Vanity edit keeps being undone[edit source]

There seems to be a person quite interested in having a name in the hall of heros or something, because I keep removing it from the trivia section and he/she keeps re-adding non-relevant info there (who has 200M xp in prayer first. WTH?). Can anyone help with this?-- BURNTICEJ 19:44, 29 August 2009 (UTC)

Maybe it's too late for me to point this out, but according to RS:PLAYER this is the kind of trivia we include. Stewbasic 17:06, October 20, 2011 (UTC)
I am moving the mentions of high scores to Trivia because it's something "outside" the game. Pokemama (talk) 13:07, November 11, 2015 (UTC)

steel skin[edit source]

Does it work as defence against every kind of combat style (so will it reduce chance of getting hit by range and magic as well)?

Yes, but not as well against magic or ranged as against melee - I remember reading somewhere that magic/ranged defence is 20% down to your defence level, and 80% down to your magic level, so I'd guess it applies to prayer bonuses too (therefore the actual defence boost for magic/ranged is about 3%). minimum exp[edit source]

Is there a point of stating the minimum exp to be ranked, that will never be accurate it would change almost constantly, Saying lvl 44 would suffice enough for people? Moshkin Khan 20:20, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

Using jobs to train[edit source]

Sorry for the terrible format of the edit on this subject. Just wanted to say that there may be better people to use than the prayer tutor as she does occassionally ask for bones to be burried which take time. I don't have time myself to check this out but someone might want to. I would also apprieciate it if someone would reword the addition to the main page, thanks, serenity1137

Colour[edit source]

No offense intended at all to Hyenaste, but I think those colours in the table look just awful. Can we please stick with standard wiki styling?

I personally think the colors draw your eye. Please remember to sign ^_^. (Jdogy15 03:20, 18 August 2008 (UTC))

Drain Rates[edit source]

I collected all this raw data on how long it takes different prayers to use certain amounts of prayer points. These were all done with no prayer bonus from armor. Most of the times are how long it took to use 10 prayer but there are a couple of exceptions. I'm going to calculate how long each takes to drain 1 prayer and put those in the prayer articles now. --Wowbagger421 22:48, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

  • thick skin 10 prayer 1:54
  • burst of str 10 prayer 1:58
  • clear thought 10 prayer 2:02
  • sharp eye 10 prayer 2:13
  • mystic will 10 prayer 2:12
  • rock skin 10 prayer 1:05
  • super str 10 prayer 1:01
  • imp reflex 10 prayer 1:02
  • rapid restore 5 prayer 2:50
  • rapid heal 10 prayer 3:03
  • protect item 10 prayer 3:02
  • hawk eye 10 prayer 1:00
  • steel skin 10 prayer 0:30
  • protect melee 50 prayer 2:30

i think most of the drain rates posted in the article are wrong, the game "ticks" every .6 seconds, and thats when it will drain prayers, so all the prayer consumption should be in .6's not 1/10s of a second Masterx3829 13:22, August 12, 2010 (UTC)

A questions and a comment[edit source]

Dragonfire[edit source]

Will protect from prayer negate fires spit out by dragons? ---- Eduhello (who forgot to sign)

I assume you mean "Protect from Magic" prayer. The dragon fire is not a magic attack but a real flame. So it is not protected by the prayer. XDRAGONAITE +Saradomin's Book of Wisdom.png 09:59, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

If oyu protect from Magic, dragonfire can be protected from, but it cannot be used in conjuction with an antifire shiled to provide full immunity. JaGeX announced they fixed this bug but apparently they havent. You can test this by "no-iteming" and fighting a green dragon. The message " your prayer protects you from the dragons breath" Should appear. -- Eggman2099 :-)

The formula[edit source]

(That is, here.) Since when did protect-from prayers reduce damage 'received'? Hasn't it always been prayer reduces the likelihood of receiving damage - i.e. raises defence against that combat style?

If it does reduce damage (not increase defence) then a few articles need to be changed (to include this fact, since only a few armours reduce damage taken). Quest.png Gaz Lloyd 7:^]Events!99s 22:54, 22 December 2008 (UTC)
Erm. As i understand it from the very runescape site, the "Protect from xxx" series does reduce damage and does not affect the likelyhood of being hit (when it comes to player vs player combat). Just read it from [ This Runescape Official site link] ;) -- BURNTICEJ 19:53, 29 August 2009 (UTC)

It does indeed reduce damage. Think about games like Fist of Guthix where while standing at the center of the area the defence of the hunted is virtually zero. With and without prayer they will be hit everytime, however with the prayer they will survive much longer.--Tharkon 22:43, October 1, 2009 (UTC)

Individual pages for prayers[edit source]

Is it truly necessary to have an individual article for each prayer? Isn't the exact same information provided in this main article?

