Pay-to-play Runecrafting training
This guide describes the most effective methods to train the Runecrafting skill. The experience rate estimates in this guide do not incorporate the use of any experience boosting items or bonus experience. Runecrafting is an artisan skill which involves using runecrafting altars to create runes from rune and pure essence. Levelling up the Runecrafting skill allows players to create runes which award greater amounts of experience when they are crafted. Having a higher Runecrafting level also increases the player's chance of creating multiple runes from a single piece of essence, though this does not grant additional Runecrafting experience.
Useful equipment[edit | edit source]
Master runecrafter robes[edit | edit source]
Wearing components of the master runecrafter robes set gives a percentage increase in the amount of base experience that is gained while runecrafting. There are four pieces in the set: the hat, robe, skirt, and boots. Components of the master runecrafter robes can be purchased for 15,000 Runecrafting guild tokens, 4,000 Runespan points or 500 thaler per piece.

Ethereal outfits[edit | edit source]
Parts of ethereal outfits could be won as prizes from Treasure Hunter. They may also be created from rune ethereal fragments which are received when runecrafting with at least level 70 Runecrafting. The fragments can be assembled into outfit parts with level 80 Runecrafting and 20 Invention.
The death ethereal outfit, law ethereal outfit, and blood ethereal outfit consist of head slot, body slot, leg slot, hand slot and feet slot items. When wearing a complete version of any of these three outfits, players gain the following bonuses:
- Runes are not required or used up when using platforms to move between islands in Runespan (Runecrafting level requirements must still be met).
- Chance of receiving double runes while creating runes in Runespan is increased by 5%.
- When all pieces of the outfit are worn there is a 25% chance that Runecrafting pouches will not degrade upon being emptied.
- If a player owns a complete set of master runecrafter robes they will receive its 5% increased base experience effect while wearing an ethereal outfit.
Players who own all pieces of the death ethereal outfit, law ethereal outfit, and blood ethereal outfit can combine these outfits' components to form the infinity ethereal outfit. This outfit gives superior benefits to those given by the other ethereal outfits. Players gain the following bonuses from an infinity ethereal outfit:
- Runes are not required or used up when using platforms to move between islands in Runespan (Runecrafting level requirements must still be met).
- Chance of receiving double runes while creating runes in Runespan is increased by 7% (as opposed to 5% with the other ethereal outfits).
- When all pieces of the outfit are worn there is a 50% chance that Runecrafting pouches will not degrade upon being emptied (as opposed to 25% with the other ethereal outfits).
- If a player owns a complete set of master runecrafter robes then they will receive its 5% increased base experience effect while wearing an ethereal outfit.
- The infinity ethereal body can be used to store 12 essence.
- The infinity ethereal body can be used to teleport directly to the yellow wizard while in Runespan 5 times per day.
- The infinity ethereal head will act as a wicked hood, providing free runes and rune essence and teleports to Runecrafting altars daily.
- If the player owns components of the wicked robes outfit then they will receive their weight-reduction effect while wearing the equivalent piece of the infinity ethereal set.
An augmented weapon with the Wise perk can give up to 4% increased experience.
Catalyst fragment[edit | edit source]
The Runecrafter's Catalyst fragment halves the degrade rate of Runecrafting pouches. It can also be combined into the Combined Catalyst fragment to save space.
Torstol incense sticks[edit | edit source]
Each potency level of torstol incense sticks provides a 0.5% increase to base XP gain. The potency level will increase every 10 minutes and will reach its maximum at level 4 (+2% to base XP). Overloading consumes 6 sticks but instantly provides the maximum potency.
Explorer's Ring 2/3/4[edit | edit source]
The Explorer's Ring 2 and its superior variants increases the number of elemental runes (Air/Water/Earth/Fire runes) you can craft at a time when equipped, granting additional experience.
Wilderness Sword 3/4[edit | edit source]
The Wilderness sword 3 and 4 provide a chance for the Mage of Zamorak to teleport players to the centre of the Abyss when equipped. The Nexus Mod relic power is a superior version of this effect, as it guarantees arrival in the centre.
Focused siphoning auras[edit | edit source]
Focused siphoning auras increase a player's chance of siphoning successfully from nodes and creatures within Runespan by 3-15% while activated. These auras' effects last for one hour after they are activated. Players may use 5 or 10 vis wax to extend a Focused siphoning aura's activation time by 50% or 100% (costing 101,925 or 203,850). This effect must be applied before the aura is activated. Once a focused siphoning aura has been used the player must wait 3 hours before using it again. Focused siphoning auras can be bought using Membership loyalty points. All lower tiers of the aura must be owned before a higher tier aura can be purchased.

