Profile[edit source]

Removing some content from image pages[edit source]

Recently while recategorizing some images in Category:Location images, I cam across some stuff that was on the image pages. Basically, it's

what happens when you preselect a category from the dropdown menu on Special:Upload. Would it be possible for someone to use their bot to remove these please? It serves no purpose, and it wouldn't be too much work for the bot to remove them. Blaze_fire.png12.png 07:44, December 3, 2013 (UTC)

Beastiary work[edit source]

I have been starting to do some work on the beastiaries recently, and was wondering on what to do with monsters that are no longer present. Monsters such as the Turkey and Saradominist gatherer which currently still hold a place on the Levels 1 - 10 page, however are no longer attackable in the game. Do they stay on the Beastiary, or are they removed?

If they are removed then I have no problem, however if they are required to stay I believe it may be benaficial to add a 0 combat page, as there are many which are starting to expand the length of Levels 1 - 10 quite dramatically. Along with the reversion to 138 combat the pages are only going to get longer if the current boundries persist.

I'd say remove anything that is no longer attackable otherwise it's just confusing.
You also might be interested in Forum:My database code is finally ready. It's a bit technical if you're not familiar with javascript, but the aim of it is to convert the bestiary into a searchable database. Droprate template[edit source]

Hello one and all, I need some help with a template I want to use on all my impling logs.

This template would involve an edited version of {{DropsLine}} as far as I'm aware, although it might be easier to create it from scratch. It would be called like this in one of the logs:

{{User:Everystat13/Impling logs/DroprateLine|Item|Amount dropped at a time|Total (using {{#var:total}})|Occurences}}
(eg. {{User:Everystat13/Impling logs/DroprateLine|Air rune|30|{{#var:total}}|4}})

This would make a line in a table similar to a drop table:

It calculates the percentage by dividing the amount with the total and multiplying by 100, colors the cell accordingly with the same colors found in {{DropsLine}} (for instance, 25% to 50% green, 20% to 25% yellow, etc.) and then puts that percentage in the cell at the end.

I am not a template handyman, so if anyone could make this for me, that would be greatly appreciated. Impling loot submission template[edit source]

My first template isn't even done yet and I have a second request already!

I want a template that does something similar to {{Charm log header}}, but with an interface that is similar to Calculator:Prayer. Here, someone would select the impling type in a drop-down menu, type the drop and the amount of items received from that drop, click submit, and a line would be added to a table I would have at the bottom of User:Everystat13/Impling logs. This way, anyone can submit impling data, I would organise the data every so often into the correct pages and delete the contents of the table, and in this way we can get closer to a calculator as suggested here. This will need various checks for making sure the info submitted won't cause an error and it will require policing of the submitted info to filter out any vandalism, errors not caught by the script, etc. but it's not as hard as you might think. cqm 23:10, 26 Mar 2014 (UTC) (UTC)

Factual correction[edit source]

When discussing certain things, which cultural explanation do we use?

- For instance, I edited a page to say that the floor that is level with the ground (ground floor) is equal to that of the name, the first floor, whilst (as far as I know), in Britain their understanding is Ground floor, then the floor above is the first floor, which I have a hard time understanding, and I'm sure they do the same to my interpretation.

So which do we use? OR How else can we resolve this?

Issues with Calculators[edit source]

We've had a couple complaints about issues with the way profits display in calculator/MMG tables. Latest example is here. If you arrange the table by increasing/decreasing profit, it doesn't work correctly. We had a similar complaint a week or so ago about MMGs doing a similar thing. In that case, negative numbers weren't being sorted properly. Can someone figure this out please? <3 sssSp7p.pngIjLCqFF.png 20:03, June 22, 2014 (UTC)

