Palm tree

This article is about the player-grown plant that yields coconuts. For the plant that yields palm leaves, see leafy palm tree.

The palm tree (also known as the coconut tree) can be grown with the Farming skill. Level 68 farmers may plant a palm tree seed in a plant pot that has been filled with dirt from any empty gardening patch; a gardening trowel is needed to plant the seed. It must then be watered. These actions are all performed in the inventory.

The planted seed will become a palm sapling in less than five minutes and can then be transferred to a fruit tree patch. The fruit tree patch must be raked clean of weeds if it has not been used. Compost, Supercompost, ultracompost, or the Fertile Soil lunar spell may be used prior to planting. Once planted (using a spade), the nearby farmer may be paid to watch over the tree. Payment is 15 papaya fruits, which may be noted to save inventory space.

An amulet of nature may be bound to the patch to provide progress on its growth. Once mature, the tree produces up to six coconuts at a time.

Planting the palm seedling gives 110.5 Farming experience. A healthy palm tree, when checked, provides 10,150 Farming experience. If the farmer watches the tree, then disease on the tree may be removed using secateurs. However, if neglected, the diseased tree will die.

Each coconut, when picked, gives 41.5 Farming experience. Once all 6 coconuts have been picked, the tree will slowly produce more coconuts until all 6 are available again. However, the coconuts may be picked any time they show on the tree. It takes approximately 40 minutes for each fruit to respawn. The timing matches that of the 40-minute growth interval.

The coconuts are used in the Herblore skill to make extra strong potions, and given as payment to gardeners to look after planted magic trees.

Production costs[edit | edit source]

The data in this table is based on the Grand Exchange prices of a palm tree seed, an empty vial, coconut milk and the residual coconut shell, assuming one seed is processed to 6 vials of coconut milk and 6 coconut shells and a gardener is paid with 15 papaya fruits to keep the patch disease free. Farming all 7 fruit tree patches will provide you with 73,567.2 experience, costing 346,073. Costs can be reduced by saving the shells for use in the creation of Supercompost and by waiting to harvest additional coconuts after the first batch.
