Can Farming level be boosted (or other stats) to make the staff?

This item is NOT lendable. Please fix.

Fixed. sssSp7p.pngIjLCqFF.png 18:59, November 28, 2011 (UTC)

Can be partially recharged with 5 fire runes and 1 of the moss stuff, per charge.

Max hit[edit source]

I doubt the staff can hit 950 on a slayer task.

Having been fighting with Ahrims robe top and legs, polypore staff, mage's book, infinity boots, arcane stream and wolpertinger boosts I didn't see myself hit over 510.

Sounds like someones trying to raise the price?

Lacesso 18:56, November 28, 2011 (UTC)

No idea, but I changed it to 510 for you. sssSp7p.pngIjLCqFF.png 18:59, November 28, 2011 (UTC)
I was off task, so I've removed the bit about slayer task. Lacesso 19:05, November 28, 2011 (UTC)
My max Hit with arcane stream necklace and wolpertinger was 519 (no slay task)

The animal staves have a higher prayer bonus than this staff at +6, so i'm removing that part about having the best prayer bonus from the article.Mofo Pr0 00:38, November 29, 2011 (UTC)

How did the max hit become 672? 315 (99 magic base max hit) * (13% (staff) + 21% (Extreme magic/Wolpertinger/overload) + 15% (Hexcrest) + 15% (Arcane stream)) + 40 (ferocious ring) = 556.6 --Void Knight 13:41, November 30, 2011 (UTC)

Per the actual formula: (350 base at lv106)*(1.21 ext/wolper)*(1+0.13+0.15 staff+asn)*(1.15 hex)+40 (fero) = 663. Corrected on the page, unless there's evidence/an image of otherwise. Quest.png Gaz Lloyd 7:^]Events!99s 13:54, November 30, 2011 (UTC)
All slayer headgear should have a multiplicative effect of 7/6, not 1.15. - Obliv / Oblivion590, 18:30, November 30, 2011 (UTC)
Why would it be 7/6 ? --Henneyj 18:50, November 30, 2011 (UTC)
Oh yes of course, I knew that. derp. That does indeed give 672. Quest.png Gaz Lloyd 7:^]Events!99s 20:55, November 30, 2011 (UTC)
Hey. You. I asked a question. --Henneyj 21:09, November 30, 2011 (UTC)
7/6 is a more accurate representation of a hexcrest's damage boost than 16.66. --Andorin (Talk) (Contribs) 21:13, November 30, 2011 (UTC)
But why is it 7/6 and not 15%? --Henneyj 21:17, November 30, 2011 (UTC)
Why does the poly staff alch for 120k coins? Because that's what Jagex set it to. --Andorin (Talk) (Contribs) 21:18, November 30, 2011 (UTC)
That doesn't explain anything. I thought a hexcrest boosts by 15% --Henneyj 21:38, November 30, 2011 (UTC)
Talk:Magic Damage#Formula. We have done tests which are pretty conclusive, and obliv has done similar for melee and ranged with similar results. Quest.png Gaz Lloyd 7:^]Events!99s 22:01, November 30, 2011 (UTC)
Sorry, I didn't know that the level boosts, staff and necklace boosts, and the hexcrest boost are added mutiplicatively. --Void Knight 13:59, November 30, 2011 (UTC)

I am pretty sure the max hit currently listed under perfect slayer task conditions is wrong, I looked through the history and saw it was once listed at 672 but was changed to 702 here I have hit 672 a couple times while slaying and it was a golden hit and my hits have never exceed that. When I slay I slay with with the best magic damage boosts available (exactly what is listed in that section of the page) and I keep my magic level at a constant 106 through the use of a wolpertinger and a timer. If it is right could someone please tell me where the extra 30 damage comes from? If no one knows then I am going to change it back to 672.  Summoning-icon.png Sci (talk) Enhanced Excalibur.png 19:47, January 13, 2012 (UTC)

hi my mage lvl is 80+6 with with boost from skull of vecna an i can hit 316 with the staff without any damage boost while not on a slayer task. 02:43, June 18, 2012 (UTC)b3ast

This article is unclear[edit source]

Does the staff unlock the use of a new spell? If not, does it save runes when used with other spells? --Andorin (Talk) (Contribs) 04:23, November 29, 2011 (UTC)