The inclusion of non-numerical content in a column (i.e., the coin graphics in this case) makes the column sort lexically rather than numerically. I stole Template:Sort from Wikipedia a while ago, though not many places use it here. [[:Template:SortingKey]] provides left padding for sorting numbers lexically, although there are other ways to do it. Personally, I'd do away with the piles of coins, but people seem to want them. --Saftzie (talk) 22:49, June 22, 2014 (UTC)
I made a custom parser to deal with coins, you can see it sorting correctly on Summoning pouches. This particular issue is somewhat quirkier. Part of the problem was the non-coins values used for gout tuber - I've changed those to use a 0 value passed to {{coins}} which has fixed the last 4 columns.
The next issue, that affects the first two columns to use {{coins}} seems to be caused by something to do with lazy loading of the coins images. The custom parser tests a string extracted from the table cell, if it passes the test then it sorts according to the method provided by said custom parser. With images that are lazy loaded there's an img tag present in the test string, for images that load straight away (the first couple on the page) the img tag isn't present in the string and it fails the test. Not quite sure what to do about it at the moment, but I'll figure something out. cqm 09:12, 23 Jun 2014 (UTC) (UTC)
The difference in test string is caused by something in jquery's .text() ($.fn.text) but I'm having trouble figuring out the difference in behaviour. If you want to test it, call $( $( 'td' )[someNum] ).text() where someNum is the number of the td tag. You'll notice that images that aren't lazy loaded return a string of a number (with a load of whitespace either side), images that are return part of the img tag along with the number. Perhaps a fix might be to load any lazy-loaded coin images if they're within a sortable table then remove the associated data- attributes so they're the same as a normal img tag, all before any actual sorting happens. Figured it out - the difference is down to the noscript tag which is used if the browser has js turned off. I'm just removing the noscript tag with js which should put all our sorting issues with {{coins}} to rest.
There will still be issues if someone uses words like N/A or Varies instead of 0 when there's no profit. If there's a report of any such issues, then just replace the words with the template. cqm 14:24, 24 Jun 2014 (UTC) (UTC)

'Welcome' System Messages[edit source]

I really hope this is an ok place to ask about this topic. I have been viewing the various System Messages that have been modified on this wikia. I am specifically interested in the 'Welcome' prefix System Messages. I would just like to know more about how they work, the welcome-enabled and welcome-message-anon SMs in particular. What is the effect of having the welcome-enabled message modified to page-user? And, also, the welcome-message-anon set to @disabled, what effect does this have? And, finally, the welcome-user is changed to Wikia. What does that mean/do? I am interested in learning a whole lot more for my own wikia (well, it's not mine but I have taken over as the only active admin -- everyone previously has left the poor thing in their rearview) at the link to my Wall in my sig. I didn't want to type out the address as someone may view it as spam, or the like. I have to admit seeing all the work that has gone into this wikia is mind-blowing. My hats off to everyone who helped put this together. I haven't found a more organized and useful wikia, yet. If this is the wrong place to be asking about the System Messages, I do apologize. This seemed like the place to start with all the documentation I have found and read here. Hi there. Setting welcome-enabled to page-user means that default userpages are created automatically, instead of talk pages (we do manual talk page welcomes). Disabling welcome-message-anon means that we don't welcome unregistered users in any way. I believe setting welcome-user to Wikia means that User:Wikia makes the default userpages. Wikia's [ help page] for welcoming is not particularly useful, but it may have some information you're looking for if you want to know more about how welcoming works. The different options apparently are not well-documented. If you have other questions about this or other things, feel free to join [[Special:Chat]]. And thank you for the compliments, but we're a wiki, not a wikia! Wikia (the company) are trying really, really hard to rebrand their wikis as "wikias". Thanks so much for getting back to me so quickly. I do have a basic understanding of how the various messages work. I just have never seen the @disabled and page-user options y'all have set up. I had a feeling about the 'not having anything to do with anonymous users' concept. I just wanted to make sure I was understanding it correctly. I'm talking it over with my wiki(no a) to see if they will allow me to do the same thing with regards to anonymous users. Since I have taken over as sysop, I have had to deal with anonymous users making edits that don't conform to the rest of the way the site is laid out. And, getting a hold of those people is virtually impossible. I'm getting tired of having to rollback edits. I love the way y'all have your templates laid out, too. I'm in the process of 'borrowing' and modifying the template documentation files you have here. I just love the way those are laid out. I'm learning as I go and learning fast. I'm disabled, so I have the free time to spend learning and trying new things on here, overall. Again, thanks so much for getting back with me so quickly. I'm glad I found the right place to ask the questions, also. I wasn't looking forward to getting banned and/or scolded. JS Broken in Monobook[edit source]

This is mostly just an FYI. Site and User JavaScript is broken in Monobook. I filed a bug with Wikia a day ago, because my JavaScript console atm says:

