Rune essence is obtained in the Runespan from the floating essence, or by chipping or depleting a creature living in the Runespan.

When an essence creature is siphoned and depletes, the player receives 50 pieces of essence. It is also possible to chip an essence creature to obtain small amounts of essence. This costs 10 runes of a certain type depending on the creature, e.g. air essling, mind essling, and water essling all require air runes.

The player may only take essence from floating essence clouds if they have less than 25 pieces in their inventory, as clicking "Collect" would bring the number up to 25.

When choosing to destroy rune essence, the entire stack will be destroyed in one action.

Players that try to bank any runes or essence from Runespan receive the message "A magical force prevents you from banking this item."
