tasks. This includes experience from:
- Unstable essence
- Handing in runes to the yellow wizard in the Runespan
- Handing in rune dust to the runesphere
- Experience gained from crafting seasinger's equipment counts. Players with access to the player-owned port may find it helpful to stockpile chi in preparation
- Protean essence
- Touching the soul obelisks in Menaphos
Players with level 99 Runecrafting can gain around 93,000 experience per hour in the Runespan. It is possible to further increase this by using the focused siphoning aura or above.
The following do not contribute towards experience tasks:
- Teleporting runecrafting urns
- Voyages with the Occultist from the player-owned port
Slayer
[edit | edit source]
The following methods count towards Slayer tasks:
- A slayer skill training dummy can provide lots of experience quickly
- Corrupted Scarabs in Menaphos have no combat requirements, provide easy Slayer experience and can be found fairly easy with dedicated Friends Chats
- Experience gained from Reaper tasks
- Bonus experience from slayer masks
- Defeating Bork
At high combat levels, players can achieve around 547,200 experience per hour, but this is largely dependent on the Slayer tasks that are randomly assigned.
The following methods do not count towards the player's progress:
- Voyages with the Assassin from the player-owned port
- Experience gained from the skeletal horror
- Experience from killing fanatics in God Statues
Smithing[edit | edit source]
Only base experience counts for experience tasks. This includes experience from:
- protean bars
- Furnaces in Clan Citadels
- Experience gained from repairing burst pipes in the Artisans' Workshop
- Experience gained from smelting corrupted ores
- Folding alloy bars; however, this is extremely slow and not recommended
- Smithing ceremonial swords in the Artisans' Workshop
- Players can gain very fast experience by smithing Tetsu equipment in their player-owned port if they have plate stockpiled
At high Smithing levels, members can achieve over 1,000,000 experience per hour by smithing burial armour. Free players can gain up to around 170,000 experience per hour. However, this method is very expensive.
Teleporting smelting urns does not count towards experience tasks.
Summoning
[edit | edit source]
Making talon beast pouches can yield approximately 2,741,040 experience per hour, although a steady supply of untradeable talon beast charms cannot be guaranteed due to the rarity of encountering talon beasts during the Temple Trekking minigame.
Making geyser titan pouches can yield over 2 million experience per hour and its tertiary ingredient, Water talisman, can be bought on the Grand Exchange.
It is recommended to make pouches during the Amlodd hour of the Voice of Seren to get the 20% xp bonus.
Thieving
[edit | edit source]
Experience gained from safecracking counts, but the experience from turning the spoils in to Chief Thief Robin does not.
At a high Thieving level, around 950,000 experience can be gained per hour by cracking the hidden safes.
Experience voyages with the Convict from the player-owned port do not count.
Woodcutting[edit | edit source]
Going to Uncharted Isles and cutting golden bamboo is faster and less intensive than cutting magic trees.
The following methods count for these tasks:
- Using Superheat Form, which can remove the need for banking, which is especially useful when cutting lower level trees.
- Gathering from divine locations without Shared Knowledge buff from Memorial to Guthix.
The following method don't count for these tasks:
- Extra logs and bamboo from the dwarven chainaxe's resource mode.
- Gathering from divine locations with Shared Knowledge buff from Memorial to Guthix.
- Downgrading resources with Cheapskate, regardless if either the tree or downgraded logs, or both, would count.
At a high Woodcutting level, around 360 bamboo per hour can be cut. Divine woodcutting locations without Shared Knowledge can yield logs even quicker until the daily limit has been reached.
Other tasks[edit | edit source]
Clue Scrolls
[edit | edit source]
Clue scroll tasks are completed by doing Treasure Trails. Players receive progress based on the level of the trail that is completed. Easy trails provide 1 progress, medium trails provide 2 progress, hard trails provide 3 progress, elite trails provide 4 progress, and master trails provide 5 progress. An entire trail must be completed before any progress is rewarded, and progress is given per trail despite the task's description.
Caskets obtained from Penguin Hide and Seek do not count.
Skill and Kill[edit | edit source]
For Skill and Kill tasks a point of progress is rewarded for the first skilling action performed or monster killed in three-minute intervals of the clock's game time, disregarding seconds. Some monsters, such as rats, do not award progress when killed. Once a point of progress is rewarded, the next point of progress will be rewarded once the clock has passed three minutes. For example, if a point of progress is rewarded anywhere on :03, the next point of progress will be rewarded starting from :06:00.
Gaining experience is not required for progress; activities such as failing a Woodcutting roll for logs yields progress even though experience is not gained. From monsters, however, progress is given when the monster dies and experience is gained.
Various actions may not award points, such as creating signs of the porter, cooking rocktail or sailfish soup, collecting cave nightshade, spinning flax with Spin Flax, or collecting from divine locations.
Capping at the citadel awards progress on all skilling plots except the obelisk (summoning).
When Discovering at an Invention workbench, a point is only recorded when you close the window after completing a discovery. This means that discovering multiple items will only count as a single point, if you do not close the window between discoveries.
A maximum of 20 points per hour can be gained.
This track adds up to a total of 3,400 points. Earning experience at least once every three minutes would take about 170 hours to complete.
Yakstory[edit | edit source]
Talk to Brundt the Chieftain in the Yak Track area in Burthorpe, just south-west of Challenge Mistress Fara. Exiting the dialogue after asking "What brings you to Burthorpe?" will complete the task.
Store[edit | edit source]
Players can purchase the access to premier rewards and Yak Track task skip from the event interface using bonds.

Rewards[edit | edit source]
Players receive cosmetics and items for progressing through each of the 50 tasks in order. Ironman accounts will receive only the cosmetic rewards. Free players will not receive members rewards, such as large prismatic lamps or silverhawk feathers. However, players who later become members will be able to claim any missed rewards. Likewise, if tasks are completed without a premier pass and the player later gains a premier pass, all of the previous premier rewards will automatically unlock.
All weapons and armour received are cosmetic overrides.
