Proposal for CSS styles and user pages electives[edit source]

I would like to add the lessons CSS styles and User Pages, both of which I would be more than happy to teach :)

Change the color of the title[edit source]

Well I think the header looks better in sky blue >.< lol, but we should change the color of the header so it doesnt look like a link --

The gold doesn't go with the Blue too well either.   Swizz Talk   Events!   16:12, March 27, 2010 (UTC)

Calculators in the University?[edit source]

Well, I know this is FAR from being the first thing a user learns (making calculators that is) but I think it could be useful to add for multiple reasons (of course, with a few conditions first).

First of all, we could create a Ardougne University (or call it whatever you want, I just came up with that like that) subpage with all the most advanced things that aren't teached anywhere on the wikia, nor even in Media Wiki help, stuff you must dig around user talk pages to find out how to do. Now, you may say that's what electives are for but I am talking about real advanced stuff (I'm not implying that the other classes are fake though =P). What I mean by that is that both making maps and calculators are advanced (although, if you are good with paint that can pass, I just took an example from the top of my head) but I feel that calculators might just overwelm new users in the first place, so placing it on the same page might not be a good idea.

So my proposal is, that we create a subpage for advanced lessons where we could place a calculator help guide. This will not only promote calculators on the wiki (which is one of the most needed things, In my opinion) but make users see a different side of the wiki. (note: I am talking about Javascipt calculators and GEMW ones too)

Quest point cape.pngTalk Newbie856 edit count Nomad guideMusic icon.png 13:48, March 27, 2010 (UTC)

PS: I am willing to create a basic page for it (which can be edited after of course, I'm not that good in calculators)

The goal of this wikiguild is to teach new users how to edit and be productive. If we get into real advanced stuff, as you worded it, we would effectively leave the intended purpose of the wikiguild. I do not support the idea, though feel free to persue it. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 13:52, March 27, 2010 (UTC)
Ah, ok, I understand your point of view and when I saw electives I thought about calculators is all. Also, where do you suggest I make the guide (if I ever make it.. always seem to be missing time there days), I think it seems weird on the calculators page no? Well, maybe it doesnt... Anyway, good luck with your University!
Quest point cape.pngTalk Newbie856 edit count Nomad guideMusic icon.png 13:56, March 27, 2010 (UTC)
First of all, not my university, it's owned by the community as a whole. You can create the calculators guide in your user-space. In fact, you can start now by pushing this button of ubertasticness. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 14:11, March 27, 2010 (UTC)
This should be under my proposal for an elective for use of #switch: and #if: i think.... 16:04, March 28, 2010 (UTC)
Well, there's also #vardefine #var #ifeq and #ifexpr that are really necessary in calcs, which is why I thought a whole new page was needed.Quest point cape.pngTalk Newbie856 edit count Nomad guideMusic icon.png 21:13, March 29, 2010 (UTC) EDIT: Forgot to sign, lol.
Isnt that javascript? I dont know how to write it i wouldnt know...i can write you a calculator in C++! :D 19:22, March 30, 2010 (UTC)

I know this is unrelated, but I want a degree at this place! Rune hatchet.png The Gedge Tinderbox.png 14:34, March 27, 2010 (UTC)

I'll make a userbox for it 16:04, March 28, 2010 (UTC)

Transparency[edit source]

Transparency is a badly needed elective, and it does not seem to roam too far into the realm of "advanced" stuff. I see me and about 3 other users frequently applying transparency on the wiki. If people are educated about how easy it is, we could have many more helping us out. --Aburnett(Talk) 14:45, March 27, 2010 (UTC)

There could be an image maintenance class, and I have been told transparency is rather simple (though I am unable to do it myself due to lack of software). Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 14:51, March 27, 2010 (UTC)
I could help with this. I know some great free programmes   Swizz Talk   Events!   15:24, March 27, 2010 (UTC)
Someone shouldve told me free programs can do this...ive been using photoshop >.< 16:01, March 28, 2010 (UTC)

While I like all the ideas coming in, remember not to get ahead of ourselves, we still need to decide on the basic lessons. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 15:51, March 27, 2010 (UTC)

