Hover your mouse over a pile of coins. It says "Coins". :| Shadowdancer 18:55, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
Gold pieces was the proper way back in RSC, though. :) Oddlyoko 18:56, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
Ooh, that's before my time. OF course, if you examine a pile of coins, it says "Lovely money!" Woodcutting-icon.pngHyenastetalk 19:00, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
Was gold pieces ever actual runescape terminology, or is that just a player introduced thing. I've always thought that we need to refer to Coins rather than Gold pieces, of which there seems to be no mention in the current game? --Eucarya 22:18, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
The dwarf who you buy ale yeast from in Kedlagrim refers to his payment as "25 GP". As far as I'm aware, this is the only use of GP in-game. Mebbe a "Trivia" section with this in...? 21:01, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
Probably an error on Jagex's behalf. Listening to the players are they? Woodcutting-icon.pngHyenastetalk 21:03, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

At the Al-Kharid toll gate, there is an option that says Pay-toll(10gp). -- Couchpotato99 (talk) (contribs) 04:07, 3 September 2006 (UTC)
There's a chance that it was never official, but I'll tell you this much: coins were referred to as GP for as long as I've been playing, and that goes back to 2001 or early 2002. I seem to remember it being used in game a lot back then however (by NPC's, examine info, etc). But I could easily be mistaken, that was a really long time ago.Endasil 03:30, 2 March 2007 (UTC)
  • Suggestion, add images (or a composite image) of the piles of coins - Our own version of RHQ currency guide - It appears there are 10 possible images for a stack of coins, unless we discover others. Perhaps ours should be on a real background. Ace of Risk 22:08, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

Inflation[edit source]

Perhaps we should mention the value of the coin on this page. Woodcutting-icon.pngHyenastetalk 22:50, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

I'm not sure how we can reflect that. A coin is a coin is a coin, after all. Shadowdancer 02:21, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
Links to the economy section or trade might give a hint of the changing value of currency in RuneScape. A coin is a coin, but purchasing power can and does shift.--Curmudgeony 03:36, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

New source for GP[edit source]

From the new parent's guide in the Manual:

RuneScape is a fantasy RPG. Although it is set in a fictional world, many aspects of the game are very familiar. Like the real world, RuneScape has an economy; players can buy and sell items from shops or trade with one another and can even dictate their own prices. The in-game currency is called GP (gold pieces) and allows players to purchase anything they might need to live within the gaming world. If their character loses health, they will need to eat and drink in order to replenish. If a player wants to attempt a more dangerous quest, then they will need better armour and supplies in order to succeed. They can even chop wood, smith nails and weave cloth in order to build and maintain their very own house.

Hmm... JalYt-Xil-Vimescarrot 18:56, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

Note that on all postbag posts, [1], the stamp's pricing is in terms of gp, not coins. I think it's becoming more and more apparent that those that think that "GP" is the spawn of the devil just need to cool it and accept they were wrong...see also User:Endasil#GP vs. Coins Endasil 18:50, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

They say gp all the time in RuneScape Classic as well. Example:
RSC general store.png
. It really doesn't matter. Dtm142 15:55, 18 March 2007 (UTC)

I found another source of the term "GP". In RuneScape: The Official Handbook, there are a couple instances of this term.

On Page 11:

4. Sell Your Stuff. Just like the real world, money makes the RuneScape world go 'round. You can sell just about anything you catch or make to stores or other players. A good way to practice is to kill a chicken in Lumbridge. Chop down a tree, then cook the chicken over a fire. You can eat the cooked chicken of course, or you can sell it to the general store for 1 GP (or gold piece). It's not much, but you can kill and cook more chickens until the GPs add up, and you'll also get experience (known as XP, or experience points, in RuneScape talk)!

And the title of Section 8: More XP Equals More GPs.

10. Get to a Bank. If by some chance your character dies (and it probably will), don't freak out. You will end up in Lumbridge - but any GPs you were carrying will be gone. Keep most of your GPs in a bank and you will have something to fall back on in times of trouble. You can find a bank on the top floor of Lumbridge Castle. Zeldafanjtl 00:28, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

1 BIL[edit source]

You can't actually have 1 bil because 1 billion = 2000000 Million and the maximum is just over 2000 M Skull.pngGalanothwolf(talk) 11:44, October 3, 2009 (UTC)

umm.... No, you're completely wrong. 1 billion is 1000 million, allowing players to have up to about 2.147 billion coins. Just letting you know. Mythomagic5 05:43, October 31, 2009 (UTC)

Who the heck is stupid enough to drop 5k on accident?! Now, im not a mean person, I do nice things on runescape, for example, if I see someones pickaxe head fall off, then ill give it to them if i picked it up, but imo, if there stupid enough drop 5k (and keep in mind they have 1 min to pick it back up agian) then then they probably don't desirve it. Tesfan 02:20, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

As far as im concerned, if there's money, or any other item on the floor then obviously nobody needs it that much, under no circumstances would I return anything I pick up off the floor. 21:47, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

Is it even possible for 5k to appear to other players once dropped?

