Achievements (previously known as Tasks and Achievement Diaries) are standalone challenges which players may complete in order to earn rewards. The achievements system consists of achievements grouped under the categories listed below. Each category may contain subcategories and those subcategories may contain subsubcategories. There are 8 categories, 142 subcategories, and 38 subsubcategories.

There is a total of 3,203 achievements in RuneScape, of which 14 are hidden achievements that have their details hidden until achieved and of which 919 are hidden achievements that have their details hidden until the previous achievement in the chain is achieved.

To access the achievements system, players can click on the Hero Hero (ribbon bar) icon.png icon in their interface. In Legacy mode, players need to click the Settings icon to access this. Doing so will bring up the Hero interface. By opening the achievements tab, a player can view an overview of the achievements (including the Path System), list of all achievements, and a tracker for achievements. On the third tab in the lower left corner, players can view the Milestone achievements.

In addition to any rewards received from completing an achievement, the player is awarded between 5 and 75 RuneScore. There are 677 achievements which award 0 RuneScore. All achievements combined give a maximum RuneScore of 30,795.

Achievements categories[edit | edit source]

Skills[edit | edit source]

The Skills category list milestones in each of the skills. Most skills also have their own subcategories for achievements related to that skill. The Skilling Pets subcategory list achievements for obtaining each of the skilling pets and the titles for obtaining those.

Exploration[edit | edit source]

The Exploration category contains achievements which are based around various areas of the game, asking players to complete a variety of achievements around these zones.

Area Tasks[edit | edit source]

The Area Tasks category, previously known as "Achievement Diaries", contains achievements which are based around various areas of the game, asking players to complete a variety of achievements around these areas. All of the subcategories in this category offer special rewards for completing the meta-achievement regarding the area. These rewards are a special wearable items, experience lamps, and various bonuses in the specific area. Additionally, most achievements in this category are split into one of five difficulty types: Beginner, Easy, Medium, Hard, or Elite. Only Lumbridge has a beginner level and no elite level, since it was the original starting area.

Combat[edit | edit source]

The Combat category contains achievements which are based around various kinds of combat, varying from fighting bosses solo, in groups, reaching specific kill count, collecting the boss pets, or general achievements related to combat. These achievements are all grouped per boss or collection of bosses.

Lore[edit | edit source]

The Lore category contains achievements which are based around lore related achievements including quests, miniquests, post-quest activities, etc.

Activities[edit | edit source]

The Activities category contains achievements which are related to the minigames, distractions & diversions, and other miscellaneous achievements.

Completionist[edit | edit source]

The Completionist category lists achievements for the max cape, Quest Cape, master quest cape, completionist cape, trimmed completionist cape, master max cape, master completionist cape and the trimmed master completionist cape.

This is the only category that has no subcategories.

Feats[edit | edit source]

The Feats category lists various feats including boss collection logs, slayer collection logs, treasure trail collection logs, player-owned farm animals with the ravensworn trait, etc.

Grace[edit | edit source]

The Grace category lists achievements which are technically required for the master quest cape, completionist cape, and/or trimmed completionist cape, but do not count as a requirement until its grace period ends, after which the requirement actually takes effect.

History[edit | edit source]

  • The first achievement set (Karamja) was released on 8 May 2007. It was originally named an Achievement Diary and had three difficulty levels: Easy, Medium, and Hard. The interface resembled that of the quest list and was actually a sub-menu of the Quest Tab. As with quests, each diary turned green once completed. Achievement diaries were later split into a separate interface tab, merged into the Noticeboard tab, and eventually put in the Hero interface in the New Interface System.
  • A total of six more Achievement Diaries were later released. The Ardougne Tasks, released on 20 October 2009, was the first set to have a fourth difficulty level, Elite. Elite Tasks were added to most other areas on 7 September 2010.
  • On 24 November 2010, the system of Achievement Diaries was changed into the Task system. The interface was redesigned, extra rewards were added, and more tasks (not considered to be part of the Lumbridge and Draynor Tasks set) were released for the Lumbridge area, meant as an introduction to the Tasks system for new players. Since then, more tasks have been periodically added to this generic set. Many of these "Miscellaneous" tasks are very simple to complete (e.g. Use the "Run" feature) and as such have a Beginner difficulty level.
  • On 19 September 2012 the Task System was renamed Achievements.
  • On 18 April 2017 the interface was reworked to include the skills, combat, and completionist achievements too instead of just exploration achievements.
  • On 29 August 2017 the interface was further reworked, adding a new system called RuneScore to track the player's achievement progress, adding new categories and achievements, and fixing numerous complaints with the previous overhaul.
  • On 2 November 2020 the Achievement System was reworked again mainly to optimise the code under the hood. However, it also included a lot of swapping around of achievements between categories, adding a lot of new categories, subcategories, and subsubcategories. The master quest cape, completionist cape, and trimmed completionist cape no longer had their own subcategories, but players could still monitor their progress by clicking on the respective achievement to see a list of required achievements which were previously listed in a subcategory. Each achievement now belongs to one category, subcategory, or subsubcategory. Completed achievements as well as entire completed subcategories and subsubcategories are (optionally) hidden when completed.
