Protean items are a group of items available from Treasure Hunter (and related promotions) used to train skills without producing an output (with some exceptions).
All protean items are stackable, allowing easy training of the associated skills. They also work in conjunction with portable skilling stations, bonus experience, brawling gloves, and Double XP Weekends, making them popular to save for use during bonus experience events.
All protean items can be turned into any other protean item using a right-click 'Convert' option, at a 3:2 ratio.
Obtaining protean items[edit | edit source]
Treasure Hunter offers both protean items directly, as well as protean packs, which can be opened into any protean items.
|Mini protean pack||10|
|Small protean pack||75|
|Medium protean pack||150|
|Large protean pack||300|
Types of protean items[edit | edit source]
|Protean logs||Firemaking, Fletching, or both|
Planks[edit | edit source]
Protean planks are the most different to any other protean item, as they do produce items. The planks can function as any other plank when constructing items, so the ideal use is to make items that require solely mahogany planks; these planks give 140 experience each.
Bars[edit | edit source]
Protean bars are smithed on any anvil, via a unique Smithing action based on player's level in the skill: level 1-15 performs 'Protean bronze smithing' for 75 experience per bar, up to level 90+ performing 'Protean Elder rune smithing' for 530 base experience per bar. Each Make-X action uses up to 60 protean bars, at 4.8 seconds per bar.
Traps[edit | edit source]
Protean traps are laid like normal bird snares, box traps or marasamaw plants at a relevant Hunter area. The trap has an increased chance to catch creatures, lasts 50% longer before decaying, and when it does catch a creature it grants 25% more experience. If it fails to catch the creature, the trap is still consumed, but it still grants 50% of the normal catch experience. No drops are obtained from the traps.
Protean traps can be automatically deployed by default. This lays up to 60 traps (after which auto-deploy needs to be clicked again) and automatically checks them.
Hides[edit | edit source]
Protean hides can be crafted anywhere (thread not required) and give experience based on one's crafting level (unlike bars, it increases with every level, not just at specific intervals). Each Make-X action uses up to 60 protean hides, at 3 seconds per hide.
Logs[edit | edit source]
Protean logs can be fletched, burnt, or both, for experience.
- They can be burnt singularly (creating a fire), added to a bonfire or portable brazier for Firemaking experience alone - after 60 logs added a bonfire/brazier, you pause and must click again to continue.
- They can be fletched anywhere for Fletching experience alone (up to 60 actions per Make-X).
- They can be 'fletched and burnt' anywhere for both Fletching and Firemaking experience - half as much in each as would've been obtained from doing that skill alone (up to 60 actions per Make-X).
Memories[edit | edit source]
Protean memories can be released anywhere for Divination experience. The experience gained is based on the highest 'tier' of divine energy that you can harvest; boons increase this experience. Up to 60 can be released per Make-X action, at 4.8 seconds each.
Cogs[edit | edit source]
Protean cogs can be manufactured anywhere to train Invention; Each Make-X interface uses up to 60 protean cogs, at 4.2 seconds per cog. The experience given ranges from 108 experience for levels 1-20, up to 432 experience for levels 101-120.
Protean Powerup[edit | edit source]
Protean powerups are items used to increase the speed of protean items by 15%. Each lasts five minutes per activation, stacking up to two hours. They can be right-clicked to check the currently active powerups' duration. Protean powerups have no effect while making flatpacks or placing traps, making them completely redundant while training Construction or Hunter.