Urns[edit | edit source]
Runecrafting urns can be used to gain additional Runecrafting experience while training. When held in the inventory, urns are filled as the player runecrafts. Only base experience counts towards filling the urn. Crafting combination runes does not fill urns. Full urns can be teleported away to receive additional experience. Only one urn is filled at a time, though players may own up to a total of 10 full urns. If a player owns 10 full runecrafting urns they must teleport at least 1 away before they can fill more urns. Urns are only tradeable in their (nr), non-runed, forms. In order to use a runecrafting urn the player must add a pure essence to it; this makes the urn untradeable.

Players who have at least level 24 Invention and who have completed Nomad's Elegy can discover how to make an urn enhancer. When in the player’s inventory the urn enhancer grants 25% additional experience for teleporting a full urn. This effect costs 20 charges from the player’s charge pack. Assuming the player purchases divine charges from the Grand Exchange, it would cost 550.39 to use the urn enhancer when teleporting an urn.
Relic powers[edit | edit source]
Relic powers can be obtained through the Archaeology skill to unlock permanent passive buffs to assist in training Runecrafting among other things. Only 3 relic powers with a combined energy cost of 650 or less can be active at one time.

---|---|---|---|
1-90 | Runecrafting through the Abyss | 24,750-206,250 (34,650-288,750 using demonic skull) | Players can train at Runespan to gain between 16,500 experience an hour, with level 1 Runecrafting, and 93,000 experience an hour, with level 99 Runecrafting. |
90-99 | Runecrafting at the Soul Altar | 226,800 (317,520 using demonic skull) |
Runecrafting through the Abyss[edit | edit source]
Players can train Runecrafting by using the Abyss to travel to runecrafting altars to create runes. When a runecrafting altar is accessed through the abyss the player receives 2.5 times as much experience from crafting runes at the altar.
Entering the Abyss drains the player's prayer points.
Steps[edit | edit source]
- Teleport to Edgeville using a
Wilderness sword 1
- Fill your runecrafting pouches and inventory with
Pure essence.
- Run north towards the Wilderness wall (the Surge ability can be used to cut down running time).
- Enter the Wilderness and walk north to the Mage of Zamorak (see map on the right)
- Right-click the Mage of Zamorak and Teleport.
- Use the nearest shortcut to move into the inner ring of the Abyss. ("squeeze through gap", "mine rocks", "distract eyes", etc)
- Run to the rift of your desired rune (check the map for the optimal rune to craft).
- Use altar to craft runes.
- Repeat from step 1.
Quest requirements[edit | edit source]
- Players are required to complete the Enter the Abyss miniquest before they can use the Abyss, which will level them to level 9 Runecrafting.
- Players additionally need to complete quests to gain access to higher tier runecrafting altars:
- To create Cosmic runes at 27
, the quest Lost City is required
- To create Death runes at 65
, the quest Mourning's End Part II is required
- To create Blood runes at 77
, the quest Legacy of Seergaze is required
- To create Soul runes at 90
, the quest 'Phite Club is required
- To create Cosmic runes at 27

- Bank preset:
- It is recommended that players create a bank preset with the items shown on the right. (Demonic skull is optional and it will opt in to PvP)
- A preset containing filled Runecrafting pouches cannot be used to refill pouches: players must fill pouches manually, though this can be done while the bank interface is open by using a right-click option on a pouch.
- The preset should have the hotkey 3 assigned (see the action bar below)
- Secondary action bar:
- It is recommended that players create a secondary action bar with the teleports and pouches added into it (simply drag these items on it)
- This allows players to assign hotkeys to these abilities, speeding up their usage greatly