It is a spell that is used while the staff is equipped. Rather than inside a spellbook, it's activated the same way that a player attacks with melee or ranged.Shadow silk hood.png Elysian Aura Lord marshal cap.png 04:29, November 29, 2011 (UTC)

What's the spell called, and if we don't have an article on it, why not? --Andorin (Talk) (Contribs) 04:30, November 29, 2011 (UTC)
Never mind, I just bought a staff. It doesn't unlock an actual spell, like Fire Surge or Magic Dart. No runes used; apparently it expends its spore charges to cast. It can do Accurate or Longranged, which give Magic and Magic + Defence XP respectively. --Andorin (Talk) (Contribs) 04:42, November 29, 2011 (UTC)
I've tested the staff a bit, and I'm adding what I've observed to the article. So far I am extremely impressed with what I've seen. --Andorin (Talk) (Contribs) 04:54, November 29, 2011 (UTC)
Extremely overpowered, you mean. --Void Knight 05:30, November 29, 2011 (UTC)
Magic has needed something "overpowered" for a long time, and this staff actually makes it a viable combat style for Slayer. I don't see this as a bad thing at all. --Andorin (Talk) (Contribs) 09:13, November 29, 2011 (UTC)
I like using magic combat and has longed to see a spell that relies on a staff rather than runes, but I think it would be better to have something that makes maging more useful in general. I think this is going to render normal spells obsolete except for a few situations. --Void Knight 10:22, November 29, 2011 (UTC)
How exactly does this staff not make maging more useful in general? It hits harder, it's more accurate, and it's significantly more cost-effective than conventional spells. --Andorin (Talk) (Contribs) 11:16, November 29, 2011 (UTC)

Save it for the forums guys. Also, you gotta remember it's only useful to those mages that are already overpowered thanks to the 80 Magic requirement. Kingofdanerds 17:31, November 29, 2011 (UTC)

80 Magic alone doesn't make a mage overpowered. Also, "save it for the forums"? Suppa chuppa Talk 17:31, November 29, 2011 (UTC)
Much like how chaotic weapons are only useful to those warriors who are already overpowered thanks to the 80 Attack requirement? --Andorin (Talk) (Contribs) 21:27, November 29, 2011 (UTC)

The article also forgets to mention how pretty it is!!!!!! i wants -droolz- Xhanort7 22:33, November 29, 2011 (UTC)

This staff won't make rune based spells useless, if anything this staff offers nothing but good news for magic. Because the staff's attack is much cheaper than rune based spells more people will use it and less people will buy runes causing runes to dip in price. The way i see it is this staff will make magic in general lower in price which is much needed seeing as how at the current moment somebody would have to be insanely rich to be a 'mage' at all times.Mofo Pr0 03:51, November 30, 2011 (UTC)

Agreed. --Andorin (Talk) (Contribs) 03:55, November 30, 2011 (UTC)
You have a point, Mofo Pr0. However, this hurts the runecrafters, and they deserve to have a good money-making method with their hard-earned levels. --Void Knight 13:35, November 30, 2011 (UTC)
Uh, the fact that you have a high level in a skill does not mean that you are entitled to profit from it. --Andorin (Talk) (Contribs) 21:12, November 30, 2011 (UTC)

Does this do bonus damage against Ice Strykeworms?

Tested 1,000 charges with full range void and it DOES NOT give a damage bonus, my max hit was the same with and without void range. I am quite sure it doesn't boost accuracy, either. I found myself hitting a lot more accurately with ganodermic armour.

My Runecrafting level is among my lowest at 55, so I’m not complaining for myself. I just wanted to say that Runecrafting is a very slow and monotonous skill to train and should have suitable benefits for balancing. --Void Knight 02:00, December 3, 2011 (UTC)

Dagganoth mother comments[edit source]

The damage to the Dagannoth mothers is not unique to the polypore staff. I have previously reported this as a glitch with the release of the dominion tower, whereby Fire Surge (with or without ANY staff) would continue to do damage while the mother is green (vulnerable only to range). Could someone confirm my statement and adjust the wiki article accordingly? Thankyou.

