Old Gnomish

Old Gnomish was the language spoken by the gnome race before they adopted the common tongue as a standard language. Only a small proportion of the language is known as it has been translated by Anita the gnome, Glough's girlfriend. Gnomish is no longer a widely spoken language and gnomes have mostly forgotten it,[source needed] though Gnome Air and the Gnome Glider service write their locations in Gnomish. Players can learn a small portion of the language by reading the translation book given by Anita.

andralo (3) possibly from andra (city)

dyl (3) likely meaning elf or elven.

gan (2)

gnomo (3): possibly meaning gnome

hamo (1)

Translations of Gnome texts[edit | edit source]

From the Gnome Glider menu:

English Name Gnome Name Translation
The Grand Tree Ta Quir Priw The Guardian Tree
White Wolf Mountain Sindarpos Big rocks
Varrock Lemanto Andra Man City
Al Kharid Kar-Hewo No Grass
Karamja Gandius Jungle
Feldip Hills Lemantolly Undri Stupid Man Lands
Tree Gnome Village Priw Gnomo Andralo Tree Gnomo Andralo
Prifddinas Dylandra Dyl City
Tuai Leit Kai-Undri Boat Lands

This implies that the word for "stupid man" can also mean "ogre" as the majority of Ogres live in the Feldip Hills area.

The fabled Gnomish city of Arposandra translates as "Rocks city".

Page 13 of my notes has a Gnomish entry that has only partially been translated.

Gnome Stronghold agility course signpost[edit | edit source]

The sign on the signpost.

The Gnome Stronghold agility course has a signpost with: 3 food images with Batta Bom Krachis then, Gal prit equa! Aluft doogle sen smai!

  • Refers to Gnome cooking - Batta (Battas), Bom (Gnomebowls), and Krachis (Crunchies)
  • Equa refers to Equa leaves
  • Using the Translation book, Gal prit equa! translates to "All with Equa!" as all Gnome cooking includes Equa leaves as an ingredient.
  • Aluft doogle sen smai! remains untranslated.
    • Aluft may refer to Aluft Gianne Sr or Aluft Gianne Jr
    • Doogle might refer to Doogle leaves since Aluft Gianne Jr uses doogle leaves for maps, however it is not included in any Gnome cooking recipes.
    • doogle or sen may be a verb
    • smai may be an adjective of Aluft or Aluft doogle

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • To learn the language the player must get the Translation book from King Narnode Shareen, which is a limited guide.
  • The only person in Gielinor capable of speaking the language fluently was Hazelmere, an elderly gnome. Though it was implied that he could speak common Gielinorian, he usually chose not to. His death at the hands of Lucien means that there are no fluent Old Gnomish speakers remaining.
  • In the quest The Grand Tree, the player must translate a letter from Old Gnomish.