Item requirements[edit | edit source]
Wilderness sword 1
- The Wilderness sword is the fastest free teleport to get to Edgeville, close to the edge of the wilderness.
- It is awarded for completion of the easy set of Wilderness Tasks, which has no skill or quest requirements to obtain.
- Furthermore, if the player has acquired the Wilderness Sword 3, which is a reward for completing the hard set of Wildnerness achievements, the Mage of Zamorak sometimes teleports the Player in the inner circle of the Abyss, 20% of the time. However, the sword has to be equipped for this effect to take place.
- However, access to the Abyss Law Rift is prohibited while the Wilderness sword is in your inventory or equipped, being that the Law Altar is located in Entrana.
Demonic skull
- To gain the most experience possible players are recommended to purchase a demonic skull from the Mage of Zamorak for 550,000.
- 3.5 times the normal amount of experience is gained from creating runes if the player has a demonic skull equipped in addition to accessing the runecrafting altar via the Abyss.
- An icon (
) is displayed above the player's head to signify that they are carrying a demonic skull.
- While carrying the skull the player may be attacked by any other player, regardless of combat level, with 500,000 being dropped in place of the skull upon death.
- The runecrafting altar portals inside the Abyss teleport the player inside the "Mysterious Ruins" of each altar, and therefore remove the need for the player to be holding an entry mechanism such as a talisman or a wicked hood - this can be used to avoid the loss of potentially valuable items when wielding a demonic skull.
Pouches[edit | edit source]
Runecrafting pouches can be used to store essence. Essence stored in pouches is automatically used to create runes upon clicking a runecrafting altar. Runecrafting pouches, with the exception of the small pouch, degrade after a certain number of uses. Once a pouch is degraded it will not be able to store as much essence.
If a player continues to use a degraded pouch then it will be destroyed. Pouch Protector is the best way to ensure your pouches don't degrade. Players can repair pouches for free by speaking to the Dark Mage, who is found at the centre of the Abyss. Other methods are using Repair Rune Pouch spell, runecrafter's catalyst fragment and the combined catalyst fragment.

Recommended boosts[edit | edit source]
Nexus Mod relic power is highly recommended, as this causes the Mage of Zamorak to teleport you to the centre of the abyss 100% of the time, speeding up this method greatly.
Requires level 80 | |
Pouch Protector relic power will disable pouch degradation entirely while active.
Requires level 50 | |
Powerburst of sorcery potions significantly increases the runes produced and the profit per hour of the method, at the cost of a small amount of XP. | |
Infinity ethereal body can be used to store additional essence. | |
Morytania legs 2 or better can be worn to gain a 10% chance of crafting a second blood rune, which grants twice as much experience, per essence that the player crafts into a rune. If the player is able to use Morytania legs 2 or better then they can also gain this benefit while wearing any ethereal outfit. | |
Hero's Welcome quest allows the player to create 5% more runes, though this does not give additional Runecrafting experience. | |
On the Anachronia Dinosaur Farm; the farm totem tier 1 effects of the arcane apoterrasaur provides an increase of your 'runes per essence' multiplier by 1 while crafting elemental runes. The totem tier 2 effect provides a multiplier of 2. |
Familiars[edit | edit source]
Summoning familiars can also be used store additional essence. There are 3 of these abyssal familiars available. Summoning familiars cannot be used while crafting law runes as beasts of burden are not allowed onto Entrana.