I concure, it does not need to be a lesson....we already have enough people that know how to do it 16:01, March 28, 2010 (UTC)
I could help also. —Manyman (talk) 07:15, April 4, 2010 (UTC)

Templates[edit source]

Are we including vandalism or AGF templates, like {{test1}} and {{error2}}, and when to use them?  Tien  23:26, March 27, 2010 (UTC)

Yes, in the Community Interaction class. If anyone feels the need to continue to discuss this section, move it to the talk page for community interaction so we can discuss the class there. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 23:32, March 27, 2010 (UTC)

RSS Feeds[edit source]

I think not many people know how to add a RSS Feed, background or even thing like __NOTOC__... However, I would like to see lessons about setting up templates when nothing is on the Wiki (So you start out with null). --Zorak plorak 12:16, March 28, 2010 (UTC)

There is a lesson on templates we are working on. As per all your other suggestions, I am not 100% sure what your recommending. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 12:19, March 28, 2010 (UTC)

Namespaces[edit source]

A lesson dealing with namespaces (mainspace, user, talk etc...) should probably be created. This would familiarize new users with what each namespace is intended to do, while giving certain rules that apply to different types of namespaces. --Whiplash 16:27, March 28, 2010 (UTC)

Don't worry, Whiplash. I covered that in the (incomplete) lesson on templates, as I don't think it constitutes basis for a full lesson. Students should probably be directed to it during lesson one, but I felt it fits best with the template lesson as the topic of the Templatespace comes up. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 21:32, March 28, 2010 (UTC)

Userboxes?[edit source]

Noticed there are no userboxes for the university as yet...

I propose:

  • This user goes to Lumbridge University.
  • This user teaches at Lumbridge University.
  • This user was expelled from Lumbridge University.

Graphics folks?

--Dionisio 02:24, April 2, 2010 (UTC)

ill make them right now :) 03:05, April 2, 2010 (UTC)
Finished, check them out at RuneScape:Userboxes/Wiki#Lumbridge_University 04:24, April 2, 2010 (UTC)
Ah, "Graduated," missed that idea LOL! (Still say we need an "expelled" though, for the folks who want to be contrary.) And maybe folks who edit could be "Janitors" or "Groundskeepers." TY for the quick jumping to a random thought. --Dionisio 16:20, April 2, 2010 (UTC)

In the future, you don't need to propose this kind of thing. Be bold and do it yourself. If you don't know how, ask somebody on their talk page. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 11:25, April 2, 2010 (UTC)

I take this as a request so it really doesnt matter >.< 16:22, April 2, 2010 (UTC)
Oh, I know how. Further had my own ideas, but I was getting sleepy and others can pounce on things with different vision. MB's results weren't like what I had in mind, but they work. (Was thinking miniature Lumby pic with "shield of arms" in front and "Student" "Faculty" or "Expelled" text below. The "Grad" could have "fireworks" in the background.)

I'll set aside some time this weekend and give it a whirl. The image might not shrink well is my major concern. Now I'm off to get an oil change, finish the laundry, and do some shopping...--Dionisio 16:20, April 2, 2010 (UTC)
Well i could do that.....>.< you shouldve just told me 16:23, April 2, 2010 (UTC)
Lemme go get GIMP and ill get started on that...i might have it done by the end of the day 16:24, April 2, 2010 (UTC)

If I where you guys, I would stop making the userboxes now. We still don't even know how the guild is going to be formed yet, nor is there any reason to waste our energy on userboxes when we have gotten little to nowhere on the content of the lessons. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 16:27, April 2, 2010 (UTC)

Pray tell, how does a University get students or faculty if it doesn't promote its self? First we have to attract attention. That will get contributers. Contributers will provide more participants. And more participants are good, yes?

Modified the extant ones with direct links here btw.--Dionisio 12:16, April 3, 2010 (UTC)

Preliminary work done on what I was thinking of. The Lumby graphic just wouldn't work, so I went for a "Coat of arms." having fun reducing it and keeping "inner detail" acceptable. (Doesn't help that I don't have the Decorative shield for snagging a good screenshot. Like the color scheme of the one that's not properly imaged... <sigh> Maybe I'll have to play the silly minigame...) Added it to the list. Will work on further tomorrow.