Another thing; the "drain rate" values and the formula for it is just overall confusing.

--Uular 03:05, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

Yes, per RuneScape:Granularity.
Which bit of the drain rate/formula part is confusing you? Quest.png Gaz Lloyd 7:^]Events!99s 17:52, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
"Each point of prayer bonus adds 3.33333% (or 10%/3) seconds to the drain rate. "
Firstly, what the hell is "3.33333% seconds"? 1/30 of a second? 3.333 seconds?
"For example, with a +15 prayer bonus, Protect from Melee, with a drain rate of 1 point every 3 seconds, will instead drain 1 point every 4.5 seconds, as a +15 prayer bonus will slow the drain rate by 50%."
Wait, how did you come up to that? Oh um... 3+3*(15*(1/30))? Well that makes sense... But why? What? Slows the drain rate by 50%? No, by a third.
My suggestion: The part about prayer bonus<->Drain rate section should be clarified with a better example, showing an actual formula of calculation your drain rate.
--Uular 19:35, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
Okay. I reworded that paragraph to:
"Each point of prayer bonus slows the drain rate by 3⅓% of the prayer(s) rate. For example, if a player uses Protect from melee with a prayer bonus of 0, their prayer points will drain at a rate of 1 point every 3 seconds. If that player then equips armour giving a prayer bonus of +15, the drain rate of protect from melee is slowed by 3⅓%×15=50%, so the drain rate becomes 3+(3×50%)=4.5, that is 1 point per 4.5 seconds.
"A prayer bonus of +30 halves the drain rate of prayers - i.e. prayer points will last twice as long."
I think that's a little clearer; hope you agree. Quest.png Gaz Lloyd 7:^]Events!99s 20:41, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
Just cobbled together a genral formula aswell: "prayer drain rate × (1 + (3⅓% × prayer bonus))" Quest.png Gaz Lloyd 7:^]Events!99s 21:01, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
Good job there! The term prayer drain rate however is unclear on what it actually means, as the prayer table lists the drain rates in the form 1 point per x seconds. It should be made clear to readers, exactly which value they should input when calculating their drain rate; aswell as which form the output is in. --Uular 21:09, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
Done! and I added an equals sign to the equation. Glad to be of assistance =] Quest.png Gaz Lloyd 7:^]Events!99s 21:24, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
How about "prayer drain rate × (1 + [prayer bonus] / 30)" this takes the percentage out and gives the same effect but its simpler --Masterx3829 14:11, August 12, 2010 (UTC)

Actually, the formula make sense at all, 'cause nothing in RuneScape can happen in intervals that aren't multiples of 0.6 seconds. This has been confirmed by Andrew in the Game Feedback forum and is explained in the article RuneScape clock. --Tharkon 17:31, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

Are the GIFs needed[edit source]

As I was browsing this page, I noticed a large amount of GIF images, or the animated ones. I don't think that all of them are necessary, but some will help.
Some that should NOT be GIFs:

  • Alter praying.
  • Overhead prayers.
  • Grave blessing.

The rest to me are somewhat okay. What does everyone think?--~MuzTalk 20:47, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

I agree. They are not needed. -- BURNTICEJ 19:44, 29 August 2009 (UTC)

Altar prayer, aggreed. Grave blessing, is already PNG now. Overhead prayers now show all available overhead prayers in one image though, so without animation that would require multiple images, a bigger image or loss of information.--Tharkon 17:01, May 28, 2010 (UTC)

Possible new theory on prayer[edit source]

I have a theory that if you use any of the protect from prayers, your hitpoints stop regenerating while these prayers are being used. Can someone also verify this to be certain? I experienced this problem while fighting jellies, while I was using the protect from melee prayer on Jelly, my hitpoints would NOT regenerate while I was fighting these creatures, yet this took place for several minutes.-- 19:53, 17 May 2009 (UTC)

Tested and proven wrong, something else must have been affecting the healing rate. --Tharkon 17:22, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

Impossible[edit source]

Controversy over prayer flashing[edit source]

I'm occasionally faced with criticism when I prayer flash, as many players say "you know, that's against the rules." I admit it's a pretty "cheap" tactic, but is it against the rules? -- Addy Tux  03:54, December 21, 2009 (UTC)

Some players make think it's bug abuse, but prayer flashing is not against the rules. (Holy Taquito 03:57, December 21, 2009 (UTC))

Ancient Bones[edit source]

On the table of bones and experience they give when buried, there arent ancient bones on it. My apologies if there is a reason for this, but just thought id point it out.