Runecrafting at the Soul Altar[edit | edit source]
At level 90 Runecrafting players can train at the soul altar. It is a very AFK method and players gain large amounts of XP. The mechanics of using the soul altar differ from the standard process of runecrafting using the Abyss and demonic skull. Before use, the altar must first be 'charged' with pure essence by using up to 100 pure essence on the altar charger. Players can then craft 240 soul runes or more at once, and gain up to 77,000 experience from doing so. 1 charge is created from each 4 pure essence used in the charger; and the altar may hold up to 100 charges at once.
The abyss and demonic skull experience bonus is only needed when actually crafting the runes, meaning that the player can travel to the soul altar by any means for the runs that they are not crafting runes.
It should be noted that runecrafting soul runes using the nearby fairy ring to bank and not the abyss will produce about 83000 experience and 620000 gold per hour after subtracting the costs of pure essence, runes for NPC contact to repair pouches, summoning familiars, and using decorated runecrafting urns. Assuming the massive pouch is being used, this method will also use about 280 charges or 369 runespan points per hour and produce about 240 soul runes.
Steps[edit | edit source]
- Visit the soul altar multiple times at fairy ring CKQ and charge the altar using a total of 400
Pure essence
- Teleport to Edgeville using the
Wilderness sword 1 (optionally carry a
Demonic skull)
- Teleport to the Abyss using the Mage of Zamorak
- Head to the inner ring of the Abyss and enter the Soul Altar
- Craft 240 soul runes at the soul altar at once (each rune uses 1.25 charges)
Quest requirements[edit | edit source]
To use the soul altar, players require:
- Completion of the 'Phite Club quest
- Tier 9 Menaphos reputation
Item requirements[edit | edit source]
You need any method to teleport repeatedly to fairy rings:
- Wicked hood teleports and wicked hood teleport tokens
- Portable fairy ring created at 94
Invention
- Grace of the elves
- Max Guild skill portal tuned to the Zanaris Fairy Ring
- Cape of legends to teleport to a nearby Fairy Ring
Boosts[edit | edit source]
Players attempting to maximize experience gains can use the benefits of the 250% experience increase from the abyss altar portal on 108 soul altar charges by quickly crafting runes on a fully charged altar after teleporting, then charging the altar for the additional 8 charges and crafting those as well before the benefits expire.
Runespan[edit | edit source]
Players wishing for a less intensive training method may train at Runespan. Runespan is a dimension composed of islands that are inhabited by nodes, creatures and floating essence. Runespan is split over 3 levels; the upper level, middle level and lower level. While at Runespan, players can siphon from creatures and nodes to receive runes and Runecrafting experience, until the creature or node is broken down. Creatures will always respawn on the same island that they were broken down on, while nodes spawn more randomly. Rune essence is required in order to siphon from creatures and nodes. Players can gain 50 essence upon successfully breaking down a creature and up to 25 essence from floating essence, if they currently have less than 25 essence. The runes and rune essence used within Runespan are untradeable and cannot be taken out of the area. Runes can be used to use platforms to move between the dimension's islands. Upon leaving Runespan runes are converted into Runespan points, which can be used to purchase rewards. While in Runespan players can exchange Runespan points with Wizard Finix to receive 10 of each type of rune that they are able to create.
To effectively train within Runespan, players should prioritise siphoning from nodes that give the best experience rates, using platforms to travel to islands where these nodes are present and obtaining more rune essence from floating essence when necessary. These nodes tend to spawn more frequently on the upper levels of Runespan, so players should train at the highest level that they are able to access. Use the tables below, which show a theoretical experience per hour that could be achieved if a player with 99 Runecrafting were able to constantly siphon from a particular type of node, to identify the nodes which give the best experience rates.
Levels 1-33: Low-level Runespan[edit | edit source]
At level 1 Runecrafting players can enter the lower level of Runespan using the low-level Runespan portal located within the Wizards' Tower. With levels 1-9 Runecrafting players can gain experience rates equivalent to around 16,500 experience an hour siphoning from nodes on island 1 (see map). Players can gain between 26,000 experience an hour, with level 9 Runecrafting, and 28,500 experience an hour with level 33 Runecrafting siphoning from nodes on island 16.

Levels 33-66: Mid-level Runespan[edit | edit source]
At level 33 Runecrafting players can enter the middle level of Runespan. At level 50 Runecrafting players can use the mid-level Runespan portal to access the level from the Wizards' Tower. Players who are not able to use the portal must ascend to the middle level of Runespan by climbing the vine ladder located in the lower level. With levels 33-50 Runecrafting players can gain around 36,500 experience an hour from siphoning nodes on islands 5 and 6 (see map). Between 35,500 and 59,000 experience an hour can be gained with levels 50 to 66 Runecrafting, using islands 16, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22 and 23 to hunt for the best available nodes.