I heard about this a few days ago when it happened, but was under the impression it was fixed. I'm seeing similar errors in my console, although the error messages are slightly less descriptive. e.g. undefined is not a function, cannot call makeQueue of undefined, etc. It appears to be caused by this although I'm at a loss as to why we have article comment code loading here. cqm 11:33, 14 Nov 2014 (UTC) (UTC)
JS was broken for Monobook in a similar way about a week ago, but then it was fixed right away (within a day from when I noticed it). This time is "new" (or recurring) and has lasted about 2 days now. --Saftzie (talk) 21:20, November 14, 2014 (UTC)
Turns out there's a pull request for this open already, it simply re-orders modules so that articlecomments comes after bucky. I'd guess the fix is going to come in time for wednesday, the next code release. Calculator:Template/Smithing[edit source]

Light familiar[edit source]

The Light creature pouch and Enlightenment scrolls can't be swapped at Bogrog/Lord Amlodd. There's no way to display this in Template:Infobar Summon Pouch and Template:Infobar Summon Scroll because the relevant parameters won't accept "no"/"none" values or similar. Could someone rewrite the code for these slightly so the Light familiar can be properly represented? 5-x Talk 20:05, January 4, 2015 (UTC)

I've added a swap parameter to both templates to account for this. Set it to no to suppress the associated output. I've also added a untradetert parameter to the pouch template to account for untradeable tertiary ingredients (dungeoneering familiars). And lastly, I've documented the exchange parameter along with the parameters I've added fulfilling this request :) Let me know if there's anything else that needs changing :)
At some point in the future (when the template is converted to a module most likely), I'll suppress the shard return, untradeable tertiary ingredient and untradeable pouch/scroll of dungeoneering familiars in a single parameter, but that'll have to wait until after the exchange conversion. cqm 00:12, 16 Jan 2015 (UTC) (UTC)

Scan clue location maps[edit source]

The maps are not displaying correctly on the page - parts of them are being cut off along the right hand side of the page where they are too wide. As far as I know there's no way to resize the maps so I was hoping someone else had a solution to this. FWIW, it only happens in the Oasis skin. Monobook is fine. You just get a scroll bar in Monobook. Oasis seems to be suppressing horizontal scroll bars at the cost of clipping and squashing images. Digging into the CSS may provide an answer. --Saftzie (talk) 01:03, January 24, 2015 (UTC)

Strange RecentChanges bug[edit source]

Since today (read: the day that Wikia changed their header) I have the problem of the (undo) links disappearing in RecentChanges. I have several scripts installed (User:InvalidCards/common.js and User:InvalidCards/wikia.js) but they have always worked without problems. I just now installed User:Quarenon/rcrollback.js first in common.js, which led to a duplicate undo link disappearing, and after that in wikia.js which resulted in nothing much happening at all. Is anyone able to help me out here? Sorting Error Help[edit source]

I'm having an issue with this function not behaving as expected in the following table:

The table seems to sort "Gold per Chi" not based on the expression preformed, but instead by the value returned by the {{GEP}} template. Can this be fixed? Heaven Sent (talk) 09:25, February 4, 2015 (UTC)

It should sort based on the value found in the table cell, in this case 42239, 42227 and 49427. However, it seems that this isn't happening for reasons I don't understand. The last column should be sorted exactly the same as the GE price column, they're exactly the same apart from the value of the numbers themselves. cqm 11:16, 4 Feb 2015 (UTC) (UTC)

I was able to rectify this problem by removing the colspan:"2" from the first cell. The table now works as originally intended.

Limit lookup calc[edit source]

The limit lookup calc is broken. For example, try to use it on GE page. It returns the entire exchange page for an item instead of just the limit. From what I understand, it's broken because of some recent changes to exchange module? Anyway, could someone fix this? 5-x Talk 11:43, February 21, 2015 (UTC)

Fixed, thanks for the catch. In changing the exchange setup, I split {{ExchangeItem}} into several different templates, all using Module:Exchange for the logic:

There's also {{GEExists}} for checking if an item exists in our Exchange 'database', which can be used as {{ifeq:{{GEEXists|{{{1|}}}}}|1|<exists>|<doesn't exist>}}. Indenting tables isn't guaranteed to work. MediaWiki generates HTML from wiki mark-up, but not always the way you might expect. --Saftzie (talk) 19:11, March 12, 2015 (UTC)

