The Knight Before Christmas

The Knight Before Christmas is a Yak Track event which lasted from 14 December 2020 to 24 January 2021. It featured a track of tasks, with each task offering rewards when completed. The rewards were separated into two categories, free and premier. Players could unlock the access to premier rewards by having an active Premier Club membership or by purchasing a Yak Track Premier Pass for the price of two bonds.

Tasks[edit | edit source]

Upon logging in during the event, the Yak Track Task List appeared in the players' backpack. This list can be read to access the event interface. The interface could also be opened through the Upgrades & Extras interface, Robin in Burthorpe, Activity Tracker once a task is pinned to it, or, after 4 January 2021, event noticeboards. (The Curator, who stood very close to Robin, was part of a separate activity.)

Players could complete either task to progress to the next tier.

Players could skip tiers by using task skips. Every player was provided with two task skip tokens at the start of the event, and more could be purchased with bonds via the store. Unused tokens carried over from the previous Yak Track events, and carried over to the Yak to Basics event.

Clue Scrolls[edit | edit source]

Clue Scrolls tasks are completed by doing Treasure Trails. Players receive progress based on the level of trail completed. Easy trails provide 1 progress, medium trails provide 2 progress, hard trails provide 3 progress, elite trails provide 4 progress, and master trails provide 5 progress.

Despite the interface claiming that progress is gained upon completing scrolls, the whole trail must be completed before any progress is rewarded, and the progress is rewarded as above.

Present Hunt[edit | edit source]

Similar to past years Present Hide and Seek, this requires finding presents scattered across Gielinor using magical jingle bells. The locations change periodically, slightly past each hour, and only some of the locations listed below will have a present at any one time. The locations are not the same in different worlds. The magical jingle bells can be used to get a hint towards a location, and to obtain periodic messages about the player's proximity to the present once at the general location.

The presents display a red dot on the minimap.

All clues are displayed in the format "The Magical jingle bells draw you towards [hint]."

Hint Location Map
[...]a castle with a bridge of heroes Falador Castle, just north of main door
[...]a city square where four swords cross Centre of the fountain in Varrock square
[...]a city that is frequented by Trolls Burthorpe, south-east of the lodestone and near Xuan
[...]a guild that is dedicated to restoring the past Archaeology Guild, next to the screening station
[...]a marketplace with a central ring Varrock Grand Exchange, just east of the south entrance
[...]a mountain on which it forever snows Ice Mountain, north side by the white tree
[...]a room that is fit for a Duke 1st floor[UK]2nd floor[US] of Lumbridge Castle
[...]a small town with slime problems Rimmington
[...]a small village that is known by two names Barbarian Village, north-east of the Stronghold of Security entrance
[...]a small village that is popular for its willows Draynor Village, south of the bank
[...]a swamp that is the result of decay Lumbridge Swamp, north of copper and tin mine
[...]a tower with portals to a different realm ground floor[UK]1st floor[US] of Wizards' Tower, next to the beam
[...]an abbey that is famous for its music Citharede Abbey, east of Al Kharid

Collecting a present gives a point of progress towards the task completion, and rewards the player with either Christmas pudding, mince pie, mulled wine, roast potatoes, turkey drumstick, or Yule log.

Skill and Kill[edit | edit source]

For Skill and Kill tasks a point of progress is rewarded for the first skilling action performed or monster killed in three-minute intervals. The cooldown timer doesn't start from the time when you gain progress, so if you are not continuously performing actions eligible for progress, the time between two points can be shorter. For example, if intervals start at :05, :08, :11, :14, etc., then it is possible for points be gained at :07, :09, and :13, since each point is gained within a unique 3-minute interval.

Strategies[edit | edit source]

Skilling tasks[edit | edit source]

Agility[edit | edit source]

For fastest course disregarding experience rates, use Bandos Agility Course. A lap can be finished in approximately 33 seconds, and with good timing of Surge and Bladed Dive this can be cut down to 27 seconds.

Using the Prifddinas Agility course in Hefin, a single lap takes around 50 seconds. Turn the camera to look east, place the mouse cursor at a specific location to the left of the character, and then click in the same spot in order to climb every single obstacle in the course. It might require some adjustments to find the right spot. On windows, "Mouse keys" can be enabled to control the mouse with a keypad. Then press 5 on the number pad to click. Doing this removes the risk of moving the cursor and missing the exact spot.