Levels 66-99+: High-level Runespan[edit | edit source]
Players with level 66 Runecrafting can access the upper level of Runespan. With 1,000 Runespan points it is possible to purchase a one time upgrade to change the mid-level Runespan portal into a portal to high level Runespan by speaking to Wizard Rinsit. If the player has at least one level 99 skill or has completed all quests then they may instead build a high-level Runespan portal in the garden of the Max Guild in Prifddinas to teleport to the upper level of Runespan. With neither of these portals available, players have to enter the upper level by climbing up the bone ladder found on the middle floor.
With level 66 Runecrafting, players can gain around 63,000 XP/hour using islands 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 (see map) to hunt for the best available nodes. Islands 20, 21, and 22 (need 77 Runecrafting) have a denser distribution of desirable nodes, but there are no esslings on these islands for fast essence (only esshounds and esswraiths) and, if below level 77 Runecrafting, need to reach them thorough right side of islands 1, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5.
From 90 Runecrafting, players can obtain around 93,000 XP/hour using platforms 32, 30, 29, 27 and 25 to look for the best available nodes – these islands have less of the lower nodes common to mid-level Runespan, in favour of the high-level exclusive normal/bloody skulls, blood pools, and living/undead souls. More approximate rates once undead souls (95 Runecrafting) are available without boosting are below, with gear listed.
Players can gain 100,000-150,000 XP/hour (double this if using bonus XP) using the aforementioned islands (32-25) and/or visiting yellow wizards whenever the opportunity arises:
- Ethereal outfit (law, death, blood or infinity) and a full master runecrafter set
- Decorated runecrafting urns with urn enhancer
- At least one augmented equipment piece with the Wise perk
- Torstol incense sticks
- Master focused siphoning aura (for one hour every three hours)
- Extreme runecrafting flasks

Creating Rune Pouches[edit | edit source]
This method is expensive but fast. Players should stock up on Magical threads (and potentially Croesus flakes) before hand due to the buy limit, should they wish to train with this method as it only has a purchase limit of 1,000.

Runespan Distractions and Diversions[edit | edit source]
Runespan has 2 Distractions and Diversions that can be participated in to gain additional Runecrafting experience.
Wizards can be found throughout Runespan. Players can gain Runecrafting experience as a reward from finding the wizard wearing yellow robes. It is possible to teleport directly to a yellow wizard using a yellow wizard teleport tablet, which may be purchased for 1,000 Runespan points, or an infinity ethereal body. Alternatively, speak to any of the wizards wearing blue robes or Wizard Finix to be told what direction the yellow wizard is currently located and to display an arrow which will indicate the yellow wizard's location. After locating the yellow wizard players can use a maximum of 10 runes on him to receive an experience reward. With at least level 77 Runecrafting players should give the wizard the type of rune that he request that the player gives to him. Players with level 76 or less Runecrafting should give the yellow wizard the highest level rune that they are able to craft. Players can be awarded up to 7,524 experience, with level 99 Runecrafting. This Distraction and Diversion can be completed every 10 minutes and first occurs 10 minutes after the player enters Runespan. A message in the player's chatbox will notify them when they become able to give the yellow wizard runes again, unless the player chooses not to help the wizard. The location of the yellow wizard is unique to each player and all of the wizards teleport to different locations every 4 minutes 31.5 seconds.
The runesphere is a Distraction and Diversion that occurs within the Runespan approximately every 2.5 hours, it involves a runesphere spawning on 1 of the dimension's 3 levels. A message in the player's chatbox will notify them of which level the runesphere has spawned on. An icon () is also displayed in Runespan interface when a runesphere is present; this tells the player on which floor the runesphere is present when hovered over. Runesphere teleport tablets may be used to teleport directly to an active runesphere: these can be bought for 2,000 Runespan points each. If the player does not have these teleports then they may speak to any wizard to get a hint about the direction in which the runesphere is located, though they must be on the same level as the runesphere. A runesphere is made up of layers of runic energy; each layer corresponds to a different type of rune that can be created within Runespan and has a particular level requirement to siphon. Players can siphon from the runesphere to receive Runecrafting experience and the runes of the type corresponding to the current layer of the runesphere. The runesphere's layers are destroyed over time, regardless of whether players are siphoning from the runesphere or not. Each layer of the runesphere takes between 2 and 3.5 minutes to break down. It takes around an hour to fully break down a runesphere. As the runesphere is broken down subsequent layers that require a lower Runecrafting level, but which award lower amounts of experience when siphoned from, are uncovered. The highest possible Runecrafting level that can be required to siphon from a runesphere is 92, in order to siphon from the initial soul. While siphoning from a runesphere players will also receive rune dust, up to a maximum of 1,000 rune dust per day. Rune dust can be exchanged for Runecrafting experience once per day by using it on the pure energy that appears after a runesphere has been completely broken down. This can give up to 25,000 experience, if exchanging 1,000 dust.
