Soil can be found when excavating at excavation hotspots and material caches while training Archaeology. Material caches will only yield soil if they are located within a dig site. There are seven different types of soil, one of which is only used during the tutorial. Each dig site yields a unique type of soil that can be used at the screening station in the Varrock Dig Site for a chance at uncovering Archaeology materials along with a 1/1,000 chance to find artefacts.[1] The Sift Soil lunar spell can also be used to screen soil. The chance of obtaining a material increases with the player's Archaeology level.[2] Up to 100 of any one type of soil may be screened at a time. Alternatively the auto-screener v1.080 may be used to screen soil as it is excavated, however using this method will never yield additional artefacts.
The archaeological soil box can initially hold up to 50 of each soil, with upgrades available that increase this capacity to 100, 250, or 500.
Players who have activated the Flow State relic power will not receive any soil when excavating.
Combining one of each tradeable soil (except volcanic ash) with a cup of tea will produce a cup of soil tea, which temporarily boosts Archaeology by +2 levels. This effect does not stack, nor does it appear on the buff bar.

- ^ Mod Rowley. Anachronia sift soil OP?. Reddit. 22 October 2020. (Archived from the original on 22 October 2020.) Mod Rowley: "More likely just a run of good luck. Not everything has to be a spaghetti bug. The chance for an artefact is 1/1k, so that's just over 2x average. I don't know everything about Sift Soil, so it might boost artefact chance (doubt it, but it might). There'll be someone else out there going dry on artefacts for 5k soil. Regardless, we'll do our due diligence and check to be certain."
- ^ Mod Ryan. Archaeology: I would like to buy an upgrade which makes screening soil more worthwhile. Reddit. (Archived from the original on 12 June 2020.) Mod Ryan: "At the early levels the chance is indeed low, however the chance of receiving a material from soil increases as you level up."
