A player drinking a potion

Potions are consumable items that have a variety of different effects and bonuses. Players are able to make most of them at various levels with the Herblore skill using herbs and other ingredients.

The potion-making process in Herblore takes two steps, each combining separate items. The first step involves adding a primary ingredient (usually a herb) to a vial of water (or a vial of coconut milk for some high-level potions), to produce an unfinished potion. This grants a 1 Herblore experience per unfinished potion. If you are trying to save money while doing herblore it is recommended to purchase vials and fill them with water yourself, as a vial is cheaper than a vial of water.

The second step involves adding a secondary ingredient (see below) to make a complete potion that may be drunk or sold (with the exception of a few potions made as part of a quest). This is the main method of gaining Herblore experience. Both steps can be done in batches, which is when the player's inventory contains several of the required items, one may "make all" or "make x".

A finished potion will ordinarily give you a dose less than the vial gives potential to. You can take the potions in noted form to a Decanter to increase or decrease the amount of doses per potion, provided you have enough vials if you decide to decrease the dose. Available decanters include Bob Barter at the Grand Exchange, Zahur in Nardah, Rhobert Dail in the centre of Prifddinas, War in War's Retreat, or Rhodri Dail in the Max Guild.

The choice of herb and secondary ingredient dictate which potion is made. Each potion has a minimum Herblore level required before it can be made, unless the assist system is used.

Combination potions[edit | edit source]

Main article: Combination potion

Combination potions provide effects of multiple regular high-level potions. They can be unlocked by purchasing recipes from Herblore shop in Meilyr district in Prifddinas. To make a combination potion, players need a 4-dose vial of each component potion, as well as a crystal flask in their inventory. Using one potion on another will create a 6-dose flask of the combination potion.

Update history[edit | edit source]

The update history project is a work-in-progress – not all updates to this topic may be covered below. See here for how to help out!
  • patch 3 August 2020 (Update):
    • Updated potion tooltips that reference adrenaline/special attack gain to specify percentage rather than a value, and to match the other adrenaline potions.
  • patch 2 December 2019 (Update):
    • Creating unfinished potions will no longer provide duplicate vials.
  • patch 12 November 2018 (Update):
    • Potion tooltips are here and yes, they also come with a toggle under Gameplay Settings > General > Game Interaction > then scroll all the way down to "Show extra potion information on tooltip", if you're not fussed about seeing all our hard work. :)
  • patch 9 April 2018 (Update):
    • Potions will now have a 'Drink' option rather than 'Eat' when right clicking them in your inventory whilst the bank is open.
  • hotfix 18 September 2017 (Update):
    • The potion drinking delay was restored.
  • patch 22 July 2014 (Update):
    • Untradeable potions no longer have a Herblore level requirement to drink.
  • patch 9 September 2008 (Update):
    • Bob Barter can now combine 3-dose, 2-dose and 1-dose potions from a player's inventory into vials containing 4 doses. This includes barbarian potions and calquat kegs.
