idea?[edit source]

Should we make a (few) template(s) for informing users that their ban has expired, which explains to them what not to do next time? ajr 02:16, September 1, 2011 (UTC)

I'll make some. Adam Savage G 02:18, September 1, 2011 (UTC)

No users on the list[edit source]

What should we do when there are no users on the list? Add the

|colspan=6|<div align="center">No current bans.</div>

code each time, to the inconvenience of some users (I have a couple links in my toolbar that link directly to the ban summary here and here), so it would save me the time it would take searching for the bans page, editing out the code above, and adding the template and the summary (approx. 20 seconds lost, according to a stopwatch) if this were added. In addition, stating that there are no bans may not be completely up-to-date at one point.

Or, we could just not add this, but assume people realize this. Or, we could try something else (I'm open to suggestions, and hope I'm not making too big of a deal out of this). Discuss, Smithing (talk | contribs) 02:54, December 27, 2011 (UTC)

Maybe instead of putting that, we could put a notice saying something to the effect of "If there is no bans listed, there might not be any bans. Please check Special:ListUsers/bannedfromchat to ensure that all bans are listed on this page." That way one does not have to edit the page to remove that notice after they add a new ban, or have to remember to uncomment it whenever one removes the last ban. The text could use a little love to make it sound nicer though. svco4bY.png3Gf5N2F.png 17:19, December 27, 2011 (UTC)
Sounds like a good idea. "To verify all of the bans are listed below, consider checking this page. If the list below is empty, there may not be any current bans." Smithing (talk | contribs) 19:41, December 27, 2011 (UTC)

Template update[edit source]

Well, I managed to create a template (that works well with subst:) that I think would be better to use than the current one. For example, instead of having to type your username under mod if you banned the user, you can just type i, and it will do that for you. Typing t under the ban date will give the current date using this template (substituted, of course). The template is right here. If anyone wants to look at the template before I add it and offer suggestions, please do so. And of course, typing in another mod's name or ban date will display that one. I'm having trouble making u spit out "Until further notice" under expiry, so if anyone wants to help with that, it would be appreciated. Smithing (talk | contribs) 02:48, January 6, 2012 (UTC)

Ban archives[edit source]

I'd like to suggest renaming the RuneScape:Chat/Bans/History page back to RuneScape:Chat/Bans/Archive 1. I feel that the argument of consistency is a valid one, considering that it is an archive, and all archives seem to have the word "archive" in the title. They don't include "discussion history" or anything like that in them.

Second, I feel that calling this a history of chat bans (well, the name is implying this) is too broad a name. I feel that the other one is a bit more specific, after all, the page is really just an archive of bans listed on the page.

We could call the page several things, from history, to log, to anything else, I just feel that the previous name sets itself from the rest.

Next, I'd like to suggest join/leave related bans are added to the page. Join/leave related bans can have an effect on decisions. For example, if a user is very frequently being banned for join/leave spam, then leaving an "until further notice" ban expiry date may not be a bad idea. Discuss, Smithing (talk | contribs) 16:52, January 15, 2012 (UTC)

Strong support - Unanimous consensus was reached within the chat itself yesterday to implement both of the above proposals. It should not have been renamed again without discussion. In its current format the page looks less professinal, sloppy, disorganised, inconsistent, and incomplete (why on earth would we leave out join/quit bans from a ban history page?). Ronan Talk 16:59, January 15, 2012 (UTC)

Yah it looks more professional as "archive", also j/q should not be excluded What I've done Ciphrius Kane Talk 17:03, January 15, 2012 (UTC)

I don't really mind about jq bans. I changed it to allow them. (I'll go back and add them all later >_>) And I'm fine with Archive instead of History. But I don't agree with archive 1. What I had in mind was that we could have subpages for each year or so and transclude them all onto that one page. Creating completely different pages, while not really burdening enough to be a big problem, is somewhat counterproductive. It makes it so you have to go to multiple pages to see someone's full ban history, instead of just one. And my personal preference would just to have one central page for it, instead of multiple, which I honestly see being messier and harder to navigate than having one central page. Matt (t) 22:58, January 15, 2012 (UTC)

Okay. Me and Smithing had an idea that we could keep the central page, create seperate subpages for every two years, and just link to them on that central page instead of transcluding them. So we could have a Bans/Archive/2011 - 2012 and a Bans/Archive/2013 - 2014 that wouldn't be too short or too long. Thoughts? Matt (t) 23:16, January 15, 2012 (UTC)

Adding bans[edit source]

Now that Wikia has updated the chat so that bans can get expiry dates added onto them, should the current list of chat bans only be updated if someone is given the "Banned from chat" user right (which does not give users the option to set expiry dates)?
