Sacred oil is used to make pyre logs, used to cremate vyre corpses for rewards. Players are often unwilling to create it, as the process is often seen as being slower and more complicated than it needs to be.

Sacred oil is made by using olive oil on the pyre at the Flamtaer temple in Mort'ton. The temple needs to be repaired, and nearby shades need to be kept in check. Both of these actions generate sanctity, which is then spent to create the sacred oil. Each 4-dose vial of olive oil requires 3.6 sanctity to sanctify, and no oil can be sanctified unless you have at least 10 sanctity.

On world 88, the official world for this activity, there will usually be players maintaining the temple. If this is the case, you can focus almost entirely on killing the nearby loar shades as quickly as possible.

Using a halberd with multi-target abilities such as cleave, hurricane and quake you can kill shades very quickly. However, using ranged or magic lets you target the shades from further away, which is useful if you have to compete with other players for kills.

Each shade has 4000 life points, and grants 2 sanctity when killed. With 100 sanctity you will be able to sanctify 26 vials of olive oil, after which you will have roughly 6 sanctity left. Thus you will have to gather sanctity twice (or even thrice if using a pack yak or pack mammoth) per trip.

If you're able to bank quickly, or if you're unable to focus on combat while quickly moving items between your inventory and your best of burden, you may find it better to bring a combat familiar and sanctifying only 26 or 28 vials per trip. The more time you spend banking, the less viable this option becomes.

Once you have turned an entire inventory's worth of olive oil into sacred oil, you should head to a bank. If you have completed Desert Treasure and have unlocked the shortcut between Canifis and Mort'ton by playing Temple Trekking, using a bank teleport to get to a bank, then returning using Kharyrll Teleport is by far the fastest way to bank. If this is not an option, the bank in Burgh de Rott is the best option. This can be sped up using Drakan's medallion after The Branches of Darkmeyer.

If neither of those options for banking are available, the banking process will likely be slow enough that a different money making method should be used instead.

You may want to help repair the temple while waiting for shades to respawn, especially if there are other players killing them as well. The temple is repaired using resources. Interacting with a temple wall while having a timber beam, a limestone brick and five swamp paste in your inventory will grant you one resource. Unlike sanctity, you don't lose resources over time, so you should prepare them in advance if you think you might want to use any. Timber beams and swamp paste stack, and all the items needed for resources are sold by Razmire Keelgan in Mort'ton.

You may save some money by buying olive oil from Razmire Keelgan instead of the Grand Exchange - Razmire Keeligan stocks 500 3-dose vials at 26 coins each, which are upgraded to 4-dose vials (at the same price) if you've completed the medium Morytania tasks. For comparison, the current Grand Exchange prices of 3- and 4-dose vials are 500 coins and 801 coins respectively.

The loar shades also have a chance of dropping useful items such as the deployable herb burner, the ectoplasmator, pieces of the ghost hunter outfit, and the cremation ability.