Its also possible to do the Barbarian Outpost Agility Course or Gnome Stronghold Agility Course advanced courses. The combined need to do just over 250 laps means that you can acquire the agile legs or agile top a requirement for Fremennik achievements and trimmed completionist cape. Lap times are very close to Bandos Agility Course.

As of this Yak track, the Anachronia Agility Course now awards progress upon each segment. While not the fastest way to complete the task it is an optimal way to do so if one is looking for experience.

Archaeology[edit | edit source]

Only excavating at dig sites and material caches, restoring artefacts, and sifting soil count for experience tasks. Experience awarded for normal and special research expeditions, turning in complete tomes, and bonus experience awarded by either variant of the archaeologist's outfit does not count. If an artefact is restored while wearing either skilling outfit, only the base experience value is counted for the task, and the outfit bonus is ignored. It is likely that the same outfit bonus exclusion persists when excavating or sifting soil. However, experience awarded for completing a mystery does count toward the task. Experience gained from adding pylon batteries at the Kharid-et Dig Site, and from adding Rex skeleton fragments at the Orthen Dig Site will also count.

Artefacts restored using a soil tea boost do not count towards the task as they do not appear on the objective list.

Construction[edit | edit source]

Using a flatpack depacker speeds up progress by noting or disassembling flatpacks, while allowing to make 60 at a time. Alternatively, build the construction item using the relevant hotspot.

Using protean planks and magic notepaper eliminate the need to bank as well as the depacker. Leave the house to use the notepaper.

Construction contracts count towards task including the contract experience reward.

Adding Christmas cracker paper to the Christmas cracker at the Grand Exchange counts. However, there is a cap of 15,000 pieces of paper per cracker cycle. The experience from pulling the cracker during the event is also counted.

Cooking[edit | edit source]

The task counts items created by modified sous chef's toque and portable ranges. Unlike during the previous Yak Tracks, wobbegong oil does work.

Fish that are caught and cooked with the Bait and Switch relic active do not count for this task.

Divination[edit | edit source]

Energies obtained from conversion of memories count towards task completion and can be done for faster tasks. The divine-o-matic also works, and it speeds up tasks as memories do not have to be converted or deposited.

Using the Divine Conversion relic and converting memories to energy speeds up the tasks considerably.

Dungeoneering[edit | edit source]

Floors can be completed quickly by setting their complexity to 1 and size to small. Completing ticked floors also counts towards the challenge, but provides little to no experience.

Farming[edit | edit source]

The task counts harvest actions from patches, not how many patches that the player chooses to harvest at. If multiple items are yielded in a single harvesting action, only one point of progress is gained, and if the patch is harvested continually in multiple actions, progress is gained for each action. Always have fully grown plants in all patches possible. A list can be found at here. Plant both in the Allotment/Flower/Herb patches list and the Herb-only patches list. Use a master farmer outfit to get more herbs from the patches. For more yield, treat patches with supercompost or ultracompost, have magic secateurs in the tool belt, drink juju farming potion and use greenfingers aura. The extra items from the aura and potion will not count for the task but they are still useful for other purposes. Supreme growth potions can be used if seeds have not been planted in advance. Items gathered via the farming cape perk do not count, so make sure to take the cape off before harvesting.

Fishing[edit | edit source]

The dwarven fish extractor set to double catch mode counts towards these tasks. Consuming fish with a fury shark outfit counts towards the task. A fishing cape can be used to occasionally catch another fish.

Baron sharks from perfect juju fishing potions do not count, so it is recommended to fish something else if drinking them.

The VIP skilling area area is likely faster and far less effort than catching sharks, despite the chance of also catching fish that don't count.

Catching fish from divine locations do work towards these tasks. However, if you have the Shared Knowledge perk from Memorial to Guthix active, it doesn't count towards Yak task progress.

Fish that are caught with the Bait and Switch relic active count for these tasks.

Firemaking[edit | edit source]

Using a pitch can allows the player to burn logs extremely fast. Use an action bar setup where a log is lit on one key and a Beast of Burden item is withdrawn on another. Then use the attuned crystal teleport seed and teleport to the Trahaearn Clan district in Prifddinas. Create a line of fires from there, and teleport back.