Vandalism[edit source]

Yeah, I've seen it too. Quite annoying! I think it should be locked to unregistered/new users so they'll have to go vandalize something or somewhere else. Dragon medium helm! Whaddaya know?Chiafriend12Better than rune!Loon is best buttlord 04:16, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

Coin spawns[edit source]

What is the purpose of the coin spawn section? I have a feeling that this section has no real use...half of the places we're listing are so hard or expensive to get to, most players would be losing money by trying to get money there (ex using a 300ish gp law rune to get a few coins using telegrab). Is this supposed to be a money-making strategy? if so, it doesn't belong here, it belongs in the Money Making Guide. If not, then who really cares where this stuff respawns? Coin spawns are NOT a significant source of coins being introduced to Runescape (I'd hazard a guess that spawns contribute around a thousandth of a percent to the net coin count of RS, high alch, shops, and monster drops being the main sources). The Color Of Coins[edit source]

In the recent update the color of the number in coins has changed, 1-99,999 coins is the normal yellow color, 100,000-999,999 coins is an odd White color, 1m-999m coins is a even more weird green color.. 1bil+... Unknown how can we incorporate this?--Alex 17:14, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

This has been incorporated in Truncation which is linked from Coins Endasil (Talk) @ Endasil 17:40, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

White partyhat.png Patcong talk White partyhat.png00:01, 10 August 2007 (UTC) 1-99,999 = yellow 100k - 9,999,999 = white 10,000,000-999,999,999 = green above =red

I'd also like to add clarfication to this. 1 bil+ is rendered as 1000M, which is still green. And the maximum you can have in one single stack is 2147M, so there's no further color (red? A weird color for a stack :P) Icy001 15:25, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

BUt it is. The person is selling Jagex's property since it says in the terms and conditions that they own everything. You don't own your account, you are just using it with their permission. Trivia section[edit source]

Why isn't there a trivia section? for example, knowing that you can't alch coins isn't exactly very useful...

Besides that, there's too much info on the simple coins in the beggining of the article.

stacks[edit source]

wouldn't it be cool if you could split your coins into multiple stacks?

...Wait, what?[edit source]

"However, as with the introduction to the trade limit as well as the Grand Exchange, many of these skills became impossible to solely generate great amounts of money but this also allowed other lesser used skills to be in demand, though requiring very high levels."

This is in the skills section. I've read it over 5 times and still don't really get what it means. Could someone who can understand this reword it?Red dragon face.png YodimonTalk to meh! Coins 10000.png 02:54, June 3, 2010 (UTC)

Means that the Trade Limit ruined skilling for money, mostly because of the decrease of base goods like logs and ore. That happened mostly because of lack of RWTing bots, which supplied a lot of the lower leveled collecting items (logs/flax/fish). And the Grand Exchange made skilling easier, especially at higher levels. This added to the experience-profit gap. Now only a few, lesser used skills are profitable (although now most of them are gone, like smithing). Twiggletz 06:29, June 6, 2010 (UTC)

Moving Coin limit to new article[edit source]

Given the new uprising of debate over the limit on the forums, and the possibility that Jagex may one day rewrite the entire Java code to accomodate a higher limit, it is time we start a separate page on the limit, why it occurs, the solutions, and possible changes to it. A nice piece was written on the calls to raise it, but this was quickly deleted; I will work to place parts of this in the new article. It will be titled "Maximum Gold Coins limit". Feel free to edit and contribute. The article should be done by the end of 5/5/11. Nbhockeyplayer 19:40, May 5, 2011 (UTC)

Negative coin limits?[edit source]

Firstly, the coin limit should be positive only, since it isn't possible to have negative wealth.

Also, should the negative coin limit be correct, it should be -2,147,483,647 which is –(231 – 1) (the floating point of 32 bit systems).
