Formatting[edit source]

In the MediaWiki CSS, they have a class called "errorbox" and "error", that are exactly alike to what we're using now. Is there a reason we're using not using them?

Currently we're using

<table align="center" width="100%"><tr><td><div style="padding: 3px; background-color: #ffe4e1; border: 2px solid red; line-height:100%">
<font color="red"><strong><big>INFO:</big></strong></font> The page you requested has been protected to prevent creation. The following is a list of pages that are currently protected. If for any reason these pages need to be created, please contact an administrator.
<!--

NOTE TO ADMINS: The syntax is as follows:
-----------------------------------------
* for titles in the MAIN or ARTICLE namespace
*Title for titles in the TEMPLATE namespace
* for titles in the IMAGE or FILE namespace
* for titles in all other namespaces

-->

<strong>
<!--START LIST-->
*
*
*
*
<!--END LIST-->
</strong>
</div>
</td></tr></table>

With the two classes we could use

<div class="errorbox"><span class="error">INFO:</span> The page you requested has been protected to prevent creation. The following is a list of pages that are currently protected. If for any reason these pages need to be created, please contact an administrator.
<!--
NOTE TO ADMINS: The syntax is as follows:
-----------------------------------------
* for titles in the MAIN or ARTICLE namespace
*Title for titles in the TEMPLATE namespace
* for titles in the IMAGE or FILE namespace
* for titles in all other namespaces
-->
<strong>
<!--START LIST-->
*
*
*
*
<!--END LIST-->
</strong>
</div>

Which is shorter and less confusing than what we have currently. (The one we have now has a table inside a table, which looks very strange in some browsers) --Lexmarkmantalk  01:45, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

Including vs Linking to offending articles[edit source]

Currently this page uses template inclusion to include the content of the protected articles. Is this the best thing to do?

For example, if someone creates one of these articles, and puts in it links to other pages, it might make the pages linked to look like they are the ones at fault rather than the actual created page.

I think a link to the page (rather than inclusion) would be better because then it would be obvious what page has been created. Amaurice talk 13:56, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

A link won't work though - it won't fully protect pages that are linked, only those that are included. This is basically a replacement for creating a page with template:deletedpage and protecting it. Skill 21:23, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
Skill is correct, transcluding the pages is the only option, otherwise cascading protection (which is what enables the blacklist to function) won't work. -- Manticore Talk | Contributions 12:43, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
Yes, I understand now. I'd missed the use of the cascading protect. Thanks for explaining. :-) Amaurice talk 14:09, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Justification for Blacklisting[edit source]

Apologies for asking this, but would it be appropriate to ask why those pages are blackmarked? From what I understand, those pages were blackmarked as a result of past edit wars, but now that they have ceased, would it be possible to remove some of the pages from the blacklist as to avoid buildup over time?

After a while I guess they should be taken off the blacklist, given that we should try to have as few protected pages as possible. It should be noted that the last time one of those was unprotected it was recreated again within a few days, but this won't be the case for all of them. Skill 06:46, 4 December 2007 (UTC)

$1[edit source]

Why is that page blacklisted? Is it due to the '$' character?
Spiked boots detail.pngDoomedrusher|Talk||Contributions||Edit Count| 21:13, 31 December 2007 (UTC)

No, because people kept creating it but it has to stay uncreated, and no one ever read the deletion log summaries, so it was created and subsequently deleted 12 times. ChristineTalk 05:03, 1 January 2008 (UTC)
What was the article about? White partyhat old.png C Teng talk 00:38, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

I figured it out. $1 has to do with the way MediaWiki works, and apparently it is related to the main page or something.

If you look at MediaWiki:Pagetitle, you will see that the "$1" is normally replaced by the title of the page you are viewing. $1 is like MediaWiki's version of templates' "{}". Dragon medium helm! Whaddaya know?Chiafriend12Better than rune!Loon is best buttlord 00:39, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

Can we at least remove the link or link it to No page to remove it from the wanted pages? Cheers, Chicken7 >talk 09:01, 29 February 2008 (UTC)
If I know my MediaWiki right, that'd probably mess things up. That's why it's been deleted so much. Dragon medium helm! Whaddaya know?Chiafriend12Better than rune!Loon is best buttlord 17:18, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

Shortcut[edit source]

Could the shortcut box be made not to be blacklisted? Since there's one on the page, it's automatically protected. White partyhat old.png C Teng talk 22:17, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

Never mind, it isn't now, because of the update. White partyhat old.png C Teng talk 02:04, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
