Onion detail.png

An onion is a food item that heals 200 life points when consumed raw. When a player eats an onion, the message "It's always sad to see a grown man/woman cry" appears in the player's chat box.

An onion's main uses are in Farming and Cooking. Players can also take two onions and five coins to Aggie in Draynor Village to make yellow dye. If one looks closely as she does this, they can see something of a giant magical onion above her cauldron, that will turn into a bottle of yellow dye.

Obtaining onions[edit | edit source]

Onions grow in the back garden of Fred the Farmer's farmhouse east of the sheep pen in Lumbridge, in the field north of Rimmington, immediately south of the Draynor bank, and east of the southern entrance of Rellekka.

After completing the Fremennik Trials quest, members can buy onions from the greengrocers on Miscellania and Etceteria. Alternatively, they can steal them from the vegetable stalls there if they have at least level 2 Thieving.

Members can grow their own onions using the Farming skill (see below).

Members can gain onions for free from a teak larder or better in the kitchen of a player-owned house, though they will need at least level 43 Construction to build it if they want it in their own house.

Farming[edit | edit source]

Players can grow onion plants at level 5 Farming to gain 9.5 experience points for planting them and 10.5 experience points for harvesting them. They are grown by planting 3 onion seeds in an allotment patch, and take approximately 40 minutes to grow.

Gardeners will look after the onion plants in exchange for a payment of a sack filled with 10 potatoes. Growing marigolds in an adjacent flower patch will also protect the onion plants from disease.

Members can store up to 10 onions in a sack, resulting in a sack of onions. They can then use the sack of onions to pay a gardener to watch over growing cabbages or asgarnian hops.

Alternatively, players can use onions in a Compost Bin to make compost.

Cooking[edit | edit source]

Although players can eat onions by themselves, their main use is as an ingredient in Cooking. They are used in making ugthanki kebabs, garden pies, and mushroom potatoes (as well as fried onions and mushroom & onion, used in making the topping).

They are also used in gnome cooking to make vegetable battas, worm holes, and vegetable balls.