The cheap alternative but slower method was using portable brazier.

Logs burnt via activation of the Pyromaniac perk count towards the task. Logs burnt using the Book of Char do not count.

Burning kindling at the bonfire after killing an Evil Tree counts towards the task, however using them to light the tree on fire does not.

Mining[edit | edit source]

Additional ores gathered by having the relevant bottled stone spirit in the inventory count towards the completion of the task.

Using the highest tier ore box you have reduce the amount of bank trips.

Coal can be mined extremely fast at the Living Rock Caverns from concentrated coal deposit.

Use of an elite Mining outfit is recommended as it makes creatures in the caverns become passive. Alternatively an elite Fishing outfit can be used. To avoid banking, use a sign of the porter (optionally in a grace of the elves). To increase yield per rock, use coal stone spirit. Optionally use perfect juju mining potion as well to keep stamina up. At least Varrock armour 1, and easy (to avoid wearing the Varrock armour) and medium New Varrock achievements (to double chance) helps as well.

The use of a grace of the elves acting as a sign of the porter allows longer trips without having to bank. In addition if you are a premier club member, the sign of the porter boost from the premier artefact banks half of what you collect straight to the metal bank.

Prayer[edit | edit source]

The bonecrusher counts for tasks that require bones to be buried. To save money, a player can therefore kill skeletons in Lumbridge Catacombs, blue dragons in the Taverley Dungeon, or similar. Players who use super antifire potions will not be hurt by steel dragons at all as they only use dragon fire at a distance. They can be found in Brimhaven Dungeon and Brimhaven Dungeon resource dungeon.

Another way to collect dragon bones is by killing Vindicta in the Heart of Gielinor. This boss commonly drops 150–250 noted dragon bones.

Auto sanctifier can be used to gain increased experience while burying the bones at a bank for faster task completion. Dragon rider amulet is another alternative for dragon bones, though it does not stack with auto sanctifier.

Cremation, offering bones at Ectofuntus, at the gilded altar and at the Chaos Temple in Wilderness count towards the task progression.

Unlike during the previous tracks, scattering infernal ashes also gives progress towards the task. Offering the ashes on a gilded altar or at the Ectofuntus also works. Scattering the ashes using an attuned ectoplasmator or consuming the ashes using an infernal urn doesn't work.

Runecrafting[edit | edit source]

With Legacy of Seergaze complete, a player can create blood runes with the wicked hood teleport. Bring a full inventory of pure essence and Runecrafting pouches, as well as a familiar like abyssal titan full of essence. Once in the altar, use the hood's "withdraw essence" option. Elsewise, Tirannwn quiver 3 obtained from the completion of hard Tirannwn achievements provides five free teleports to Death Altar per day.

Additional runes can be crafted in the Runespan with a complete ethereal outfit.

Additional runes gained from the powerburst of sorcery effect do count for task progress.

For free players, one can quickly craft body runes at the body altar by using the skull sceptre obtained from the Stronghold of Security to quickly teleport to Gunnarsgrunn south-east of the altar. Players should have a full inventory of rune essences and a body tiara equipped. Banking at the War's Retreat with the PvM hub teleport spell is recommended.

Slayer[edit | edit source]

Completing tasks from lower level slayer master such as Turael or Spria are generally much faster than higher level ones. If a player changes their task with Spria or Turael, their task count will be reset back to zero.

Reaper tasks count as slayer tasks too.

Slayer Challenges don't count towards the task.

Smithing[edit | edit source]

Experience gained from protean bars does count.

Woodcutting[edit | edit source]

Going to uncharted islands and cutting golden bamboo is faster and less intensive than cutting yews or magic trees.

Using Superheat form counts towards these tasks. This can remove the need for banking, which is especially useful when cutting lower level trees.

Gathering from divine locations does work towards these tasks. However, if you have the Shared Knowledge perk from Memorial to Guthix active, it doesn't count towards the task progress.

Other tasks[edit | edit source]

Elite Dungeons[edit | edit source]

Completing Elite Dungeons in story mode counts for this task.