Thanks --Unsigned

I think a lot of people don't know about [[Ancient bones (quest)]] yet, I only learned recently but I already forgot how much exp they give. They probably should be added, with exp, the means to acquire them, the message they are not re-obtainable and the message they cannot be used with exp-boosting methods safe for the Bonus XP weekend.--Tharkon 17:06, May 28, 2010 (UTC)

drain rate #2n[edit source]

i notice a few things wrong with this page:

piety lasts for 1.8 seconds (good) but then it says it lasts 2.25 with halo. how it this possible... someone did their math wrong 4/3 * 1.8 = 2.4 which also matches up with a game tick

rigour, sou split and turmoil all say 1 every 2 seconds.... again how is this possible, a game tick is .6 seconds ideally, ill bet the 2 seconds came from server lag and this should be changed to 1.8 seconds

agaiin with the fail math: 4/3 * 2 does not equal 3 seconds and because it is actually 1.8 seconds it should be changed to 2.4 for same reason as piety

chivalry why does halo not affect this? if halo affect turm and piety why would it not affect this?

all stat boosting prayers (burst of strength, mystic will, eagle eye, ultimate strength etc) should have a halo reduction too should they not? according to the website it says the a halo will affect certain melee boosts depending on what halo and what boost (ie zamorak boosts strength) as well as all ranged and magic boosts

curses have same problem, where is the boost for the leech curses? i know for sure jagex couldnt have forgotten about those 02:48, February 7, 2011 (UTC)

fool proof method for prayer times[edit source]

ive changed the prayer times several times now ans dumb people keep reverting them back

according to the runescape clock and game tick, the cannon rotates 45 degrees every tick, or .6 at optimum, using this i will figure out how much time between each drain usage for the non tick intervals, i have a halo and from that i will also figure out once and for all what the halo drain decrease is

if you deel that i am wrong, TRY FOR YOURSELF BEFORE EDITING Masterx3829 01:25, February 21, 2011 (UTC)

so far the halo on certain prayers sems to vary and not be a constant drain % decrease

im using zammy halo running at 44 fps (more than enough) minimal lag

without halo with halo % (no halo/with halo)
leech str 3.6 6.0 .6
sap melee 2.4 3.6 - 4.2 2/3 - 4/7
sap range 2.4 3.6 - 4.2 2/3 - 4/7
leech atk 3.6 6.0 .6
thick skin 12 12 1
burst of strength 12 18 2/3
clarity of thought 12 12 1
ultimate str 3 3.6 - 4.2 5/6 - 6/7
mystic might 3 4.2 7/5
hawk eye 6 9 2/3

  • note i couldnt get piety or chivalry because it was too fast =\ however they do appear to be affected

anyone want to interpret this data? feel free, also feel free to edit upon it if you trust it cuz im tired of ppl reverting my edits >.> Masterx3829 03:16, February 21, 2011 (UTC)

add(ition) prayer armour[edit source]

At the list with Prayer Armour and Weapons, there seems to be something that's forgotten/missing. Namely, the Broodoo Shields and God books (they have a prayer stat-bonus of 5 after-all, and in that respect equal to the Falador shield 2). Sorry I can´t do, I tried. And I screwed up. So, could some-one else maybe fix the table? Much thanks, 22:25, May 17, 2011 (UTC)

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to add videos/links to videos directly to the article but I found 2 very good tutorials with two distinct methods of flash praying, one which is not mentioned here and definitely deserves to be. I think it's a lot clearer with visuals instead of just a description. If someone in charge could give permission to add them that'd be great.

Evolution of combat prayer drain rates[edit source]

I think the drain rate of prayers has changed following the proper release of Evolution of Combat. Firstly, Piety, Rigous and Augury all drain by the same rate, and all of their rates have changed to 0.3pts/sec when a 0 prayer bonus. I strongly suspect other prayers have also had their rates changed. Secondly, prayer bonus itself seems to have less effect on drain rate. It took me 216secs to drain 720 prayer points with 0 prayer bonus with a Piety (0.3) prayer in the EoC version. In the old RS, a prayer bonus of +15 would have extended that time to 324secs on a prayer of similar starting drain rate (0.3PP/sec). In EoC, using the newly rated Piety with +15 prayer bonus, it took 254secs to drain all my prayer. Something's changed. 22:20, November 22, 2012 (UTC)

New EOC prayers missing

Someone should add Leech Ranged Strength, Leech Magical Strength, Anguish and Torment to the table.

