Sound effects are audio clips heard when carrying out various actions. Any user-input that has a correlating sound, will automatically trigger the audio.

Depending on whether the player is using Legacy Mode or Evolution of Combat will determine different audio cues during combat.

The majority of combat abilities have a specific sound matching the animation of the ability with the exception of greater concentrated blast, sunshine, death's swiftness and berserk.

Swapping weapons, dropping an item and gaining a level also have specific audio effects.

The volume of these sound effects may be adjusted through the Audio tab on the Settings screen.

Additionally, one can set the volume of the ambient sounds, which are the sound effects that are produced by the location, pets or other players.

In RuneScape Classic, sound effects were only available for members and were much different than the current ones.

Some sound effects were updated on 18 October 2010. These effects replaced sounds such as woodcutting, mining, and taking damage with new sounds, which are not made from a synthesiser, like all other sounds. Now when a player takes damage which takes away life points a sound effect is played which sounds like a grunt of pain from the character. Should the player subsequently die, two audio cues will trigger, one of the character groaning as they die, and another which overrides any current background music being played.