Kill Monsters[edit | edit source]

The monsters in Lumbridge Catacombs such as corpse spiders can be killed at an extremely fast rate using the smoke devil familiar with Smoke Devil scroll (Dust Cloud)s. The lesser demon deacon familiar with the Lesser Demon scroll (Ring of Fire)s can also be used to greatly increase kills per hour.

Alternatively, dagannoth within the Lighthouse can be quickly killed with area-of-effect weapons and abilities. Dagannoth are always aggressive regardless of combat level and have relatively lucrative seed drops. By using melee armour, a halberd-range weapon, a demon horn necklace, and the auto-collect function of the seedicide, both Prayer and combat tasks can be quickly completed without much effort while also making a modest profit. If aggression ceases, simply climb the southern ladder and exit through the western door, and run to the southernmost point of the room. Upon re-entering, the dagannoth in the area will be aggressive again. Similarly, though lower risk and lower reward, bandits at the Bandit Camp will never cease aggression if the player has a Saradomin or Zamorak item equipped. The best place to kill them is in the bar.

You can also attempt to get champion's scroll if you have not already completed them, as they require killing weak enemies such as zombies that can be easily cannoned. This strategy also works for Prayer tasks as long as the enemy drops ashes or bones.

Play Minigames[edit | edit source]

Points are rewarded based on thaler received. As such it is five times faster to play the games on minigame spotlight for thaler. Playing minigames that do not yield thaler doesn't count for this task.

There are only six minigames for free-to-play, and only three of them yield thaler: Fist of Guthix, The Great Orb Project, and Cabbage Facepunch Bonanza. Fist of Guthix and The Great Orb Project require multiple players, and there are almost never any players at either minigames. Therefore, Cabbage Facepunch Bonanza is often the only viable option. Thaler can be earned without actually playing, as the player only need to spend time in a game; if they do not wish to play, they could simply enter the waiting area, where they would be automatically transported into the arena where they would be eventually eliminated. This requires only a single click (to enter the waiting area) about every 105 seconds (even longer if there are other active players) to gain thaler requiring nearly no attention.

Store[edit | edit source]

Players can purchase the access to premier rewards and task skips from the event interface using bonds.

Package Bond.png Price

Yak Track Task Tokens (4) 1
Yak Track Task Tokens (10) 2

Rewards[edit | edit source]

There are 50 tiers, and players can receive cosmetics and items for progressing through each. Ironman accounts will receive only the cosmetic rewards. Free players will not get members rewards, such as large prismatic lamps or silverhawk down. However, players who later become members will be able to claim any missed rewards. Completing all tiers gives +6% experience in Herblore, Construction, and Archaeology.

If tasks are completed without the premier pass and the player later gains a premier pass, all of the previous premier rewards will automatically unlock.

All weapons and armour received are cosmetic overrides.

To claim the rewards from a tier of the track successfully, you must have enough space in backpack for the rewards.

    • The Yak Track noticeboards have been removed from the game world.
  • patch 14 December 2020 (Update):
    • We're always paying close attention to your feedback to determine how we can make our content better, and Yak Track is no exception! Here's a few of the changes and fixes we've made this time:
      • Task Scaling Adjustments
        • Agility tasks will now allow players to complete any Agility course they meet the level requirement to use, instead of being scaled to the player's level.
        • Similarly, Dungeoneering tasks now allow you to complete any floor you have the level requirement for.
        • The quantity of items required for Herblore and Crafting tasks no longer scale based on your level - all players must now carry out the same number of actions.
        • Quantities required for Herblore tasks have been significantly reduced, bringing down the cost of completing them.
        • Summoning tasks are now less restrictive and allow you to create a wider range of pouches.
      • Gain XP Tasks
        • Construction tasks have been replaced with a 'Gain Construction XP' task, allowing players to progress as they choose.
        • Archaeology restoration tasks have been replaced with a generic 'Gain Archaeology XP' task.
        • Smithing tasks have been replaced by a 'Gain Smithing XP' task, allowing players to smith efficiently while making progress.
      • New Tasks
        • Present Hunt (This Track Only): A new kind of task where you're asked to track down presents all over Gielinor using a set of Magical jingle bells.
        • Earn Marks of War: A new type of combat task that'll see you killing bosses and collecting Marks of War.
      • Miscellaneous Task Improvements