I'm hesitant to force indentions by using px or em unites, as this will cause a formatting inconsistency within the article. The :<content> is great for this, as regardless of the viewers display settings, it will always behave as a constant when used by any author, as intended. :<content> normally works, but it seems in this one instant something in the source isn't behaving and compiling the HTML as intended, something I believe to be a bug. Is that the case or have I misunderstood how the wiki-markup table is supposed to behave? I also cleaned up my original post as the formatting was rather sloppy, and wrapped the problem table and its formatting in a div tag so further discussion is not touched by the bug(?) -- Heaven Sent (talk) 22:12, March 12, 2015 (UTC)

The problem with that is Wikia's mobile pages don't seem to import the CSS; things indented with : display as indented, but table style values are ignored. Viewing this page on both physical and emulated Mobile devises and tablets (Note 3/iPhone 6+/Samsung Tab 10.1) displayed the tables with : indentions as indented, but the tables with style="margin-left: 1.6em;" are not indented.
For the time being, indenting certain tables like this will suffice for me, but to adhere to Wikia's best practices I shouldn't be using nested tables since they don't render correctly either. For the most part, I'm happy with continuing to use : where it's applicable, and use style="margin-left: 1.6em;" in the rare situation I need to break from best practices. Exporting Exchange Data[edit source]

Unfortunately, there's not a particularly easy way to go about this currently. The data is stored on subpages of Module:Exchange, e.g. Module:Exchange/Iron ore/Data. The /Data subpage has a list of dates and prices, sometimes with the volume (in millions) depending on if it appeared on the top 100 traded items for that day, in the format data:price or date:price:volume (date is measured in unix time, per the format used by the Jagex API it's pulled from).

I'd like to potentially automate the valuing process Treasure Trails#Difficulty currently uses.

I would like to do something such as:

Yew Grove seems a tad excessive for this. The article's talk page would be the most appropriate place, but it likely won't get as many visitors. I'd personally not add the {{Coins}} template in this specific section.
Making the maximum values dynamic GE prices seems like a good idea; though the better solution would be making it fully dynamic (selecting the maximum values possible reward, instead of setting the reward that we know/checked manually to be the worth the most at the time of editing). That said, this may not be feasible/efficient in wiki code, and I doubt someone'd create a Module for just that.
As for adding the average values based on the stream... I'm unsure. Having this information is interesting, and could be helpful to some, but it will be outdated very quickly due to changing market prices (I can't imagine the puzzle skipping tickets will stay at their insane price forever). If it is added, I would put it in the trivia. Otherwise I can think of two, both rather unlikely, ways of implementing a dynamic average:
  • If we know all the possibilities involved, a complete formula can be created to calculate the average.
  • We can sum and list the full loot the mods obtained in the 2*5000 caskets they opened, and manually calculate the total GE worth of those items, diving by 10000 to provide the estimated average value.

Incomplete Refs and Citation Templates[edit source]

I know that if a citation used in an article hasn't been verified in a while, a red star pops up by it that says so. I was wondering if it was possible to add some kind of star next to a reference that is incomplete (and therefore in Category:Incomplete references)? This would be pretty helpful in articles like RuneScape, where there are 36 references and at least one of them is incomplete because who has the time to go through each one? Personal JS and importArticles[edit source]

I have enabled personal JS in the prefs, but my personal common.js, monobook.js, and wikia.js do not run starting "today" (possibly with the Tuesday tech update). It was working before today. I have changed my common.js to simply ...

... to make it painfully obvious that it isn't running, because I get no alert on any page. I've toggled the pref option back and forth a few times to be sure, too.

Also importArticles seems to have been changed not to allow importing any articles in the User: space, possibly as a result of Wikia trying to enforce not loading user JS from site JS. It makes it annoying to load any modules of my personal JS from my personal JS. I also kind of wonder if this point is the cause of the point above.