Drygore mace[edit source]

Should replace this with d mace on best mems pray bonuses list, yes? +4 points moar as such now

Definition of Prayer[edit source]

There current definition, in the first sentence, seems of poor quality: "Prayer is a skill that allows players to use prayer(s) to generate advantages in combat".

I'd recommend something like "Prayer is a skill which grants certain buffs to combat". I think there is more to be added to that, but saying "Prayer is a skill to use prayers" is bad form- redundant and uninformative.

The above definition could certainly be improved (which is why I don't just make the edit directly), especially because it makes no reference to doors in Daemonheim, nor to the blessing of gravestones. Some reference to the gods might also be appropriate, though in practice such a connection only exists in the lore and storyline, not in the day to day use of prayer.

Any thoughts?

Aleximoros (talk) 05:30, September 18, 2013 (UTC)

I agree with you on the point that its current introduction could definitely be improved. I think something like "Prayer is a skill which grants the player specialised buffs in combat by evoking the power of certain gods in RuneScape." could work, although feel free to adapt that to your own style - it's your edit after all. You could make a brief mention of gravestones if you like, although I wouldn't include the reference to Daemonheim due to how minor it is in the grand scheme of things. One-leaf clover necklace[edit source]

I've found that if you receive the boost to prayer via this, it raises your actual prayer level by +5(+4 when the buff wears off, but it then reapplies) for 30 minutes. Allowing you up to 1196/1040 prayer points when used in conjunction with the Senntisten temples altar. I'm not sure this is useful or relevant info in anyway but figured it might be helpful to know. EngelNacht (talk) 09:42, November 17, 2013 (UTC)

Guys, am I the only one who's bugged with prayer bonus exp from bird and the beast??

I just used around 50k bonus exp, but the only xp that effectively got to my prayer xp pool is the real one. In other words: I used up all my bonus xp for no bonus xp at all, if it makes any sense.

Could someone help me? Is my bonus xp lost? >: 02:10, December 17, 2013 (UTC)Kaerodor

How many bones???[edit source]

Hey guys,

I was just wondering how many bone's it's going to take me to level up from 23 to 30 in prayer. I have realised that it takes quite some time just using normal bones.. and I was wondering if using altars would help??

Please give me ideas :')

'Thanks xo '(WonkyCarrot (talk) 03:10, July 9, 2014 (UTC))

Let's see... the experience needed from 22-30 is 7,739 experience. Normal bones give 4.5 experience when buried and 15.75 on a gilded altar with both burners lit, so you'd need 1,720 and 491 bones respectively.
I'd say using an altar would definitely help if you're sticking to normal bones. Alternatively you could use big bones (the easiest source is hill giants iirc) which give 15 experience when buried or 52.5 on a gilded altar, for 516 and 147 big bones needed.
Hope all this helps. Small recharge gem.png AnselaJonla Slayer-icon.png 03:17, July 9, 2014 (UTC)

Prayer bonus effect research.[edit source]

Prayer bonus data

Duration - Duration in seconds - Prayer bonus - % Duration increase - % Increase per prayer point

1:38 - 98 - +0 - Base duration with no bonuses

1:49 - 109 - +9 - +11.2% - 1.24%

2:09 - 129 - +24 - +31.6% - 1.32%

2:33 - 153 - +36 - +56.1% - 1.56%

3:41 - 221 - +55 - +125.5% - 2.28%

Prayers used: Turmoil + soul split + item protect Starting prayer points: 990

Data from official wiki

"This is calculated as (drain rate / 100) * (100 - prayer bonus).

For example, if you have a Amulet of glory, with a prayer bonus of 3, equipped and you cast Thick Skin your new prayer drain rate will be 0.97 instead of 1."

In other words, the duration is increased to (duration * 100) / (100 - prayer bonus).

Applying this formula to the above tests:

Base duration: 98 seconds

+9 bonus: (98 * 100) / (100 - 9) = 107.6

+24 bonus:(98 * 100) / (100 - 24) = 128.9

+36 bonus:(98 * 100) / (100 - 36) = 153.1

+55 bonus:(98 * 100) / (100 - 55) = 217.7

The values are very close to the measures above.
