Safecracking is a Thieving activity that can only be accessed after completing all of the available capers in the Thieves' Guild. With level 62 Thieving, players can begin stealing from safes all over Gielinor. To get started, speak to the safe-cracking trainer in the Thieves' Guild to be given advice, a stethoscope, and a small loot bag. It is possible to crack a safe without these items, but this results in significantly slower cracking and forces the player to leave the spoils behind. The skill requirements for higher level safes can be boosted.

Players open safes by turning a dial and attempting to open the safe upon observing a visual and audio cue. Experience is gained while trying to open a safe at a rate of five experience per game tick, with more experience rewarded for successfully opening the dial locks on it, and even greater reward for cracking the safe open. To open safes faster, players should keep an eye on the safe they are opening and wait for it to briefly flash blue or listen for an audio cue. Clicking on the safe again when this occurs will immediately unlock one of the remaining locks on the safe. If you are having trouble clicking fast enough, try a less populated world, as lag can affect it.

Starting at level 62 Thieving, safecracking is a method for quick Thieving training. Players can gain from 300,000 to 950,000 base experience per hour.

After cracking a safe, the player can fill up their loot bag which can be fenced at the Thieves' Guild with Chief Thief Robin for Thieving experience, coins, and pilfer points to spend in Dodgy Derek's Dirty Deals. Uncommon looted special items can be handed in to Darren Lightfinger for 10 pilfer points or 37,500 coins each.

Almost all safes around Gielinor reset after 5 minutes of in-game time (world-switching does not work). The only exceptions are the Zemouregal's Fortress safes, which take 10 minutes to reset.

Pilfer points are used to purchase rewards from safecracking, such as loot bag upgrades, the master thief's stethoscope and lockpick (both can be placed on the tool belt), and Thieving-related consumables. Over 900 pilfer points per hour can be obtained by opening the low level, three-dial safes in Misthalin.

It is possible to obtain Ralph, the Thieving Skill pet, from safecracking.[1]

A good rotation can be:

  1. Teleport to Al Kharid; loot the safe directly north of the lodestone, then run west and up the stairs of the building next door.
  2. Teleport to Port Sarim; Loot the safe located in the Jewellery store, then in the building with the furnace inside.
  3. Teleport to Burthorpe. Run north to the castle. On the top floor are two safes.

Optimal Kandarin Speed Route:
  1. Teleport to Camelot using spell; loot both safes on ground floor of Camelot Castle
  2. Teleport to Ardougne using spell; loot both upper floor building safes surrounding Ardougne market. Skip Ardougne castle safes.
  3. Teleport to Yanille using House teleport spell (set your house location to yanille); loot ground-floor safe south of lodestone, and the upper-floor safe in the pub to the east.
  4. Repeat.

Optimal Hidden Safes Speed Route:
Required items: Jennica's ring, portable fairy ring or grace of the elves, runes for Camelot Teleport or Camelot teleport tablets
Required quests: Summer's End for Jennica's ring upgrade, Ritual of the Mahjarrat for Fairy Ring access to the Glacor Cave, A Fairy Tale III - Battle at Ork's Rift for free access to Zanaris Marketplace, Dishonour among Thieves for access to Zemouregal's fort.
Required achievements: Wilderness Hard Achievements to choose obelisk teleport destination
Recommended items: Cheap, disposable dual-wield melee weapons with Mobile perk for Surge and Bladed Dive; Double Surge unlocked; several powerbursts of acceleration (only outside the Wilderness).
If you do not have a portable fairy ring you can set your max guild portal to Zanaris which can be used with the grace of the elves.
With 92 Thieving you can use an Abyssal Lurker scroll (Abyssal Stealth) to get a +4 boost that will let you loot all four safes in Zemouregal's fort.
  1. Teleport to the Wilderness using lodestones. Go southeast to the obelisk, right-click one of the pillars, and choose option 6 to teleport to level 50 Wilderness. Go inside Rogues' Castle to loot the three safes upstairs.
  2. Run downstairs and behind the castle near the crates. Operate Jennica's ring to enter the Spirit Realm to allow you to teleport out from the deep Wilderness.
  3. Teleport to Glacor Cave (dkq). Go north out of the cave, west to Zemouregal's fort, and loot the 4 safes.
  4. Teleport to Wilderness again; loot the 3 safes again.
  5. Teleport to Zanaris using portable fairy ring or with your grace of the elves; loot both safes in the eastern market area.
  6. Teleport to Camelot; loot both safes on ground floor of the castle.
  7. Repeat. One cycle takes around 12 minutes.

This provides 950,000 base experience per hour. For faster trips, double Surge and Bladed Dive are helpful for getting around. The skeleton at Zemouregal's fort and rogues in their castle can often be Barged as another movement ability. The Slayer cape teleport to Chaeldar takes you closer to the Zanaris safes than the fairy ring. The master quest cape teleport is closer to the Glacor Cave exit than dkq, but this is a very high requirement. A portable obelisk can be used to teleport straight to the level 50 Wilderness obelisk.

Rewards[edit | edit source]

In addition to filling up a bag of loot to exchange for coins and pilfer points in the Thieves' Guild, players will also receive thieving experience when fencing in their loot bags; there is also a chance of finding several special items while safecracking. Assuming the player completely fills their loot bag, they can expect the following rewards:

The loot bag does not have to be full to fence its contents. A partially filled bag will give a proportional reward. For example, a loot bag that is 50% full will grant half of the rewards listed above when it is fenced.

To get pilfer points faster, it is suggested to open the lower-level Misthalin safes - which only have 3 dials - instead of the higher-level safes - which have 4 to 6 dials - as the level of a safe does not affect the amount the bag is filled per safe opened. The higher-level safes provide more experience than lower-level safes while unlocking each dial lock as well as successfully unlocking a safe; this is separate from the loot bag experience when fenced.

Using the small loot bag gives slightly more pilfer points per safe than the upgraded versions. For comparison, the small loot bag gives 3.8-8.4 points per safe while the huge loot bag gives only 3.4-7.4. Keep in mind the small loot bag will have to be fenced roughly 10-12 times as often as the huge loot bag, which takes time that could be spent cracking more safes.

These items can be handed in to Darren Lightfinger in the Thieves' Guild for 10 pilfer points or 37,500 coins each. Players can right-click him to hand in all of their items faster. Obtaining one of these items yields the following message: You found a really valuable item. Maybe the Thieves' Guild master would be interested in it?.

  • patch 8 May 2018 (Update):
    • Fixed several achievement issues with safe cracking.
    • There is now a 'hand-in' option on Darren Lightfinger to fence all of your safecracking valuables for pilfer points or coins. This will hand in any items you are carrying all in one go, you will need to speak to him to hand in a partial amount.
    • Loot bag upgrades for safecracking are now permanent unlocks and the highest tier bag you have purchased will be replaced if lost.