Mostly I just want to know if anyone else sees this. The tech forums at Community wiki are silent on the issue, and I would have expected at least someone to post there if it happened to them. So does anyone else see this? Thanks. --Saftzie (talk) 06:09, September 9, 2015 (UTC)

Somehow, they've broken the user RL module so it only consists of a user's global.js. Due to lack of other reasons, I can only guess that it's because we're testing the new ContentReview extension at the moment and are the only one's doing so.
I'd agree that importArticles suffers from the same issues. I'd speculate that it's caused by modifications to the PHP code that implements the mode=articles part of RL (and thus importArticles) but I'm not sure how they've managed to break RL itself. If I supply either useuserjs=0 or useusercss=0 as a query, I don't get the dismissable message, although it used to say "Personal JavaScript" rather than "Custom JavaScript," even when personal JS was enabled. That message should only display on MediaWiki:*.js pages when site JS is disabled, or when using the ?usesitejs=0 URL parameter. This notification is designed to be independent of the JSRT. If a user sees it under any other circumstances, please have them submit a bug to Special:Contact so we can capture their browser info to investigate.

Money making guides table for skill training guides[edit source]

I'm looking for someone to make somekindof table to display money making guides that use a particular skill in a section on some skill training guides (e.g. to replace the "Money making using the Mining skill" section on Pay-to-play Mining training). Ideally this would be something which updated with the estimates of gp/hr that is on the mmg's page and display the same kinds of information that the section on the skill training guide has currently. The main problem with this is the criteria for selection is the title contains the word "mining"; this is likely to result in false positives and negatives, especially for other skills. Ideally we'd have some (hidden) categories added to all the money making method pages for the primary skill(s) involved in that method. Blank page[edit source]

Hi everyone, I've having a very strange problem with the wiki. I'm trying to visit the Wilderness Warbands page, but attempting to navigate to that page results in a blank page (tested on 2 browsers). Attempting to get to that page for my phone results in a redirect to "Community Central:Not a valid Wikia" (and that's after I directly entered the full URI "". Is anyone else experiencing this? Hey, just popping in to give you an update: the team are still actively working on getting this back to normal. Apologies for the problems - it's really unfortunate it happened just before a weekend, or we would probably have got this sorted much sooner. (Temporarily commenting out the math tags was a great idea, as is the right rail message - we appreciate your doing so).
We know the source of the problem (a server issue), and we're working on remedying it now. The sheer size of your community slows things down a little (not that I'm complaining!), but it should be sorted within the next 24 hours. pengLocations, the new loader in Common.js, and maybe ContentReview[edit source]

I noticed "today" that Wikia approved the new version of pengLocations.js, however the PHASL article still doesn't reflect that. The updated code appears not to be working there, which is odd, because if anyone previously clicked the "Enter test mode" button, it did work. I did some digging. Here's the story.

If I add things or change the query in the Common.js snippet (the data object) in any sane way, it also works. I begin to suspect the cache. I fetch manually and look at it. It is, indeed, the old revision, which won't work after the page move.

Is there any way to force Wikia's ResourceLoader cache to be flushed and updated with the new, recently-approved code? I wonder if the query "reviewed=1448042952" (which is a fairly new parameter) is Wikia's way to increment a counter to re-cache code that's been updated and approved. The counter isn't the rev ID of the article, but it appears not to change with time, either.

If Wikia has changed something about how the ResourceLoader cache works for ContentReview, it may mean the new loader in Common.js needs to add that parameter somehow.

I had a quick dig through the importArticles code and discovered you're findings are correct - Wikia have done something to their extended version of RL to support JSReview. I've added some extra params which I've lifted directly from the importArticles JS and added the skin param into both CSS and JS loaders.

It does appear to work now, but only because the URL from which Common.js fetchs pengLocations is now, i.e., &skin=monobook is the only addition. RuneMetrics data[edit source]

Hey guys, In light of the new addition to the game - RuneMetrics, it's now possible to collect 100% accurate drop logs on massive scale. For example, here is a few hours worth of testing in abyss - 8,776 Abyssal Walker - perfect drop log. I am wondering if the wikia has any plans on collecting this data and providing highly accurate drop tables instead of or in addition to this old quantized drop sysstem. I'm sure many people, including myself would be willing to provide large datasets (with 1000s of kill counts). This would be a highly valuable addition to the wiki. -

