Phoenix feathers can be obtained from the forge phoenix or divine forge phoenix familiar or by plucking feathers from the desert phoenix. The desert phoenix is located along the north-western bank of the River Elid, in the gorge north of the bridge. The player may fail, in which case the phoenix stuns the player and does 16 - 300 life points of damage, depending on how many life points the player has left. When a feather is successfully plucked the player earns 26 Thieving experience.
A phoenix feather is used in The Golem quest, where it is used on black mushroom ink to turn it into a phoenix quill pen. It is also an ingredient used in combination with an antifire (3) potion to create a super antifire (3) potion at level 85 Herblore. This potion renders the user completely immune to dragonfire for 6 minutes. It is also a necessary material in the restoration of the Ceremonial plume (damaged) artefact, requiring 81 Archaeology.
Plucking feathers from the desert phoenix is the most reliable way to obtain large amounts of feathers. The Golem quest must be completed to be able to obtain additional phoenix feathers. Completion of the elite Desert achievements allows you to steal two feathers at once. Phoenix feathers can be stored in Beast of Burden familiars and can also be banked using the signs of the porter or noted using magic notepaper (although the feathers must be used on the notepaper, not vice versa). The Thieving cape perk works on phoenix feathers; and other Thieving boosts will increase your success rate while gathering feathers. The Sticky Fingers relic does not work on the desert phoenix. If you have low Thieving and/or Constitution levels you may need to bring food to heal damage dealt by unsuccessful Thieving attempts. Protection from the desert heat is also needed in the area where the desert phoenix is located unless you have completed the Crocodile Tears quest.
