A steel bar is a metal bar refined through the Smithing skill by smelting one iron ore and one coal together, either using a furnace or the Superheat Item spell. Smelting a steel bar requires a Smithing level of 20 and grants 3 Smithing experience. Steel bars can be smelted 25% and 50% faster beginning at Smithing levels 21 and 23, respectively. Additionally, starting at Smithing level 27, there is a chance of smelting an extra bar without consuming additional ores.

Steel bars can be forged at an anvil into steel equipment. A list of items produced from steel bars and their requirements may be found here.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Players commonly used steel bars to train the Smithing skill, despite being able to smith mithril bars or better, because it required only two pieces of coal and is more affordable, while mithril or better required several more pieces of coal. The Mining and Smithing rework changed this and also removed the possibility of obtaining noted bars in barrels.