It would be difficult for certain monsters. If we make the change for some monsters, we'd be expected to do it for all. And not everything can be killed in such quantities so easily. For now, I think we should stick to the current system. In the coming months (as there's still a lot of information from past updates to deal with) we can reevalute the plan and maybe start a project to work on drop samples. If you feel optimistic about this happening, you should feel free to post data on article talk pages (e.g. your data can go on Talk:Abyssal walker) to get a bit of a head start. Haha walkers was just an easy test run. But if runemetrics keeps long-term drop logs for monsters, than it's not a problem at all as I could get you even 5K araxxi drop logs (in ~3 months). But that's provided runemetrics does keep that data for that long. Quickly looking over the website I can see it keeps the drop logs for at least 1 month. So it's definitly doable to gather 1000s of kills even for the slowest monsters out there - bar some npcs from quests and such. -- 00:08, February 23, 2016 (UTC)

I was thinking about how to store such information on the wiki, and while it's not an issue for a lot of drops, there are problems for certain drops such as coins. Coins are rarely dropped in constant amounts, and the current drop logs offered by RuneMetrics aren't capable of differentiating between coins from one drop and coins from any number of other drops from what I can tell. There's also issues with the RDT polluting data.
I'd very much like to be able to store all this data, but I think we need to have a good think about how we go about it rather than just taking everything from day 1. cqm 17:35, 25 Feb 2016 (UTC) (UTC)

Hey there, 

Can we do something to get rid of these ads?  Like maybe have a premium (paid) acct? 

I'm always having to scan for adware & other garbage after I visit these pages, and it drives me crazy. 

I have an older computer, and I often get kicked out of the game if I have this wiki open.  This wiki has the best, current info available. 

I would gladly pay a subscription fee or something to get rid of these ads and the problems I get when I visit these pages.

We had the same issue with File:PHAS Hint Map.png. The original file size 6,468 × 4,654 (5.28 MB) gave the Error creating thumbnail: Invalid thumbnail parameters error message as well. Resizing it down to 2,500 × 1,799 (3.16 MB) corrected the problem though. I'm not sure what the maximum pixel resolution is, but if you want to keep trying to scale it down, it should eventually upload correctly. — Heaven Sent (talk) 19:22, July 9, 2016 (UTC)
So I actually checked.... "[[w:c:c:Help:Uploading files#How much can I upload?|''The maximum size of uploads on Wikia is 10 MB. The maximum image resolution is 12.5 million pixels.'']]" The current file uploaded for [[:File:Eastern Sea Map.png]] is at 12,736,288 pixels. Seed logs[edit source]

Seed logs for bird's nest haven't been working correctly since the bird's nest pages were split to new names. The link for submitting new data leads to creating a new page (like [[Bird's nest (seeds 2)/Mole nest log]]). The submission link works when moved to these names, but changing them to simply pagename/log breaks them.

Monster Infoboxes broken?[edit source]

Are the monster infoboxes broken? I see "Script error" on every monster article. -- 03:48, July 22, 2016 (UTC)

The only error I see in my console is "uncaught exception: Module wikia.abTest is not defined.", which just means this wiki isn't part of whatever A/B test Wikia is doing right now. Everything else looks fine. --Saftzie (talk) 04:02, July 22, 2016 (UTC)
I know Wikia was having some issues with Lua, something we use a lot in our infoboxes, recently. However, I viewed a few monster pages and don't see any Script error messages. I suggest purging the page to clear the cache and see if that fixes the problem. It's not every monster article, though, at least not for me. Imp, Goblin, and Fire giant are fine, for example, but General Graardor is broken. That's one Template:Infobox Monster, one Template:Infobox monster multi, and two Template:Infobox Monster new, only one of which is broken for me. FWIW, the template page of "new" is broken for me. I did action=purge on them, without any change, so it's unlikely brokenness/fixedness is a cache thing. It's possible there's just some syntax LUA doesn't like now that gets exercised in some cases but not others. --Saftzie (talk) 09:20, July 22, 2016 (UTC)

I'm not 100% sure how you're using it, but the format is {{#invoke:module_title|function|arg1|arg2|etc.}}. The price usage works because a function call price exists to handle the specific arguments of {{GEP}} and {{GEPrice}}, notably multiples but also it needed to pass it through #expr first. Value had no such pre-existing template iirc nor was it required to do anything particularly special, so it's accessed through the view method.
I'm guessing you saw the _price and _value functions, amongst similarly prefixed functions, and thought they were being used when you called #invoke. They're designed to be used by other modules, rather than having to parse the wikitext formatted response of the module before using it for something else. cqm 19:12, 12 Nov 2016 (UTC) (UTC)