Wow Good job Jagex you made a new pure weapon. Pures are going to make new accounts get 99 mage and one hit people  —The preceding unsigned comment was added by (talk) on 21:18, December 7, 2011.

Isn't that a good thing that magic is more powerful now? The combat triangle is horribly misbalanced. Achievements Coelacanth0794 Talk Contribs 21:31, December 7, 2011 (UTC)

~~The Polypore Stick scam~~

If many of you havn't already realised the polypore stick is droping in GE prices very fast and no body is buying them or at least you can't sell them under a mill of GE Guide price.Well scince the prices on them are fairly high that makes them a whanted "rare".Once people buy the stick and see how useless it is and how crazy the prices are on them they whant to get the money back. This is how they do it.

Hey ill give you 3m for your armour and weapon.

Accepted trade request.

Why do you whant my armour and weapon when you clearly have somthing worth way more than what i got?

Oh i whant to do pvp and those items arnt buying at guide priCe.

Oh ok.

Trade accepted.

Yes I only know about this becuase i happend to me.So becarefull what you trade it might not be what you whant even if you get the item.

Does attack count as fire spell?[edit source]

The Polypore staff is charged using fire runes. Does it attack then count as a fire spell? It might - I tried it out against 80 iron dragons, which are weak to fire spells, and I mowed them down faster than I can using fire surge. Inelcirc 15:54, December 21, 2011 (UTC)

Degraded explanation wrong?[edit source]

Is the explanation about becoming degraded wrong? It says:

'Players can also use this staff to cast other spells (such as Ancient Magicks), however the staff will become "Polypore staff (degraded)" - it will still have all of its charges left.'

However, it seems to me that the staff becomes degraded on its first normal combat use.Inelcirc 12:02, January 1, 2012 (UTC)

I have just recharged a staff and checked out what happens: it becomes degraded on its first normal combat use. I will update the article to reflect this. Inelcirc 13:36, January 9, 2012 (UTC)

The staffs magic damage boost?[edit source]

there are three things that effect the staff's max hit are as follows

  1. Wearing gear with magic damage boost%
  2. Increasing magical level higher then base magical level
  3. The staffs max hit according to magic level

I noticed that the staff has a table that masures max hits based on a specific level, this creates a delema, WHEN you drink a magic potion at 99 magic, and your magic level increases to 104, Does the 15% magic damage apply to the staff's 99 magic level base hit of 315? or does the base hit increase since the magic level is no longer 99 but is 104? if the base hit increases and the 5 levels boost your magic damage by 15% this could be the highest hitting magic spell in game. if with every level the staff does 5 more damage, then with 104 magic, the base hit should be 315+25=340. 340 * (1.13+0.15+0.17) = 493 max mage hit in pvp

My eyes glazed over trying to read this, but this discussion on magic damage should answer some of your questions. --Henneyj 15:15, January 13, 2012 (UTC)

Absolute Maximum Hit[edit source]

In the Fight Kiln, if you use a magic crystal, this weapon has an extremely high max hit.

((315+(5x49))1.28)(.03x49) ends up being a maximum of roughly 1053. Would this be worthwhile trivia?

To explain, 315 is the base maximum at 99. The magic crystal boosts by 49 at level 99, which adds an additional 245 base damage (an extra 5 damage per level boosted), then we're assuming a 28% damage boost from equipment - polypore staff and arcane stream necklace - and then you get the 3% boost for each of the 49 levels boosted. Talk about packing one heck of a punch.

I've seen f2p players use the Polypore staff to PK in the wild. Does this make this item f2p? -Andrew

About the max hit... Again[edit source]

Wouldn't the max hit of the staff be higher if on a Tz-haar/Volcanic Creatures task from Kuradal, if you have the Tokkul-Zo? I'm pretty sure that a 10% damage boost is larger than a boost of 40 under those conditions. Mad Rubicante (talk) 20:27, August 9, 2012 (UTC)

I know it's stupid, but I cleaned my polypore in hopes of getting half of the supplies back. I got my spores but not the fire runes?? I'm a sad puppy. 04:36, August 10, 2012 (UTC)Sad Puppy.

Looks like they removed prayer bonus from polypore staffs,

can enione edit that part out ? And it seems like it has same stats as staff of light.