Oh, had a stray thought, instead of "Graduated," how about "Alumni"?--Dionisio 22:32, April 3, 2010 (UTC)

Don't bother with the graduation thing. I am almost sure it's not going to work that way, so Alumni would be equally silly. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 20:24, April 5, 2010 (UTC)

I changed the color schemes so they all match. If you think hey look ugly, I'd suggest recoloring, but having the mall matching the LU color scheme, such as Orang and gray, or red and blue, or even brown and lime, whatever floats ye boaty. Runecrafting-icon.png Stormsaw1 Talk Sign HighscoresRunecrafting-icon.png 03:53, April 5, 2010 (UTC)

Don't worry, even if it is, I know what it's like for everyone to think something you made is ugly OMG!. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 20:24, April 5, 2010 (UTC)
You mean the skin you made? The colors were fine, but it made the interface for editing, etc. look all glitchy and unfinished. Don't worry Steler, it isn't your fault =D Runecrafting-icon.png Stormsaw1 Talk Sign HighscoresRunecrafting-icon.png 21:51, April 5, 2010 (UTC) And if anyone says it's your fault, send them to me...

Running the lessons[edit source]

Would talking be banned in all the teaching clans, or would this be down to the teacher? Rune hatchet.png The Gedge Tinderbox.png 20:00, April 2, 2010 (UTC)

Banning talking would probably wind up in teachers getting fired...... 20:49, April 2, 2010 (UTC)
The students have to be able to ask questions. Teachers can kick disruptive users at their digression, but should it be locked all the time they will lose their certification. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 23:24, April 2, 2010 (UTC)

Colors[edit source]

This page should probably get a mention for those sections where color is a consideration:

Any other good ones? Add to the list.

Semi-Protect[edit source]

The main page ought to be semi-protected dont you think? --

Runecrafting MythbustermaTalk   HSCabbage.png<= BRASSICA PRIME

Na. Not enough/any vandalism to warrant a protection at this moment in time. Quest.png Gaz Lloyd 7:^]Events!99s 22:31, May 19, 2010 (UTC)

Electives[edit source]

I thought I'd just create this section so we could centralize our ideas for electives. Ideas:

  • Image Maintenance
  • Vandalism (you know what I mean...)
  • Calculators (mostly just GEMW things, it seems like JS would be a bit too complicated for new editors)

I had more...I forgot...

ʞooɔ 01:13, May 24, 2010 (UTC)

I know exactly what you mean. I proclaim myself the teacher of the vandalism class! "Okay, guys, today we are going to learn how to spam! (WITH MAXIMUM EFFICIENCY)! READY! SET! GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" Okay, no really, those sound like good ideas. HaloTalk 01:15, May 24, 2010 (UTC)

Before we even think about electives, we need to worry about the four main classes. The biggest problem with this guild will be getting users to show up to classes. Think about that for a few minuts: getting the word out to new users that they should take an in-game class about editing that they will probably not hear about at all until they no longer need it. I never thought about this when I proposed the guild and would have formatted the function of the guild completely differently if I did. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 18:39, May 24, 2010 (UTC)

I've been thinking about this a lot, and it seems to me that it might be easier to not have classes in clan chats. Not only will some things be censored, but we can't copy and paste, or anything like that. In my opinion, we should have our lessons on the Project pages, or in IRC. ʞooɔ 19:08, May 24, 2010 (UTC)
I personally do not participate in IRC, so what if we offered multiple means of communication? (Such as using runescape as a message, and using a sandbox or something on the wiki for the lesson?) HaloTalk 19:57, May 24, 2010 (UTC)
What's this about having lessons on the project pages? Pages are not chat rooms and therefore cannot fill their purpose as lesson holding venues. IRC would also not be a good place as there is only one room, disrupting it for other users. The fact of the matter is that the clan chat system is the best teaching environment available to us, it's getting people into it that will cause the problems down the road. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 22:18, May 24, 2010 (UTC)
Sorry, I don't mean having the actual "lessons" on the project pages. Scratch that part. We could easily make a channel (such as #wikia-runescape-uol) that would be only for those who want to take part in the lesson. For those who don't often use IRC, it's really, really easy to get to it and use it. Just a suggestion. ʞooɔ 23:05, May 24, 2010 (UTC)