That doesnt go low enough for the angle they have in the images. In the images it's a sort of looking up at the cat angle, where as orb only will give you a downward angle. Borithel (talk) 20:01, June 8, 2017 (UTC)

Making the time stamp part of the signature customization[edit source]

When you sign a comment it displays your custom signature, then a time stamp. My signature is runescape chat themed and I wanted something like this: "[01:47:57] Borithel:" instead of the time stamp being appended to the end of my signature. Is there a variable I can use to implement this? When I use the 5 tildes in my template it doesnt do the variable time I wanted. As it happens, I do something similar in my signature, although it needs a bit more setup than a standard signature. Once you've done it, you'll only need to sign with 3 ~ instead of the normal 4.
  1. To start, I'd move your signature from Template:Signatures/Borithel to User:Borithel/Signature and add an argument for the time to go in, e.g. {{{1|}}} [rest of your signature here].
  2. Next, create User:Borithel/Sig with {{User:Borithel/Signature|{{{1|}}}}}. This is used to prevent your signature template being expanded and the source code added to every page (it's a quirk of mediawiki).
  3. Finally, you need to modify the signature field in your preferences to use a time parser function by passing in {{subst:#time: H:i, M j, Y}} as an argument to your signature.
As an example, my two signature templates are User:Cqm/Sig and USer:Cqm/Signature with my signature preference being set to:

I searched for documentation on H:i, j M Y because I wanted to understand it (it listed what you have as "j" as "d", and didnt see a "j" anywhere so dont know what that is). Found documentation from a place related to php so I presume that's the type of code instead of CSS. I'm not Cqm, but I believe I can answer most of these for you until he's back around to field your questions.
  1. {{#time: format string }} is a MediaWiki parser function, with its documentation found here. The string #time: H:i, j M Y formats the time as, Hour in 24-hour format, zero-padded:Minutes past the hour, zero-padded, Day of the month, not zero-padded An abbreviation of the month name, in the site language 4-digit year; 17:42, 31 Jan 2023.
  2. {{{1|}}} is an anonymous transclusion numbered parameter; documentation on them can be found here. They are used to pass relevant information into templates. User:Cqm is suggesting that you pass the previously formatted time function through your newly created signature template using the numbered parameter, so the time you signed your post is saved on each edit, instead of the local time the signature is viewed.
  3. This is so when you sign, only {{User:Borithel/Signature|TIME}} is left behind, instead of all the raw formatting code required to display your templated signature that way.
  4. {{subst:Name}}when this template link is used, it will be replaced once and for all with the content of [[Template:Name]] as of the time the page with the link is saved: a copy of the contents of [[Template:Name]] will be substituted for the template link. The contents are then a part of the including page, and can be edited normally, separately from the original. Note: later changes to the source template page will not be propagated to the page with the template link.
  5. Perhaps play around with wrapping your signature with the {{RSFont}} template. It would cause it to look something like: Ironman badge.pngIronman BorithelQuick Chat icon.png

So it starts off with my User:Borithel/Sig. A substitution is used for the whole signature, I assume this is in case a dependent page is deleted. Then within User:Borithel/Sig it defines the {{{1|}}} parameter as time. The reason it's on another page is because when a template is linked within another template it expands the contents of the interior templates. If it wasnt on another page it would show the time in which the template page was saved originally, by letting it expand within the template it timestamps it as it's used. Within all this is an ifexist statement, it checks to see if the page is exists or not, if it does it proceeds normally; pasting the template, but if it doesn't exist it pastes a somewhat standard signature. Oh and the reason {{{1|}}} has a pipe in it is to set a default parameter to fall back on instead of displaying {{{1|}}}, it will display   if for some reason the parameter definition in my preferences is no longer defined.

Showing me the media wiki pages helped a bunch, and now that I know that exists I'll definitely check there for further research. Oh also, the MuseoSans font was a good call, thank you. I'll probablly not do this time stamp thing because it feels obnoxious, but I appreciate the knowledge. :)
