This article is about the sawmill operator in Varrock. For for other sawmill operators, see Sawmill operator (disambiguation).

Bill the Sawmill operator can be found along the southern wall of the Varrock Lumber Yard, at the Sawmill map icon.png icon on the minimap. He can turn four kinds of logs into planks (see sawmill), and also runs a Construction Supplies shop selling bolts of cloth, three kinds of nails, and saws. He will not accept noted logs, but noted special logs are accepted as payment.

Players can obtain planks by taking logs to the sawmill operator. Right-click on this NPC, and there will be a "Buy planks" option. Players can then choose to make regular planks from regular logs, oak planks from oak logs, teak planks from teak logs, or mahogany planks from mahogany logs, for a price.

Infernal Source Dig Site has the closest bank, to the west.

Despite his name, the Sawmill operator is not involved in the Sawmill training operation at the nearby Sawmill.

History[edit | edit source]

Bill found the Lumber Yard about three years ago, having looked at land with an Estate agent who he would become friends with, because both of them supported each others' business. While founding his business, he took in three full time workers; Will, Phil and Jill. Will helped Bill develop the Supersteady Plankmaking machine, greatly increasing his profits. When Will decided to create his own sawmill, Bill became aware of his plans when the Estate agent told him and outbid him in every purchase he attempted. Will then decided to take the case to court.

If defended, the player assists Bill by claiming that Will knew too much trade secrets and would undermine his business. Bill will also state that while he supports competition, trade secrets are another matter entirely. If prosecuted, the player assists Will by claiming that Bill and the Estate agent conspired to keep their monopoly alive by preventing Will from setting up his own business. Regardless of the jury's decision, Bill returned to the sawmill to resume business.

Though a sawmill would pop up in both Rimmington (originally found in Taverley) and Prifddinas, Bill's Lumber Yard continues to be a profitable venture, as he appears to be the only one capable of performing high quantity orders given his advertisement on Sawmill training to bring in people to learn the sawmill trade.

Special logs[edit | edit source]

Special teak logs and special mahogany logs can be brought to the Sawmill operator and either sold (1,300 coins for teak logs, and 3,900 for mahogany) or exchanged for a completely free conversion of the logs in your inventory into planks. The free conversion requires two of the same type of special log, which can be supplied as bank notes:

  • Two special teak logs can be used to convert up to 27 teak logs into teak planks.
  • Two special mahogany logs can be used to convert up to 27 teak logs and/or mahogany logs into teak/mahogany planks.

If you have only one special total or one special of each type, the operator will only offer to buy your special logs.
